what is the ideal retro? a game that combines challenge, replayability, game feel, and innovation, ideally with some comfy aesthetic and a memorable story/lore/universe

idea retro for me would be absolutely no story whatsoever. Or at least have cutscenes like Batman/Ninja Gaiden that can be easily skipped with the start button.

There's no ideal retro for me. And that's a good thing.

I've got arcade games, action adventure, RPGs. The lne thing I will say they have in common is the length. I'm hard pressed to find a game that lasts over 40 hours, and I'm fine with that.

I'd say it's Doom.
>easily playable on modern systems
>massive community making new content every day
>iconic enemy, weapon, texture, and level designs
>everyone knows the "lore"
>everyone agrees that the "retro" entries are superior to anything after
>simple game design that allows for near infinite application
It really is the perfect retro game in my eyes.

Not stupid, which actually proves the point. What is shit to play differs for everyone because we're looking for different things in our games.
For example, OP wants challenge and replayability. I don't care, I'm not poor and there are thousands of games out there, I don't want to replay the same game over and over just like I don't want to keep watching the same movie or eat the same food every day.

Faggot.

Probably Mega Man 2. Memorable, fun, difficult, with a simple but interesting story, and yet easily cheesed and full of janky, awful design decisions which is as retro as it gets.

>game feel
Is it so hard to categorize "controls" and "level design" as their own fields so you can actually break down how they work together, instead of lumping them into some nonsense that's only either "good" or "bad?" It's the same shit with "gameplay." Yeah, it's accepted, but it never conveys any real information. Just "I like" or "I don't like" in a format that's supposed to elaborate on that.

>> No.6157080

>>6157076
game feel doesn't have anything to do with level design, it's more about controls, responsiveness, feedback...etc

Things that are so simply pick up an play, majority of people instantly get it and can have fun with it.
That, and/or things that still look impressive and/or offer something that hasn't been matched or even forwarded in recent years.
Something like one of the first three (and a half) Metal Slug games. Still look and sound impressive, with sprite art that has arguably yet to be surpassed in some ways, and are really easy and fun to pick up and play, in a genre that has all but been dead for over a decade so you have to go back to get your fix in any meaningful way.

Anything mechanically challenge with fast enjoyable gameplay that rewards practice and replay, that isn't bloated with stops and pauses such as: shops, dialogue, scrolling menus, backtracking, mindless farming of items, cut-scenes, etc

true, some retro FPS and strategy games could fit as well. As long as they are centered around skill-based mechanics with difficult gameplay, without any rpg elements slowing them down.
