I love the MS cause it showed me in 1987 that Nintendo was a brand for plebs.

>Got the system and some Games.
>Told some friends I got the Master system and I am playing Double Dragon coop with my sister.
>Got called a liar cause "You can't play with 2 player on console"
>After school I showed them you could
>Had to kick their pleb asses out after 2 hours playing.

Same shit when I got 3D glasses and Outrun for exemple.

The SG-1000.
no, that's a fucking lie, even if it has a handful of neat games
>Star Jacker
>Exerion
both are cut down arcade ports, but I still play 'em a bunch
>Hang On II
it's like the SMS version, but with uglier graphics and different course layouts (oh, and the background music plays during races, which always pissed me off about the SMS version)
>GP World
not actually an arcade port despite being named after Sega's LaserDisc based racing game, it's a pretty standard Pole Position game that plays okay

I don't even think I'd say the SMS, because the SMS library kinda just sucks
like, it's still not that bad and there's a few things I like
>R-Type
it's very well done, and there's a secret level, but it's still a 30fps port of the game
>Space Harrier
this port is actually kinda terrible and hyper choppy but I love it for some reason
would also mention After Burner on SMS, but you can literally hold left and dodge everything for most of the game
and now that you know this, the game is outright ruined forever
any time you're in trouble, you'll just do it and you won't be in trouble anymore, until very late in the game
>Kenseiden
this game is great
>Sonic 1
impressively solid platformer with nice graphics

anyone mentioning Psycho Fox should be shot, that game controls like ass
the only people who say it's good grew up with it and didn't have anything else

>>6134148
it really is
shame Sonic 2 SMS fucking blows

>>6134101
I have zero fucking idea why it didn't ship with FM in the west.
fuck, there are western-exclusive SMS games that have FM soundtracks, so it was definitely planned
was kinda odd that games were either all-FM or all PSG too (might have been some inconsistent volume mixing thing), Genesis games get to use PSG

the sound being so lame stems from the SG-1000, which is literally just the ColecoVision with a different memory map
and the SMS is a direct descendant of the SG-1000, just with a better video chip and more memory

>> No.6134329

Wonderboy in monster land is one of the best games ever but it's also on the pc engine and so is wonderboy 3 the dragons curse so I gotta go with that. Master system had a ton of dope games like kenseiden, the rastan port, black belt, the Mickey mouse games, and way more but the pc engine just had way more that even. That might be nostalgia for me too cause two of my friends had turbo grafxs growing up and I got to play a lot of blazing lazers, dungeon explorer, and neutopia and I even liked games like China warrior (thought it was just a better kung fu), and keith courage (the alpha sword is a pain in the ass to buy but otherwise I thought the game was pretty good actually).

>What old PC sounded like this natively?
Literally the PC-98 series (the same FM block used in the PC-98's OPN and OPNA chips is used in the Genesis OPN2).
Most machines didn't ship with a sound card from the factory, but there were several models that did and it was a very popular option due to gaming.

Closer to home, a broad range of tones possible on the OPL2 or OPL3, as found on many PC compatible sound cards, are doable on the the OPN series, and vice-versa.
A lot of PC compatible systems shipped with one (or a clone, thanks to the OPL series' high popularity with the Sound Blaster series of sound cards) installed.

There are a few big differences (the OPL2/3's big thing is adjustable waveforms instead of just pure sine and the OPL2 is only 2 operator vs the 4 operator OPN series -- the OPL3 does support 4-op modes and can produce sounds even closer to the OPN series), but being FM chips made by Yamaha, they have many similar characteristics in both synthesizer parameters and overall tone.

The Super Scaler games were Sega's mega-hits.
Not bringing them home would have been insane.

mind you, the Genesis's lack of scaling seems kind of absurd given just how popular these games were (fuck, the machine launched with Space Harrier 2), although given that the project would have been started several years in advance, while Sega was only just coming onto the scene with Super Scaler games, it's not that unreasonable

This being another one, though we had no idea about it at the time

One more that hadn't been hit yet in this thread. Having over the most important wave of distribution to fucking Tonka of all people. Why? Were they told that Tonka would "soon" be a part of Hasbro? Were they given some kind of killer pitch convincing them the distribution of video games consoles was parallel to the distribution of toy trucks? Did they just have no other option?

They may have been better off letting Tectoy do it from the beginning and just smuggling hundreds of thousands of consoles into the US like coccaine.
