Sup boomers. Are there any nice HUD updates/alternatives for Quake 1?

Using Quakespasm for crunchy pixels and vanilla feels, but the HUD feels weird at high res.

Also hols shit Arcane Dimensions and some of the map jam packs I've been playing are fucking great. I thought the Doom community put out some great stuff, but Quake mappers are next level, and I've been ignoring it this whole time. I feel like a dumbass for missing out.

decino's live stream confirms that the most simultaneous players you can expect in multiplayer Doom is probably under 200 (it maxed out at 250 with 220+ active players).
It's currently no longer turning into a lagfest when limited to 150 in instagib mode.

Could even litter jigsaw boxes around the maps like how they made the pig work in DBD. Just pop em on the enemies head and they run around panicing, or just say fuck it and attack until they explode.

Blood Deathwish had like an entire map based on SAW and it was awesome.
A bear trap that turns the enemies into kamikazes and explode right next to them like they're begging for help.

All those triangles add up to 180 degrees. This is euclidean, learn to math brother.

>> No.6127879

Euclidean geometry is built on basic geometric axioms you learned in school. If one of those axioms is false, geometry is non-euclidean.
For example parallel straight lines drawn in euclidean geometry can't intersect.
Non-euclidean geometry allows building straight lines that start out paralel, but can intersect.
In euclidean geometry straight lines may intersect in a single spot, but not more. Non euclidean geometry allows any amount of intersections to be possible, and so on.

You can defend the concepts of Marathons designs as they are decent, but if you are to tell me the artstyle is anything less than atrocious you are either lying to yourself or have nostalgia and played it back in the day which given this board is unlikely unless you're LARPing.
Marathons textures are putrid and are mapped to misalign and repeat endlessly.
The cartoonish artstyle was so panned even back in the day it was abandoned in M2 and Infinity.

>> No.6128073

I have zero nostalgia for Marathon, first time I had anything to do with it was playing as the security officer in Samsara. That said, I think a lot of its artstyle has a certain charm to it. Its mechanics are pretty awful going back to it, and what the hell is accuracy with some of these weapons, but it wasn't exactly visual garbage. Hell those shotguns and their reload twirl are slick as fuck.
The map textures aren't exactly great, but there wasn't a lot to compare them too at the time, and they were ugly-yet-cleaner than competition like wolf/doom/blake/etc at the time so they were trying something different, cant fault that too much.

Can you explain what the fuck all this purple stuff is? I gather it has something to do with madness combat but none of the released episodes have spooky purple energy, only red. Is there a teaser for episode twelve out or what?

>> No.6128092

No, no. It's 9900cc aka Sokar Purple.
tl;dr: It's not a mainline series, but it is a "fan" series (can it be even considered a fan series if krinkels has had involvement with it's development?)

>> No.6128103

tl;dr: Consider REALM an official-unofficial 'side story' like Dedmos was. Krinkels, Cheshyre and the usual madness cast had a say in it's development and they try to avoid overlap. Any feeling towards MC11 is intentional.
In essence, no. It's not MC12.
But it IS somewhat related to the mainline series as it starts loosely when MC10 ends.

>> No.6128104

That explains why I'd never heard of it. I never got into any fan madness stuff.

>> No.6128113

Yeah. It's pretty much the "de-facto" alternative to the mainline at this point and tries to stick to madness while doing it's own thing.
And again, it's as close to "official" as a fan project can get without actually being official.

Greetings Doom Thread, I asked this before but didn't get much reception (that I saw, I had to leave after a time)

A friend and I are trying to play the Wrath of Cronos mod for Hexen in multiplayer, but we have a bug where whenever we portal into a new zone, the next time we portal crashes the game. Only happens in multiplayer; singleplayer is fine, we can portal anywhere like it's going out of style.
We tried a slew of programs to run into the exact same problem every time.

LZDoom gave us the 'most' success, but we're stumped and can't seem to get far at all. Any help or suggestions, all appreciated.

>> No.6128634

Well I'm using mouselook, so not entirely. I just have no idea how much the default gzdoom settings deviate from the original experience. I'm happy with the way it looks but there are a lot of options that have to do with gameplay (explosions, what boundaries monsters can traverse, etc.), and I don't know if these are more edge cases or things that have drastic gameplay consequences.

Thanks, watching now. As far as the prboom+ rec, I haven't had any hiccups or slowdowns. Is this more an issue with mods? I have a decent rig so maybe I won't notice any difference.

>Is this more an issue with mods?
Yeah, vanilla maps run along fine. Problems arise when you start playing maps with hundreds and thousands of monsters on them, or when you try out some particle heavy mods.

Oh, a few more things that can have a noticeable impact on gameplay.
Jumping and crouching may break some maps. Most notably, I think, is E1M5 in Doom 1, where they allow you to skip a large part of the level.
And the "infinite actor height" setting can be important as well. If you have it on, you can't do stuff like running under the cacodemons or running on top of someone's head, which can also affect balance.

So the pointers to keep in mind when creating a map?

>> No.6128765

1) follow Romero's principles (find them on the wiki)
2) interconnectivity is important. Make new shortcuts to the old areas open up once player achieves an important milestone (key/switch/encounter)
3) Try to avoid maps that are all squares and rectangles. Add some natural looking evnironemnts like caves or outdoor area, or curved walls/rooms to spice things up.
4) When player revisits an area, repopulate it with new monsters
5) Don't forget to place enough resources to overcome obstacle. A good way to do that - when testing the map, whenever you die in a spot, put some more health/armor or whatever else you didn't have enough in that area.
6) Don't forget about the light level effects.
7) If you aren't aiming at ZDoom only, don't test on GZDoom. Test on prBoom/Crispy - that way you'll avoid some not immediately obvious zdoom-isms.

This is especially important.
Also be mindful that, while "vanilla" being used to refer to stock gameplay is usually valid, in the context of mapping and playtesting, "vanilla" specifically refers to the original engine, so try to avoid claiming a map is vanilla if you didn't playtest with the original engine (or chocolate doom).

That's an obvious flaw. I get that you tried to transition into Smooth Doom and Dead Marine, but it's jarring.

Here's how I'd do it:
After gore mods, rewrite the "we could be here all day" line into something like "there are many more quality of life tweaks, check the description for them" and provide a list with a one sentence writeup about what each addon does. Maybe show a really quick montage of them or their options, I dunno while that text is on screen, not focusing on any one in particular. Keep the IDCLEVER recommendation, it's good.
Then, to have the transition into DM, say "small addons are fine and all, but what about a more complete package?" and continue with the video.

Also, cleaner transitions between categories wouldn't hurt.

Doom 1 has fantastic level design, through all 4 episodes. Doom 2 on the other-hand is really hit or miss. There's some series-defining levels in that game like Underhalls, and then well....Barrels o' Fun

90's FPS's generally had some of the best level design in all of gaming though, if you consider Doom 1, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Turok 1, Dark Forces, Half-Life, Aliens vs Predator, Blood, Quake, Rainbow Six.

Honestly there are western female heroines and characters that look great, it doesn't all have to be anime. I think it has more to do with manga authors having an infatuation with kawaii and moe shit, so most of the women they make end up looking vapid and plasticy. Or even worse, like adult-baby's.

Also that manga was not trying to shit on Western art just emphasizing how much substance over style it has always been unlike Eastern way of doing the opposite.

I like anime except for the extreme weeb shit. But I cant deny Japan has a huge fucking point when they say western characters are ugly, because they are. Even when trying to be sexy. And of course I am not saying we should go for just bimbo fan service if the game does not need it, depends on the vision of the creator.

I honestly hope the pendulum swings the other way fast but looking at current politics and how fucking limp wristed some creative people and corps are I doubt it.

I got a bad impression of the whole LCA thing though, as I'm sure many here did. Back when I was new to Zandronum, I sorted servers by population and saw that there was one with 14~ odd players. I joined right at the start of a new map, and was met by a complete cacophony of various sound effects from different games, along with dying within 10 seconds because there was a golden/blue demon moving around at lightspeed and tearing through players. And I swore that some cheesy orchestral "epic" mp3 music was playing underneath all of it.

>then, Dell and Gold Key Comics published the series from 1956 to 1982
>this version of Turok showcase a pre columbian native american called Mandan who is trapped along his brother Andar in an isolated valley populated by dinosaurs after getting lost inside a cavern network in the carlsbad area
>in 1992 Valiant Comics remaked Turok, the dinosaur valley become The Lost Lands, a land where demons, dinosaurs and aliens flourish and where "time has no meaning", a cosmic anomaly causes time in The Lost Lands to move in a self-contained loop
>then, the Turok universe is merged with Unity, the Valiant Comics universe, here the main villain is a psychotic super-powered being known as Mothergod that uses the Lost Lands as a base of operations, she outfits dinosaurs with intelligence-boosting implants
>turok isn't the character's name anymore but a title meaning Son of Stone, the Turok must protect the barriers between this dimension and the others, the axis of all worlds being the Lost Lands, a place where creatures from across time and space had been dragged
>The Campaigner is one of Mothergod's experiments, a confederate prisoner who was held in a brutal union pow camp where he was forced to fight daily to survive until he was drawn into the Lost Land during an encounter on earth with Turok, he was deemed a logical choice to be made a Campaigner
>he seeks an ancient artifact known as the Chronoscepter, a weapon so powerful that it was broken into pieces to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands, and plans on using a focusing array to magnify the Chronoscepter's power, destroying the barriers that separate the ages of time and rule the universe

and another anon posted this:
>/co/ here, it was at one point but that's no longer accurate. Turok originated in the 60s from the publisher Gold Key comics, who died off in the 70s or 80s I believe. In the 90s the Gold Key characters were revived by a new publisher, Valiant, who also introduced some of their own characters, including Shadowman. Valiant died and everything was picked up by Acclaim, who started making their own comics and using the properties in games. But then after Acclaim went bankrupt, the rights to the Gold Key characters went one way and the rights to the Valiant characters went the other. They're published by two different companies now

like i said it's a fun little episode but it's not worth the $20 they're charging for it. i think it would've been look a lot more fondly if it was a free expansion or update or if they sold world tour at the same price as the megaton edition.

the worst part is you can't really pirate the episode because of the new weapon & enemy type which don't work even with the compatibility patch (they're in the game but you can't interact with them in eduke and vice versa).

Archviles were outliers in the roster for a good reason, though. No other monster looked even remotely close to them. Solved the ghosting issue, though it snuck again in one frame but its no big deal, tried to sync the end sequence to the music, added a couple more action clips at the end, changed the clip for universal gibs with footage of the new defaults and reworked the section before Dead Marine, I also tried to smooth clip transitions a bit.
Sadly I could not render above 1080p, but I did render at 50mbs, I hope that helps a bit with the YT compression issue.

I'll leave it unlisted for a while while I go cook dinner, then I'll put the links in the description and hopefully we can publish it, dunno if it will show fresh in the feeds but that will also help catch bogus copyright strikes if there are any.
