I liked Spirit Track's Link and Zelda relationship because it was like an episode of the Zelda cartoon, where Zelda turned into a ghost and followed Link around. Kind of a crazy coincidence, unless someone at Nintendo in Japan is actually a fan of the cartoon.

It was cartoony and lighthearted, I don't think it was meant to be complex.
I wouldn't say OOT's relationship is complex, since they barely knew each other, but it is subtle and mysterious. OOT had a different artistic approach than Spirit Tracks. Haven't played SS.

>I don't think it was meant to be complex.
You're right. I used a bad example. Spirit Track was intentionally not complex, but it does have the romantic implications at the end, which is why I (erroneously) mentioned it.

But I just really can't help but like Link and Zelda's relationship in OoT. At the beginning it feels like two kids playing hero together, trying to catch that mean ol' Ganondorf in the act, punctuated by small dialogue bits like the Guard at the Kakariko gate laughing at you for giving him that note from her. Of course, as the game goes on, Ganondorf as a threat becomes real, Zelda has to run away from the castle, Link gets trapped in the Sacred Realm for seven years until he's an adult. The whole thing gets turned on its head.
Zelda's speech at the end has a lot of regret in it, she knows she screwed up in how she ended up using Link and sends him back in time.

Plus there's that whole dynamic Link has with Sheik, which is sort of interesting by itself.

It's like 60-75% of the way there. If the sequel puts enough time between the two to have some significant rebuilding to HCT, actual dungeons activated by whatever the hell kicks off the plot, and enemy variety they'd pretty much have it. The only new gameplay angle I could think of was a Link-portable version of the shrine batteries to power what I'd hope to be new Sheikah runes/tech of some sort. I also hope they expand the anti-aging rune to give us prime-years Purah, Robbie, Jerrin and Impa.

I got the mario odyssey art book, and all of it is so bright, whimsical and striking. And a lot of it is still done in the SMB2/3/World art style. Most of these were drawn by professionals. Game art back then just had a style that seems less polished than what we get today. Also keep in mind a lot of this art was intended to stimulate the player’s imagination, while today game art is all concept stuff used during the design process. Both can be nice and interesting but there’s a difference in the feeling the end result gives off.

The loss of booklets is the number 1 thing I blame for this shift. Increased graphical fidelity may also make a lot of people think this sort of art is less important, as a game’s visuals are taken a lot more literally than they used to be.
