Let's settle this once and for all.

How did the Dreamcast compare to the PS2? Was it really that much weaker? Why do Dreamcast games look so much cleaner and nicer today than PS2 games in a lot of cases?

>> No.6142847

>>6142839
Many PS2 games output exclusively in interlaced mode. De-interlacing is hard. Dreamcast can do 480p on most games. Progressive upscaled will always look better than interlaced to de-interlaced upscaled because of less image processing. If you bust out a CRT, they should look the same in interlaced mode.

>> No.6142880

Because the dreamcast actually happens to have the best image quality of all the sixth gen despite releasing so early, while ps2 has the worst image quality of any console post nes yes even worse then n64. As well as having only like 20 games that do progressive scan and actually happens to look WORSE in 480p because developers would lower the color depth.

There's nothing to debate. Dreamcast excelled at simple, colorful cartoon graphics and the PS2 was capable of greatness.

>> No.6142885

The combination of vram too small to hold a 480p framebuffer + mipmapping broken + anti aliasing broken ( so instead developers would go batshit crazy with post processing or downsampling weirdness, meant the ps2 had terrible image quality

>> No.6142926

I could see that Dreamcast had crisper image quality than PS2 at the time. It looked as crisp as a PC. Problem was that PS2 had the games. Timesplitters, Dynasty Warriors 2, Summoner, Twisted Metal Black,

The PS2 destroyed the DC because it was one of the cheapest DVD players in 2000, and it had the support of EA and all their shit sports games. DC didn't have either.

Legitimately the biggest mistake that Sega made with the Dreamcast was to not have a second analog stick. Even moreso, they had less buttons on the Dreamcast controller than on a Saturn controller. The best move would of course been to have those two buttons move to the shoulders (L2 and R2), and have a second analog stick. In that manner, it would have been equal to a PS2 controller, with the exception of analog clicks, which would have been nice too.

There was a ton of games that just weren't compatible with the Dreamcast due to the massive difference in input capability. By my count its 13 inputs for Dreamcast (including 2 variable triggers) versus 18 for the PS2 (including 2 variable triggers).

Dreamcast had lots of sports games. EA didn't have a monopoly on those until the mid 2000s.

Yep, this guy is totally a Sony shill, infiltrating our message board to try and convince us to spend money on a Sony product from.. 20 years ago.. Wait, that doesn't make any sense.

Maybe because it was because on how the marketing handles it. Not to mention the sales was stifled since the Sega Saturn didn't catch on due to conflicts at Sega's headquarters.

Personally, I never tried a Saturn, let alone the Dreamcast. An alternate universe version of myself may own a Dreamcast still, but even he knows that the console had such limitations like not doubling as a DVD player.

You're fucking joking. The N64 with it's 4kb of texture RAM and forced Vaseline filter over a 240p image? With it's composite/S-video output with absolutely no support for component? Don't be ridiculous.

In the year 2000 the Dreamcast was a much better console than the PS2. PS2 didn't have any good games until 2001 and Dreamcast died early that year.

Not hardware enforced at all and could be turned off by developers, except the scaling of 320x240 to 620x240 when in 240p mode. Arguably the screen filtering done in many ps2 game is much worse anyway because its all cheap software based solutions

This. PS2 games look like a blurry mess because of the mandatory interlacing and even look like shit when emulated at a high resolution because of it.
DC doesn't have this problem, although PS2 games had fancier lighting and post processing, the games look much clearer and therefore nicer.
Thankfully there's some people making deinterlaced patches for some games like ace combat.

PS2 was the superior console and had more hype for its launch. DVD video also helped in sales. Dreamcast library is also not that good but that’s more of a personal opinion.

>> No.6143378

The initial entries of both series are PS2 exclusives (except a shitty PC version of Summoner).

The timesplitters sequels are multiplatform and are better games, and the summoner sequel is on gamecube and is not as good a game. This is all well post-Dreamcast relevance, however, and not thread relevant. Timesplitters was the Goldeneye spiritual successor everyone wanted; it was a huge deal. Summoner is a personal favorite but not hugely popular game. It certainly was what I wanted at the time, though.

>> No.6143418

I doubt the DC would have been able to move SH2 or MGS2 let alone FFX or SH3, the DC felt outdated very early in it’s lifetime.

>> No.6143539

Look at DOA2 on both consoles. The PS2 is better at everything except textures.

PS2 > DC

Dreamcast had the benefit of some inspired early titles that really used the hardware well while a lot of the PS2's early years stuff was technically sloppy, but the sheer variety of titles the PS2 had and its longevity gave it plenty of time to shine, the DC didn't have that length of intense development for it, the later PS2 would make the Dreamcast cry in despair and catch fire

The PS2's massive success also had a lot to do with its reputation for poor graphical quality, lots of shovelware, lots of yearly release crap, the titles people think of when they think PS2 (SH, Ace Combat, MGS, Ratchet and Clank, Jak, FF etc.) all mostly hold up
