Let's talk retro handheld gaming. What do you have and how do you like it? Are you planning on buying one soon? Do you need help?

Be aware of hardware revisions/upgrades and rebranded versions with different colors/features. Be sure to read some reviews before buying, some of these are great, others leave a lot of be desired. Look for a local distributor to potentially save on taxes and shipping.

are there any emulators that let you emulate the joy you felt playing video games when you were 10 or 11 years old rather than just allowing you to play the game but leaving you feeling lifeless and hollow and not really enjoying it because you're an adult now and things are different?

How is NES, SMS, and Game Gear emulation on the GBA? I love the idea of having a handheld that runs on AA batteries that can share batteries with the other AA powered devices I still use rather than me needing to charge it when traveling, but it seems my other options that are more powerful than a GBA only get a few hours of battery life. I saw the Pi Zero based Retroflag GPI recently, but supposedly you're looking at 5-6 hours of play time max off of 3 AAs.

Hey Vita fags, what's so good about the Vita and what is the emulation experience like?
Do you just flash some custom firmware, run RetroArch and load ROMS and their BIOS off a microSD card or something?
Can you use homebrew ROMS and pirated Sony ROMs or does Sony prevent you from doing that?
Does it just werk?
What's the most demanding consoles it can play smoothly without frameskip?
Can it handle SNES games that require special chips such as Starfox? Is N64 and Dreamcast doable?
Do you have to deal with being a part of a Japanese botnet?
What's the best version of the Vita? How customizable is the hardware, can I replace the battery, D-Pad and Buttons with something from China when they wear out?

>Hey Vita fags, what's so good about the Vita and what is the emulation experience like?
Adrenaline for PSP and PSX, Retroarch for everything else.
>Do you just flash some custom firmware, run RetroArch and load ROMS and their BIOS off a microSD card or something?
Downgrade to 3.60, Henkaku, SD2Vita, microSD.
>Can you use homebrew ROMS and pirated Sony ROMs or does Sony prevent you from doing that?
NPSBrowser
>Does it just werk?
Sometimes it loses connection to your storage device on boot and all your games disappear forcing you to rescan and lose all your organization. Backup apps exist to restore it but it doesn't always work.
>What's the most demanding consoles it can play smoothly without frameskip?
PSX through Adrenaline.
>Can it handle SNES games that require special chips such as Starfox? Is N64 and Dreamcast doable?
N64+ is impossible.
>Do you have to deal with being a part of a Japanese botnet?
No, you can remove the 3G modem if you're paranoid or just get a wifi only model.
>What's the best version of the Vita?
1000 for OLED, 2000 for built in memory card and microUSB
>How customizable is the hardware, can I replace the battery, D-Pad and Buttons with something from China when they wear out?

1. Android has high display latency due to the Android compositor, it's roughly 16.7ms on Linux and 66.7ms on Android. Idk about the screen, but being a much lower resolution the response times are probably faster. Most Android devices have more CPU and GPU power however.
2. An Android tablet or phone plus an external controller (wired or bluetooth) is bulky and not very portable. It's also cumbersome to use if you're interested in portablity and ease of use. With a true handheld you can pull it out and use it almost immediately and while you're using it you can get up to grab a drink/bathroom/whatever and come back without having to mess with cables, resting it on your lap, or sitting/laying in an uncomfortable position.

Now there's just that one Powkiddy with the Switch-style face buttons, it sucks. I'd be all over an RG350 with a bigger screen. The unit wouldn't even have to be much bigger. That thing already has a fairly chunky bezel, just slim that down. And I don't know if 5-6" 4:3 screens are readily and cheaply available, but by comparison my GPD XD has a 5.5" 16:9, but only uses 4" in a 4:3 game. A 5-6" 4:3 panel would be plenty big but still probably result in a pocket-friendly system.

You have to remove the case and put it back on afterwards every time you want to use it. *I have an important phone call, let me put this thing up to my ear and look like an idiot.* You can get a dedicated phone and controller set, but that gets expensive and you still have the latency problem.

hey guy. i bought one of those controllers because i too thought what you did, and i ended up giving it away and buying a chink android device with built in controls. my phone didn't fit into it, i couldn't charge my phone while playing it, the chintzy plastic feels pretty bad, the buttons were mushy, the analogs were imprecise, there was more latency than i was willing to put up with, and its a much nicer experience overall having a dedicated device for playing games instead of using your phone.

this thread isn't really about android devices and quite frankly i dont recommend this thing for pre-n64 retro gaming because it has a trash dpad and it doesn't let you navigate the os with the face buttons but the user experience of what you're suggesting just straight up sucks. if you wanna emulate the gamecube on the go then yeah its pretty much your only option but otherwise i wouldn't recommend it to anyone who could get something better unless they only thing they care about is the fact that it costs $20 and they can use something they already have

That's a shame, I really want to get a /rh/ and I've been looking at them in recent weeks, Vita seems to be the clear choice for build quality but it's supposed struggling on some chip SNES games and some PSX titles is really holding me back.

The main competitor is the RG350 I guess but I think that even has issues on the trickier titles. I guess I'll either give in and get a Vita to start my /rhg/ collection or wait for a chink device that can handle both flawlessly.

Based on what I've seen, there's really nothing in this kind of price range that's superior to the Vita for PS1. If you really want to go all out better, a flagship phone with a bluetooth controller or one of those compact Windows handhelds or something would probably do it but that's an order of magnitude more expensive if you don't already have them knocking about.

I would if I had any of my vitas with me anon. Well I can tell you that, aside from my PS1's disc drive apparently not being as healthy as I remember it, the game has some slowdown during basic gameplay compared to my burnt copy running on real hardware. Mine is a modded PAL system too, so in theory it should be at an ever so slight clock disadvantage too. Not unplayable, but a little worse than the slowdown on the first level on my PS1. I don't currently have a VSH menu set up on my Vita, so I can't tell you how much overclocking the PSP side of things helps but I'd imagine it'd at least be an improvement.

tl;dr: Slowdown, playable, probably going to bother you if you're a purist but also going to still be your Jumping Flash fix.

Alright, so Musashi at stock clocks runs pretty decently. Slight slowdown on taking damage or on too many enemies visible at once but honestly, you notice that more in the audio than the gameplay. Also may occur on real hardware, I don't know. There was also some audio crackling going on, just a little, during the custscene with dialogue outside 'spiral tower' or whatever it's called. Didn't change with clock settings but also didn't seem to persist beyond there.

tl;dr: seems just fine, highly playable with some very slight slowdown in crowded moments.

>>6147321
It's one of the options I'm considering, but the lack of a right stick, an L3 and an L2/R2 do kind of make me hesitant. Switch has been making pretty fast progress, I wouldn't call it sucky. I personally don't use mine for anything but switch games but I did test various RA cores for fun and was surprised to see Mupen ran almost every game I threw at it full speed. Look on the HardKernel website for distributors in your area. There are some alternative firmwares on GitHub that allow you to run other systems as well, but keep in mind that it's a very low powered handheld.

Android. As mad as it's going to make the purists here, it has replaced my PSPs as my go-to handheld gaming device. An Ipega controller and RetroArch do most of the work, although I need reicast and Mupen64 for certain games that don't run in RetroArch for whatever reason.
I can't complain at all. I even like PSX on Android better than on PSP just because I don't have to convert every game I want to play and figure out what version on popstation it runs well with (I miss you, emuparadise).
Planning on buying a real gaming phone and a better controller soon. It's the only handheld emulation device capable of running Gamecube, Wii, and PS2 games to any playable extent, so I'm convinced it's the best route, even if hipsters here don't like it.

Other than that, PSP works pretty well for emulating most retro consoles. N64 emulation is broken as fuck, and Megami Tensei 1&2 experience framerate drops on Snes9x, for some reason (but every other SNES game seems to work fine). Aforementioned PS1 emulator is pretty good, being that it was designed by Sony, but the popsloader issue and the convoluted conversion process that doesn't always work for reasons I don't understand are the main barriers.

Yeah, a Linux handheld would be cool, but I won't get on board until one has at least as much power as mid-tier Android devices. I don't want to look cool at the expense of playability.

Can't speak for Vita, but emulation on PSP works fine as long as you have a BIOS file.

Higher-end Android devices can do PS2 through DamonPS2, which is an illegally closed-source port of PCSX2. A lot of people hate it because the developer stole the code and won't release an of it (and sells it for a profit), but you can pirate it and it'll work fine. The other emulator is Play!, but compatibility is bad right now.

I was very surprised when anons told me how weak that MIPS dual core is.
But yesterday this was announced: https://www.libretro.com/index.php/beetle-psx-dynarec-public-beta-out-now-fast-and-accurate-wins-the-race/

I wanted to know why these retro handhelds still insist on using MIPS when ARM cores must be very cheap these days and even an A35 should perform better. But now with this new interpreter for Retroarch, this means that all these underpowered handhelds will become good for Playstation 1?

Yes I could mod it but I don't have a 3d printer to make a custom case or buttons to mod it with. If there was a kit with those specific buttons and case for a slightly higher price that'd be great

I haven't heard of it, what's cool about that chip?

>>6158441
True, but it's still made on a 28nm process with shit yields, a more powerful ARM core on a more modern manufacturing process would probably beat the RK3326 in efficency. Rockchip says it's capable of 1.5 GHz but according to the ODROID developers it's unstable at 1.4, let alone 1.5.

>>6158716
This looks promising if it's accurate.

It's probably because MIPS doesn't have licensing costs. Idk if the Chinese are fabbing it themselves, but the technology is so old that they could.

Buying android device that can emulate PS2 is just a waste. Better just buy a laptop or better yet, just play it on your PC.

You could say the same thing about any of the devices in this thread. I want it because I want to be able to fit my game in my hoodie pocket and take it places or wake up and play in the middle of the night with my covers pulled over my head for half an hour without a hassle.

If you're a big enough fan of the GameBoy/Advance you'll probably already own a flashcart of some description.
Also as with all Analogue products, it'll get mysteriously jailbroken a month after release and allow you to play roms.

The only concern then is what you populate the superfluous cartridge slot with.

How do you avoid input delay from bluetooth controllers? Or are they better now? I haven't tried one since ~2013 or so.

No input delay at all from my Ipega. I still have lag problems with cheap Bluetooth headphones, though, so I'm not sure if controller support is better in general or if you just have to buy a semi-decent brand.

Looks nice if it's efficient and doesn't throttle to shit or kill battery life. Full speed N64/Dreamcast and maybe some 30 FPS Gamecube games might be possible now. Are there any handhelds coming out with that chip?

Vita for vita and psp if you like the games.

I'm personally waiting on the new gpd to see if it'll be able to run up to GameCube and ps2. I love android for the top tier frontends.

SNES games on the 3DS are remarkably good but they aren't 100% compatible.
If you're using SNES9X for Old 3DS for example, it isn't capable of playing Super Metroid + A Link to the Past combo randomizer, due to using an older version of SNES9X that is less accurate, for the benefit of better performance.

Modified SNES VC titles exist though, but that's not a process you'd want to do for randomizer hacks.

Not sure how Retroarch is on the 3DS these days either.
