Learn arcade bmups to 1cc standard and you'll never be able to go back to shites of rage and will see all its abysmal flaws, the only thing good about it is the music. It's clunky, overlong, eats inputs on higher modes, has absolutely no balancing so they just chucked lives at you like candy to get around it on higher difficulties, it teaches you bad habits and starves you of needing to learning proper skills that you need in arcade bmups, it's good for console standard and nothing more, can't hold a candle to the top 15 arcade bmups.

You'd be surprised how few truly great ones there are, even just speaking mechanically. It's like with shmups, you mess up some small details and suddenly the whole combat feels off. Things like giving enemies invincibility from throws, or inconsistent hitstun, or weird move priority can make games very unpleasant to play. Konami suffers from it a lot, a lot of their later games are pretty much just copying Final Fight but they do it poorly. And if you're like me and want aggressive punishing enemy AI and a tight moveset you're really going to have a hard time finding games, nothing matches Final Fight in that respect.

That's not true, the flaws you mention are very much real but it does have a lot going for it. Max is great fun to play, he's fast paced, has a very well balanced multi purpose moveset with a good variety of throws, and very satisfying to play once you get the rhythm down and start fucking up crowds with throws. I love the intense enemy AI too even though a lot of the encounters aren't even remotely balanced for it. The length does make it drag a lot though.

Max sucks, actually, the true contender from Streets of Rage is Abadede. He could probably handle Andore or Abigail in the ring and would probably be able to pin Haggar after six lariats. He's lose to Zangief, though.

Beat em ups aren't hack and slash games where you can just go berserker mode all the time 90% is crowd control, learning to move and lead enemies around.

Also plane shifting, enemies are usually on a plane, if you move a little above them they can't atttack you, but usually you can attack them. Learn hitboxes, learn when you have iframes. Learn how to chain punch or chain some sort of combos.

Never seen so many people desperately defend Final Fight. Streets of Rage is a better beat-em-up franchise, period. Especially if it's Genesis vs Snes. SOR 1 is faster, tighter, has more enemies on Screen and is actually 2 player. SOR 2 is simply excellent all round. SOR 3 (play the Bare Knuckle 3 English translation for the best experience) has one of the best fighting variety and controls of any beat-em-up I've ever played. 3's music in stereo sound on a good TV/system is actually pretty amazing and creative. Though 2's music will always be my favourite. Any of the SOR games could have been in the Arcade as far as I'm concerned. Sodomized? Final Fight's a pretty tough game to 1cc, but post-Sodom stages don't get much harder, they stay roughly around the same level of difficulty with some occasional spikes. That is with the massive exception of the final stage, that one is long, tough and doesn't have many health pick ups, you pretty much have to go into it with at least 1 extra life unless you've mastered the game or got exceptionally lucky.

Just fight him normally. Stand on the left or right side and be patient, if you see him coming towards you, do a jump attack (backwards jump attack is very effective), wait until he jumps on the railing and tries to jump attack you from there since you can just sidestep it and combo him. Once he enters his last phase the key is just being patient and not getting greedy, the grenades are easy to avoid or superjoy through. There's usually a sweet spot where you're far enough that he starts standing and lobbing his grenades at you but where you can still reach him, that's the best opportunity to do a lot of damage when he's in that final phase.

The Japanese version of SOR 3 is a much better game all round. The Western release was filled with idiotic changes, from changing the colours of the main characters’ outfits for no reason, completely messing around with the entire narrative of the game, removing awesome looking cutscenes and making other pointless changes that make the version we got, almost an entirely new and much inferior release.

Bradford is annoying, I don't have any foolproof strategies against him, mostly you just have to learn his attacks/AI and get good at parrying/power attacking. If he's running at you or walking up to you, you can often just interrupt and combo him. If he does his jump, you have to quickly parry but also be ready to turn around and start comboing him because sometimes he will jump over you and your parry and try to attack from behind. A good way to deal some initial damage is doing the A+B superjoy attack, then coming close to him while your iframes are still active and following it up with a power attack. He does his spinning slash thing but the amount of iframes you have should be enough to do it safely. I found the horse useful when I played on normal dip settings since he's more passive, but I think the best approach is to just use it as a fallback in case things get hairy since jumping on it gives you iframes, and you can use it as a quick "screen clearer" if you press A+B, if you get lucky it'll do several hits to Bradford. Also, losing a life at him is acceptable if you're doing the 1-UP trick.

Clumsy ending but you can see the things I talked about. Don't hesitate to use your superjoy, it's extremely strong in this game. Also 2/3 through the fight a guy is likely to drop some extra health, the item he drops is completely random as far as I know but it's helpful anyway.

For Braford I have a nice strat with Arthur. But it's hard to explain without a video.
Walk up to him when he's on his horse, power strike him off, then get one more powerstrike as he's on the ground and a bit off-screen. Then immediately jump on the horse and wait. He'll hop over you, as he hops over you do your SUPER MOVE/SUPERJOY, this will send the horse charging and hit him. Then follow him, jump after Braford as he's dazed on the ground, and spam your power strike, and follow him, and spam it until he gets pushed off screen and keep spamming it. He will die.
The trick is to align yourself properly on his plane, and stick on that one plane the entire time, get the two power strikes off to set it up, dont move up or down from that initial plane.

I agree that a lot of 2D games are super gorgeous with detailed sprites and good animations, but I do find low poly 3D to have a certain level of charm as well.
I think the Saturn version of Die Hard Arcade/Dynamite Cop looks great for what it is.

Reminder that Schaefer does not suck. He's fucking awesome. Watch that video. Learn from it. Use the new techs, especially the ones involving the reverse uppercut. I'm not kidding when I say that Schaefer is powerful enough to trivialize 95% of the game. The only part of the game that still poses a challenge for me now is the last boss, but even she is not that big of a deal if you know some last boss tricks. I'm not even a 'great' player, just above average. The dash punch buffered into the reverse uppercut is his secret weapon. Use it all the time, constantly. It also takes care of Schaefer's only weakness: stalkers. Hit them with the tip of your dash punch from a safe distance then reverse uppercut away to safety and pepper with bullets, and repeat. Works for smashers as well. You can also do C&D-style megacrash invinc tricks with Schaefer. An understanding of his grab mechanics and knowledge of which enemies are safe to grab helps too: don't grab stalkers without invinc, grab warriors and smashers all you want, don't grab defenders w/out making them block first, don't grab late-level arachnoids without invinc, grab with your HANDS not your body. Schaefer is better than Linn. The only thing she can do that he can't is the pipe trick on bosses 1 and 2. Big whoop. Is he as good as the Predators though? Nope.

>> No.6163568

>>6163557
After the reverse uppercut, don't go overheating your gun. Never do that. Because the gun part is about 40% of what makes the reverse uppercut so good: it does crowd control, clears the ground below you, and stuns enemies so that you can get them with another dash punch buffered into another reverse uppercut. Tap the gun and you'll never overheat. Once you get good at aiming you can crowd control your way out of almost any situation without taking a scratch. For example, arachnoids will do a high jump attack at you but you can hit them by aiming diagonally up. Don't underestimate the gun part of the uppercut. It's a big part of what makes the dash punch into reverse uppercut so good. That's why you never want to overheat, because you want to use the dash punch --> reverse uppercut almost constantly.

What a cool, clean replay, he handled boss 3 and the queen really nicely. Too bad his grabs are so situational, that's what makes him so fun to play for me

>> No.6163580

>>6163573
The grabs are only situational (i.e., risky) without invinc against stalkers, late-level arachnoids, and chrysalises. Everything else, grabs are practically guaranteed (need to make defenders block first though).

>> No.6163587

>>6163580
Wait, I forgot the human enemies. They're a bit risky to grab (without prior invincibility) when they're holding a knife or pulse gun. But it's not an issue considering that the most efficient and easiest way to kill them is with their own guns in the first place.

>> No.6163593

>>6163580
That's only in isolation though, looks like for crowd control dash-attacks and gun is still more safe and effective by far. The grab loops he does against Razor Claws and Royal Guard duo are pretty sick though

>> No.6163606

>>6163593
>That's only in isolation though

As long as there are no stalkers, late-level arachnoids, chrysalises, or humans, you can really just go crazy with grabs against groups of enemies. A couple things to keep in mind when grabbing. 1) moving straight up/down is faster than moving diagonally up/down. 2) grab with your hands, not your body like in other Capcom beat'em ups (i.e., don't try to grab by overlapping the center of your sprite with the center of an enemy's sprite). Grab with your "hands" (i.e., the front part of your sprite of whichever direction you're facing).

But yeah, the dash punch into reverse uppercut should be the focus of Schaefer's strategy more than anything IMO.

Predator Hunter's hitbox for his spinning attack. As you can see, it has more vertical coverage than horizontal coverage. So you want to aim for the top of the enemy's head. Don't try to hit an enemy 45' diagonally from the front, because that exposes your hurtbox.

I still don't understand the 1cc argument.
In the arcades, you would have spent an obscene amount of money getting to the point of knowing how to beat the game.
I can play both games with my wife. 2 is legitimate fun, and arcade bmups are great for the opposite reason for you. She has unlimited lives, so doesn't get frustrated, and it's over in 30 mins.

These things aren't worth obsessing over. Get a life.

What's difficult to understand? A 1cc is a basic milestone that requires you to learn the characters, mechanics, enemies, levels and bosses to a decent level, it makes the games more engaging, more exciting and increases longevity. On the arcades you at least had the natural incentive to do well because real money was at stake, on home ports there's nothing. What credit feeding does is reduce any game to background noise, when playing with your wife I doubt you even paid attention to the game but rather just talked about random shit. It's the natural end result when there's no real pressure to do well, no strategy required, and no cooperation required even. I had to convince my friend to limit our credits when cooping but once we started he didn't want to go back to credit feeding because it completely destroys the games and any fun factor they had outside of just us hanging out with interchangeable background noise.

In the arcades, you would have spent an obscene amount of money getting to the point of knowing how to beat the game.
Arcade games weren't available on consoles for a long time. People who enjoyed them had to spend money to play them. Might as well get good and go for the 1CC. Which means your credits lasted longer, it also gives you a clear goal to play for, and is satisfying to attain.
