Hey there /vr/

Any good way to get names off NES and SNES games? Those magic erasers tend to destroy the texture of the plastic.

Is there any chemical that can lift it off the surface without harming the plastic?

I've tried rubbing alcohol 91%, magic erasers, tooth paste mixed with baking soda, lemon juice and a few others.

None seem to get the market completely off

This dissolves most glues/inks (like 99% acetone) and doesn't harm most plastics (unlike 99% acetone). Just dab with a Q-Tip, then wipe off making strokes towards the center of the stain repeatedly. Be sure to test, use in well ventilated area, and rinse/wash off excess immediately.

Don't use on the labels though...

The only reason I can think of is in case one of your friends being a scumbag and stealing one of them.

That happened with me in elementary school with a box of markers I had. Went to my friends birthday party and bam, one of them was sitting on their vcr in plain daylight. I didn't realize they were missing til then. lol I assume they stole them from my backpack while we left for recess. Their backpack was beside mine (because alphabetical order) and they were usually the very last to leave the classroom.

Oh and they had a reputation for stealing shit. So, as much as I hated my mom writing my names on things, I can see the benefit of it.

I bought a game online. The box has a name written in sharpie on the side. It's a NES box. What's the safest way to remove this? I think the outside of the box has a thin layer of plastic/laminate on it, right? I heard that if you use a dry erase marker and draw over the affected area, then rub it off immediately it should work. Otherwise how can you take marker off of a box? Would a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser simply destroy it?

>> No.616072

>>614501
Rubbing alcohol will work. You just have to be patient. Multiple applications should get more than 95% of it off in a single session. I've been collecting for god knows how long (at least 12 years) and I've never had any trouble getting rid of "permanent" marker on cartridges with 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Just remember:

-apply liberally to a paper towel
-GENTLY, with only mild pressure, rub the affected region in a circular motion fairly quickly for a few minutes, until the alcohol seems to be drying up/not as effective
-again, pressure doesn't help, and in my experience actually hinders the progress. Pretend you're polishing a very thin glass cup with a rag.
-wait a couple of minutes
-reapply rubbing alcohol on a dry part of the towel (or a new towel) and repeat

Getting almost all of it off should take less than 10 minutes; usually about 4. Come back to it again later if you seem stuck at the last tiny vestiges of the marker stain, and try rapidly scraping it with your thumbnail before rubbing it with isopropyl.

Say what you will, but Goo Gone never has worked for me. Always just seems to make a bigger mess. I prefer isopropyl all the way.
