The GF and refining systems are addictive as hell, and there are obscure secrets everywhere. It also has the best OST and everything (the world, characters, monsters, towns, and whatnot) is very pleasant aesthetically. I'm playing it right now and I can't stop playing cards against that guy in the desert prison to get a Rosetta Stone (1/256 after winning a game).

Nigger wut? Tell me another JRPG with better character development. It's the only one i've ever played with relatable characters that you can actually form some kind of emotional connection with.

It also gets bonus points for being a JRPG where you never have to tediously grind levels. Only other ones I can think of are the Suikoden games.

Because the whole things feels like some sort of fever dream that you're trying to make sense of. The characters, the gameplay, the plot, the directions the game decides to take things and the directions that they decide not to and on top of that, the music re-enforces that dreamy atmosphere that's present throughout the game.

Great game for maybe the wrong reasons tbqh

That's pretty interesting. I'd rather replay VIII than rewatch Twin Peaks personally. I play it every few years, most recently on its 20th birthday. If you play it assuming R=U it plays out as an outstanding tragedy.

>> No.6141849

>>6141321

I guess once you got the idea in your head that actions such as declining to mix were reliably and predictably advancing the state of the random number generator, then you'd be in a position to just start repeating that kind of action different numbers of times to see what the result would be. And then once you got to the first number of repetitions that gave a good result, you'd stop, try it again a few times with the same number just to make sure, and then publish your discovery.

I wouldn't expect somebody to discover that 54 number purely by accident. And I wouldn't expect them to have performed some complex calculation that directly produced the result "54". That kind of thing tends to come from a limited theoretical understanding of how the game works - enough understanding to justify a brute-force trial of fifty or a hundred different numbers, but not enough to allow the exact answer to be obtained directly from a formula.

I dunno though, maybe it was different in this case, I don't really know FF8.

Based. My favorites are IX, V and VII. I stopped after X but for me the Playstation 1 and Super Nintendo eras were the golden age for sure. I love how you have them all next to each other at the top of your list behind only X. The order is within that will depend on individual taste of course but I would be interested to hear if anyone prefers any of the NES games or anything post X to any of the 6 Super Nintendo and Playstation 1 games and if so, why.

Mine is:

IX > VII > V > VI > VIII > IV > III > I > II

I have no trouble beating the game, my hatred of level scaling is a matter of principle. its basically a way for developers to avoid balancing the game section by section. To make matters worse, the game is still completely broken even with level scaling. Its a shame because I love many things about ff8, but the combat system is absolute trash because they tried so hard to be different.

>> No.6146328

>>6145854

I played FF1 as a kid and loved it then so I can remember that while playing it now, which is kinda nice-ish. Also the game doesn't add a lot of padding the way 3D JRPGs tend to do so it won't drive me insane while I wait for the game to finish playing itself so I can get back to playing it.

I can't deal with any 3D Final Fantasy game. FF7's superdeformed characters look like garbage to me, the "cool" look of FF8's characters nauseates me, the gaudy baroque costumes in FFX and FFXII endlessly irritate me... the cutscenes are too long, the battles are too slow, and once voices come in you can't even read at your own pace anymore. It's just bloat upon bloat and I can't handle it, no matter how adorable Vivi and Steiner may be.

If you don't mind frequently waiting then FFIX is probably going to be vastly superior to FF1 for you, I guess. I do mind frequently waiting though. I mind it a lot.

(I haven't played FF2 or FF3.)

I mean in practice I'm much more likely to play an action game. Because I want to do things, not wait. But if I had to play Final Fantasy I'd choose the first over any of the 3D ones. (I'd prefer FF6 to any of those, though.)

Hm I guess I might pick FFXIII over the earlier 3D ones, too. That one seems to streamline out some of the parts where you might expect to be playing it, which is another way of getting around the problem of mixing playing with waiting. If you're ALWAYS waiting then it's not a bad game after all, because it's not really even a game, it's a movie... well but then it might be a BAD movie, but at least I could look at Fang and masturbate. And the monster designs are really good I think. They had a real artist working on monster designs in that game.

I prefer it to be different even when it's broken, because traditional JRPGs are either very easy (like most FFs) or require a lot of mindless grinding. Level scaling makes more sense for games that deviate from the traditional XP leveling, Romancing Saga did the same thing to make an example.

"I don't think I have what it takes to make a good action game. I think I am better at telling a story."

-Hironobu Sakaguchi

I think it's an interesting statement in lieu of the fact that he also said IX was his favorite and closest to his intentions all along for Final Fantasy (although V was his favorite of the games he was a lead designer on.) The first one is like this interpretation of pencil and paper role playing games with influences from previous PC RPG video games and Dragon Quest. It really has its own thing going on like how spells reset on the basis of days.

It's understandable but interesting how you prefer I to IX because there's less waiting in battles, because going back to I on NES I get taken aback by how long battles chug on for. Of course, IX is no better and has even less of an excuse because it could have been faster, and instead you're just waiting for 3D environments, cinematic camera angles and animations to play out taking their own sweet time. IX is particularly slow even in comparison to VII and VIII and I don't think that the developers even processed that people might mind at the time because being cutting edge was the most important thing.

That also makes the fact that you like XIII particularly funny, I guess because that game is so brazenly a "passively spectate as pretty things happen on the screen" game that there's no pretense of interaction anyway. Not that the game does not have strategy or gameplay, but only at advanced levels and only if you seek it out. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's no pretense, so your mind doesn't have to go back and forth between feeling participating and waiting for things to chug on, so you can relax and enjoy the show. It does also help that the graphics are as far along as they are because everything flows more smoothly in the game as a consequence and the fully realized proportional anime art style is the least likely to offend anyone's tastes as a consequence.
