6126901 No.6126901 [Reply] [Original]

Hear me out, /vr/. I have played through Super Mario RPG, and I think it is a good if not great game. However, I find that people tend to rank it far too highly even just in the Super Nintendo's library. For example, SydLexia's list (http://www.sydlexia.com/snes100/snes05.htm)) says it is the number five best SNES game, when Chrono Trigger, FF4, FF5, DKC2, and Secret of Mana are all better games.

Why do people claim this game is so great? For me it was a fairly basic JRPG on the SNES, although the timed combat button presses and ability to surprise enemies was neat). Even then, Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story have these mechanics and are better games.

Nice art style, music, simple and fun gameplay, FF style quest set with Mario in his world...it's just a really fun game. It's not overrated.

I agree with everything you said. Those pluses, largely present in any good SNES game, do not justify the volume of Top 5 SNES games ratings this game receives nor those claiming it is the best SNES RPG.

>> No.6126935

>>6126921
Well that's were subjectivity comes in. No one's list is truth. Some people just find platformer gameplay boring, so a game like DKC2 will rank lower than an rpg.

Back when this came out people were blown away at how good the game looked. This was just a very technically impressive at the time when the other game consoles at the time relied on add-ons to try to squeeze more power out of their systems, and this ran on a stock SNES. The pre-rendered graphics that late SNES games had were ridiculously slick.

Not to mention the music was catchy, the battle system was intuitive for the time, and the story especially the writing was fun and quirky. But mostly it was the first Mario themed RPG and it was handled with a ton of care and attention to detail.

Yet there are at least 4 SNES RPG's that are better. Thus overrated.

It had an SA1 chip, but I think your point stands about the graphics. It still looks damn good.

Do the other qualities you talk about really justify calling it the best RPG on the system or putting it in the top 5 though?

>> No.6126964

Your first mistake was giving half a shit what any "TOP 5 BEST EVER" list says.
People that don't like RPGs like this game more than people who do, because it addresses "problems" that casuals have with the genre.
>i hate random encounters!
Ok, in this game you can avoid them.
>i hate having to travel around a world map!
Ok, in this game you can just pick where you want to go and there's still lots of secrets to find.
>i hate picking attacks from a menu, there's no skill!
Timed hits trick casuals into thinking they're doing more than they actually are, and they're brief enough that they don't drag things out.
>i hate melodramatic stories and long cutscenes!
The scenes in SMRPG are short and have a lot of good visual humor. You never think too hard and it keeps a light and fun tone.
Then there's all the secrets, side quests, and minigames that give you a ton of non-combat things to enjoy, too.

I dont know if he is, honestly. While I do think it's a fantastic game, would I rank it in my top 5? Or even top 10? Maybe not, but back when it first came out I sure would've.
Top 5 or 10 JRPGs would be a pretty easy fit though, especially if you're only taking games that came out in NA into consideration. At that point you're comparing it to FF4 and 6, Chrono Trigger, uhhh, Earthbound I guess. Secret of Mana, Illusion of Gaia... It can hang pretty well with those.

Yeah, but at the same time I think anyone who prefers those games would still be valid. The thing about JRPGs, at least to me, is that they cover such a huge spread of what goes into a game that it's harder for me to put my foot down and say "game x is 100% better than game y and anyone who disagrees is an idiot." That's not even getting into "it's crap but I still love it" type territory.

>Secret of Mana
Secret of Mana is straight up not even a good game. It has one strength; the aesthetics. Its really colorful and nice looking and has great music. The actual gameplay is a god awful mess of terrible hit detection, AI getting stuck behind corners, and waiting for gauges to fill up. Plus, the story is nearly incoherent.
Mario RPG has about equally good aesthetics (in a different way), but with actually really fun gameplay. The story is basic but it's one of the very few video games in the history of games to actually succeed at being funny.

>> No.6127056,1 [INTERNAL]

the only reasons this is overly praised is for some simple reasons.
.- Mario
.- Square
.- 3d prerenderd graphics
besides those nothing else is truth that it use a custom chip the SA-1 but compared to other games it didn't catch that much,it sold less units then other games for example the onyl reason i played the game was because was bundled with my snes mini but comparing this to other rpg this fall short.
Most of the hype was because of those reasons i mentioned above while is good is not as good as dragon ques, final fantasy, ilusion of gaia, terranigma, secret of mana, earthbound, legend of zelda.
If we take into account games released in japan only this game fall really behind compared to Seiken Densetsu III,Shin Megami Tensei 2,Wonder Project J,Treasure Hunter G,Tengai Makyo Zero,Star Ocean,Romancing Saga,Popful Mail,Majin Tensei,Mahoujin Guru Guru,Lodoss tou senki,Front Mission,Dragon Ball Z gokuuden,Cyber Knight,Sailor Moon Another Story,Arabian Nights i could keep on and on mentioning better titles but those are the ones that came to my mind which are sometimes better then super mario rpg.

>Why do people claim this game is so great?
Fun and touching story
Outstanding graphics
Excellent musical scores
Great, charismatic characters- in fact this is the game where Bowser was upgraded from your generic evil overlord into a likeable antagonist with a charismatic personality and an unexpected soft spot for his minions
Innovative game mechanics- this was the game where an active combat input was introduced as a staple feature of Mario's rpg games to keep grinding from becoming too tedious

The game has certainlly aged, and some aspects/mechanics look dated, but it's still an excellent game worth playing.

I'm playing through SNES games I never played before.
Recently beat Mario RPG and can easily say it's a 4.5/5. It was a bit on the easier side which is the only negative I can think of.
The music, graphics, battle system were great for the snes and it's one of the few games to honestly make me laugh out loud.

I've always thought that if a game gets to be overrated, it must have a good reason for that.
SMRPG may be a babbies first RPG, but it's THE best babbies first RPG around and it's not an easy thing to achieve without screwing up some parts.
I personally think the game has the praise it deserves.
But I'm sure I'm being biased because it's my favorite game of all time.

It's an introduction to RPGs that prioritizes form and not function. This was the second RPG I ever played when I was a kid, and those years ago it was actually challenging. As a child, I felt the tension of the open fields, and felt "safe" in the towns. I just wanted to run around and talk to all the people.

This sort of game doesn't work quite as well for adults. It's a lot of fun, and I still enjoy it, but I can't really get into an imaginary world the same way I could as a kid. A lot of what remains fun as an adult is the more complex gameplay, which Mario RPG simply doesn't have.

Anyhow OP, Mario RPG is a masterpiece, and you've simply gown up. You don't have an imagination or child-like wonder any longer.

Did you play it when it came out or just recently? For its time it was a pretty revolutionary departure for Mario and Nintendo combining with Squaresoft was like a dreamteam you won't see again. The game itself is solid and has lots of depth, secrets, and variety, not just in new areas to explore, but the minigames too. It deserves a spot as one of the best RPGs on the SNES.

The game has a great variety in it's levels that keeps the experience fresh the whole way through.
The minigames are an immediate example of this, but each town has a unique design to it and unique problems to deal with, the enemy designs vary from classic mario characters reimagined in the new artstyle, to wildly different looking original creations.

If you take each part of the game as it comes it's a great, well paced game that keeps you interested the whole way through. But if you skim past towns and avoid minigames, the dungeons combat will be the only real thing you're playing, and you'll have to grind more to make up for not having better equipment and more money. In that case the game will definitely feel like a boring grindfest
