The monastery in TR2 was always my favorite. That and the Temple of Xian are pretty much where level design in the series peaked. TR3 had some memorable environments, but overall design was confusing and punitive as hell.

I should maybe replay TR4 some time. I know it's a fan favorite but somehow it lacked oomph. I barely remember anything about the levels themselves other than the loading screen frustration.

I will complement Tomb Raider 4 for lots of things. Having new and interesting weapon mechanics for manually aiming and using different ammo, having a great atmosphere and some really interesting and creepy level design, designing the mummies properly, and maintaining a high level of variety with their specific location of Egypt....but the fucking multi-level spanning puzzles are atrociously designed.

>> No.6146040

Lost Artifact is considered the best expansion, and on its own, it ranks up there in level design with the full games. 5 is only considered "poor" because of the lack of spirit and imaginative creativity from the previous 4. 5 is a solid game mechanically speaking and if he likes the levels in it, there's nothing wrong with that.

Which one? The one in India or the one in Tinnos? Neither of them I had any particular trouble with. I think the worst "level" in Tomb Raider 3 was Aldwych, which, if you've played it, I can completely understand why some people were totally turned off from that entire section (London) and even the game as a whole. Lud's Gate was surprisingly easy though. Only levels I remember having trouble with were Aldwych, Thames Wharf, and Lost City of Tinnos, which the last one, seems to go on for-fucking-ever.

Lud's Gate was surprisingly easy though. Only levels I remember having trouble with were Aldwych, Thames Wharf, and Lost City of Tinnos, which the last one, seems to go on for-fucking-ever.

The reason I had "worst" in quotes is because even those levels are frustrating, they're still memorable in a positive way in some parts. The ruins of Aldwych makes it feel post-apocalyptic and creepy. Thames Wharf is very vertical and does its best (and pretty good for the time) at mimicking a city, and Lost City of Tinnos being a gauntlet of traps and testing your skills as a player.

Unlike say in Tomb Raider 2, where the underwater levels go on for-fucking-ever (6 FUCKING LEVELS).

As for the thread:

=BEST
Tomb Raider 3. Coastal Village, Crash Site, and Madubu Gorge are the best levels ever put in a Tomb Raider game. Nevada was also fun, and Antarctica was the best snowy area in any of the Tomb Raider games or expansions.

=WORST
Tomb Raider 1. It's fun and a classic, but compared to its successors, it's severely lacking in variety (no vehicles, technically no outside levels, no harpoon gun for water combat, no flares, no ability to climb ladders, no mid-air spin, all just from the jump from Tomb Raider 1 to Tomb Raider 2).

3 is mostly hated by kids who grew up playing 1 and 2 and knew them so well that they weren't very difficult, then later in life they go on to try 3, which they never played before, and since everything is new to them, they assume that it's just overly difficult and impossible without realizing that it's just 1 and 2 with more mechanics and better graphics. Basically, kids that don't actually like Tomb Raider and are just nostalgia-goggling the previous games because it's what they remember growing up with.

You can tell the real fans from the nostalgic retards by how much they dislike 3 and 4.

>> No.6157125

I had 3 and 4 growing up but never got much further than the training levels. I played 1-3 last year. Got through 1 without any help, needed to check a guide a few times for 2, and 3 was spent more with a guide than without.

I've finally gotten around to playing 4. I've heard about having to backtrack if you miss stuff but I didn't really take it seriously. I got to the Temple of Poseidon without encountering a trident in the previous level so naturally I had no idea wtf I was supposed to do. What made it worse was I couldn't remember how I entered the level so getting back out seemed impossible. Everything up until that point was fine though and arguably as good as Tomb Raider has ever been up to that point. The next level was the Lost Library and the difficulty seemed to spike there. Expecting the rest of the game to get even more bullshit.

20 years later, I played it again and I enjoyed it.
Played it on mednafen, with savestates tho. I thought that if the PC version could save anywhere, why not transfer that mechanic to the ps1 with savestates. This made it for me, otherwise I wouldn't play it.

That would require any sort of self-awarness.
Reminder they've hired so many people for the game and nobody to coordinate them
Reminder everyone did their bit in a vaccum.
Reminder that's why you have record level - dare I use the term - ludonarrative dissonance of the entire fucking decade
Reminder that's why each game is the same as the previous one, including the "character arc" (an arc that never really goes anywhere, since it's starting out 3 times and always halted right after first few steps)

But most importantly, let me riddle you this:
Did anyone, but legal department of SquareEnix asked for this reboot? Because that's the funniest part of the whole narrative around the 2nd reboot fro me. That they need to "reinvent Lara" and "explain how one becomes Tomb Raider (tm) (R)". Do the whole fucking reboot... for the sake of doing a reboot. They literally didn't even plan to make anything else, just a reboot trilogy
Why?
Because Squenix legal realised the only way they can "claim" fully the library they've bought with Eidos is not only to release games in given franchise, but to force a legal situation where they are "the real creators". So not only reboot the whole fucking thing, BUT intentionally and deliberately use un-numerated title for it. They did that with Thief (which, despite what marketing might convinced you into, isn't T4ief, but Thief) and they did that with Tomb Raider. Put "Tomb Raider 1" or "Tomb Raider first game" into search engine on public IP or in library. Guess what will pop-out
And why? Because this is Squenix. They literally collect IPs for the sake of it. They don't plan to release any games (the trilogy is a pure accident, because it sold just too well with TR'13 to ignore it, but turned into a wet fart right after it), they don't plan to - God forbit - resell the rights. They just want to own it, cause that's their company policy

And to rub some salt: they've bought Eidos by pure accident, planning to get different company

This situation is basically like tr4 ending for Lara.

Levels is fine too but is there something like a full campaign worth of levels with a proper story tying things together? I guess basically I want a new classic TR.

Of course there is, by the dozen.
So if you are fine with 3-5 level long "mini games", then trle.net is your best friend.

Got any recommendations? Is every custom level made for TR4 only?

Nevermind that last question, just checked the site.

It's YUGE. So my only advice is to playing blindly anything with rating of 8.5 and higher. Should keep you busy for a quite a while. Generally don't go for levels below 7, unless they are some of the classic ones. That site and library is running pretty much from the inception of the scene, so there is a lot of stuff to pick.
When in doubt, unironically google for "must-play TRLE" or "best of TRLE" and you will get some nice sets.
It's really impossible to go wrong with Level Editor, as long as you keep the rating above 7 and preferably above 8.5

1. It's the only TR in which Lara isn't a mass-murdering lunatic.

>Not even part of your shitty discussion - and I think we have a separate thread dedicated to bitching about TRs you (as in - all the anons you) don't like, but this still reminds me a great scene from a great movie.

I like all the original TR's, so you aren't referring to me

Except AOD, which I will argue is not part of the classic series since it was released literally half-finished.

There's a word for that, it's called "expansions"....Or if you want to get really technical "unofficial addons"

I disagree, 7's are perfectly fine, sometimes even 6's. The TRLE community will give a level a low rating just because it's too easy (which if you're familiar with the difficulty of the custom levels, means it's average difficulty), or it wasn't "unique enough."

7 and higher is fine. Anything 5 or lower is generally garbage. 6 is a toss-up

Just to back up my argument a little more with some examples.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-zOMXGfiPg

This custom level has a rating of 6.13 on TRLE, but as you can see, the quality is still pretty good.

>> No.6158314

>>6157540
My point was to assure top quality with zero doubts about it, not to say where the bar is really hanging. So 8.5 and above are a sure-fire, always.

Which is what I love the most. She simply didn't give a single fuck, especially in terms of TR3 and TLR

You clearly do care, since you took the time to actually post an in-depth response as to what you think.

>That game simply was extensive beta test of engine capabilities, to the point the entire team come clear about it on many separate occassions, both alone and as a group.
Yea, but that doesn't mean it aged poorly. In fact, Mario 64 was a proof of concept, that doesn't mean that it wasn't a success you tard, in fact, the reason it still holds up is because as a proof of concept, it proved their concept worked, was fun, marketable, and could succeed being developed further, which is exactly what happened.

>And then TLR came out, they've finally nailed it...
LOL, wrong, they didn't "nail it" since they nailed it from TR1 and on, which is why they got rave reviews and sold gang-busters. They were adding more shit and experimenting with more and more stuff up to TR4 and even on to Chronicles. You have no idea what the fuck you're talking about.

>because who wants to play the same game once more. Because we all know how "identical" TR1-4 are, right?
Hope this is troll logic, since people not only bought the games in millions, but sales increased after 1 and stayed afloat up until the 4.

>you are both fucked up and arguing about pointless shit, while OP is a faggot pushing retarded narrative since August '19. Fuck off already, cunt.
The only narrative you're pushing here is the one you just posted. The fact that this triggers you so much means you're just in denial about the facts that the games are still great, hold up extraordinarily well, and that you're in the minority. You're trying to desperately cope so fucking hard right now it isn't even funny (though it kind of is).
