Love the series. There's still so much potential for a modern Twisted Metal. But they really need to give it to a new developer. Even Drawn To Death didn't go well at all for David Jaffe.

For one the underwater themed metal soundtrack was mind blowing as a kid, also you can hold your shoulder buttons and push other buttons that correspond to different weapons you have in board to pull off some pretty killer combos without having to fiddle with cycling through weapons. superior car combat game coming through

>> No.6147451

I've played these games for a long time, still play them, much more than most people would. TM2 is so great in that the special attacks add so much depth. It's where the series peaked in terms of ideas:

>freeze attack gets you free additional damage; stops annoying cars from running away
>shield is a bullshit deflector; five seconds of invulnerability for equally bullshit-cheating-MK-tier AI
>mines can break the tail of pursuers, also deal decent damage
>jumping can get you out of tight spots and allows you to perform potshots
>rear attacks allow you to damage pursuing cars instead of having to run away, turn around and then face forward just to fight back
>variously different and dynamic stages change the pace of battles so you have to use different tactics on each
>tight controls if you get used to them
>memorable final boss

And then there's the bad, especially the goddamn AI:

>blatant cheaters, worse than MK on hardest difficulty
>100% accurate deflection shots with weapons that don't have tracking
>spam-happy, can fire much faster than you because they don't have cooldowns
>unlimited inventory and special attack meter which leads to infinite freeze attacks that render you helpless and trapped until death if you're caught
>experience different physics; homing missles just make them hop while they send the player sliding out of control and helpless until they stop sliding
>not very smart pathfinding, which is made up for with all of the above so it's much more intimidating to lose
>collects pickups that they don't need due to unlimited inventory and robs you of resources
>the player can't break out of Twister's special attack while the AI has a very high chance of escaping

For as much shit as the game throws at me, I still love it; sound design is so satisfying and it feels great to play once you beat it, especially on Hard in a single session. TM3 and TM4 aren't BAD games like the majority of people make them out to be, they just didn't have the same charm.

>> No.6147480

>>6143351
The first one had shit tons of firing modes. You needed to input combinations with the dpad then execute with the machinegun shooting button. Like, IIRC up-down-up-mg with the mortar shot the huge shell that made a crater (fucking dynamic geometry modification on the PS1!), up-up-mg with the missile launcher set off the rocket engine of a missile without releasing it, giving you a huge boost etc

>>6147697
The PC version is just not the same. It's a pretty bad port. It's okay but there's a lot of things wrong with it that experienced players who'd transition to it would get thrown off by a lot of things:

>Outlaw 2's special weapon is broken in that it's only a one-hit attack, when it's supposed to be two hits, thus only dealing half the damage; the same goes for the Lightning pickup
>Shield lasts three times as long and is really broken; by the time it wears out, your special attack meter is already recharged enough to use another one immediately
>all missiles are the same color making it impossible to visually identify what's coming at you
And normally you shouldn't rely on just seeing it, but also being able to hear the sounds each missile makes, but both of these are supposed to be used together, not just one or the other
>stiff camera, which may be a good or bad thing
>netcode leaves a bit to be desired; okay for LAN but over the Internet weird shit can happen
>sounds have lower sample rate, use more compression, and lots of cool sound design effects are missing
>visual inconsistencies all over the port

I know there's a Discord server that's made a modified version of the game but I don't like those changes either. If the game played exactly like the PS1 version did, in terms of fixing the missile colors, Outlaw 2's special and the shield time, it'd be good. I mean, for fucks sake the TM1 PC port came out a year or two before and has differentiating missile colors like the original PS1 version has.

>Favorite Game
Black. It's just so stupidly bleak, grimdark and edgy. It's the kind of game where you can tell one of the underlying thoughts were on how to make it as offensively dark, disturbing and cruel as possible.
There's really not a lot of good people in that 'world', many people are victims of horrible cruelties and injustices for little good reason, and many are just demented and insane so they don't understand better, it's a hopeless and angsty setting, normally I wouldn't be *too* much of a fan of that, but it feels like TMB does it with the right sense of self-awareness.
Alice In Chains' Dirt album would be an excellent soundtrack for this game.

>Favorite Character
Either Calypso, for being such a funny cunt, or Raven, because I can relate to mopey teen goths and she comes across as the least sadistic and evil (which I know is the point with TMB, and I actually like that stuff too).

>Favorite Vehicle
Darkside, I love to ram shit with a big heavy truck.

>Favorite Weapon
The satellite rocket barrage from TMB, tied with the machinegun upgrade.

>Favorite Ending
No-Face getting his revenge on the doc who mutilated and disabled him. He had a simple (sort of) malicious wish, and Calypso was gracious enough to grant it without any catches or monkey paw shit.

I loved Twisted Metal 2 and was waiting months upon months for Twisted Metal Black to be released. It was first released in US, I'm in Europe.

Then 9/11 happened and the MOTHER FUCKERS censored the game in Europe.

NO cutscenes. NO ability to shoot down an airplane in that one level. That last one I could have tolerated but no cutscenes at all???

The game was an empty shell, I've never been so disappointed by a game in my life. Since then I've promised myself to never buy another Twisted Metal game just to make sure I don't give them money and that I don't get disappointed again. I've kept that promise.

Man, I was so pissed I tell you what. It was uncensored in USA and censored beyond reason in Europe. You'd think they would just cut out the plane scene from the movies but NOPE they just removed them all.

The derpiest part is that they left the credits movie in the game and it showed a fucking plane crash so they censored for NOTHING. I was so pissed and it still pisses me off to this day, I fucking hate all types of censorship.

Twisted Metal 2 ("World Tour") was my favorite PSX game as a kid.

i think they did it to compete with ratchet & clank but what i found strange was that they decided to mimic instead of sticking to what made their game different than ratchet & clank, ie classic unarmed attacks and a more cozy world.

maybe they were out of ideas, after all you can do a lot more if you add guns to your game. but i remember i didn't like the direction of Jak at all, felt like a budget version of ratchet & clank.

never giving them money ever again. i might pirate it someday, still havent seen the story for any of the characters.

lol can't believe how butthurt i still are over this 20 years later. i think what really got to me was that it was uncensored in USA, the country that cared the most about 9/11, and censored outside. i had no idea that those skyscrapers even existed before they didn't, i just wanted to play my game i had been looking forward to for so long

>Absurd load times
They were pretty long.
>Annoyingly loud and awful menu music
The music was amazing.
>Difficult to navigate menu
There are barely any options to navigate, how can it be hard?
>Terrible online infrastructure, getting kicked often before games start
Happened often at the beginning, less after a few months.

Literal cretin. Old games make you play the same content over and over to see some shitty pictures. In PS3 game you have unique encounters and huge bossfights.

TM3 kept mostly the same cast from TM2 but changed the physics(the cars flip over way too much) and the endings and tone are way inferior to TM1 and TM2

TM4 fixed the physics(if's the best playing ps1 TM game imo) but they replaced most of the cast with shitty new charactersand the overall tone is cheesy. It's still a pretty good game overall though

I just played Head On on PS2 for the first time and it's actually really fun. I wonder what the odds are that Sony ever gives us a remastered or remade collection. These games were just, so good and now the genre is just.. gone. If things like car soccer, rocket league, shit can be popular why couldn't something like this? I think someone just needs to put in the effort.

Really unlikely. The 2012 version was a colossal flop even with Jaffe and Campbell at the wheel because Sony was constantly changing the scope of the project. It went from a PSN only downloadable game with the gang concept and to update the gangs over time to represent more TM characters. Then Sony wanted it to be a full retail release after a good response to its E3 reveal and they had to cram in the single player mode as a last minute addition. They didn't have much time to do it so we just got the story mode we got and a dumb sequel hook.
You'd think car combat would be a slam dunk genre to bring back now that Battle Royale is super popular but Sony just isnt interested. Jaffe is semi-retired and rants on youtube. Scott Campbell has left the industry or is working for a mobile developer. Sony's not interested in fast action arcade style games any more. It's probably never coming back and that TV show will likely be canned in development.

Shit man, look at all the characters and ideas that'd be perfect for an anthology show about different tournaments and different winners, even all the characters who've only shown up once like Club Kid or Pizza Guy could be retooled into something new.

I actually remember being really interested in the PS3 game, but I didn't have a PS3 due to all Sony's fuck ups. It's gotta be obvious to them that the IP could do better if taken seriously with PS4s massive install base.
What about Vigilante 8? Think that one has a shot? That was the only other car combat game I played that felt as fun as Twisted Metal.

Gotta say, I preferred the feel of Interstate '76 to all of the other vehicular combat games, even if Vigilante 8 was a spinoff it just felt so different.
Basically MechWarrior 2, but in an old 70s muscle car.
