I like the 3rd one the best I think. Probably because I played it the most growing up. I also really enjoy doing speedruns of THPS1 since the game can easily be 100% completed in less than 20 minutes. Tony hawk 2 annoys me because collecting all the cash can be frustrating. Tony hawk 4 is pretty fun but not as good as the games before it or the game after it. Underground is perfect. American wasteland is a blast. Underground 2 pisses me off because it feels more like a jackass game than tony hawk, still great tho. Project 8 was the last playable one in my opinion. I did not like proving ground when it came out and tony hawk ride made me cry. This is a pic of some of my tony hawk games, I have more for playstations and Xbox. Honestly my favorite game series.

>> No.6123830

>>6123806
Tony hawk 3 was still in the classic tony hawk style of gameplay and it pretty much perfected the style for the the 6th gen of gaming, it has a nice range of great levels and the best secret characters of any of the games. Tony hawk 4 was the transition to the underground games, as it introduced the free roaming instead of the classic 2 minute timed runs, they didnt perfect this new style of game until underground. 4 definitely feels more like a transition imho.

>> No.6123837

>>6123106
Yeah It's not as good as the six gen versions obviously, but still a great example of a classic tony hawk game. And the book end to the N64 library of games in the US. Really pushed the n64 to its limits.

>> No.6123845

>>6123830
Nah, I don't agree. 3 has the same goal structure as 1 and 2, but the actual gameplay is what I consider transitional. It introduced the revert and put a greater emphasis on flatland tricks, both of which were improved and expanded upon with later titles. 4 to me perfected the standard THPS gameplay without adding the off-the-board gimmicks of Underground and later.

>> No.6123907

I loved playing these multiplayer. Horse and the score attack things were tons of fun. I wasn't really a fan of when they allowed you to keep your combo going anywhere with that wheelie thing though.
I would love some sort of remake that included everything from the first three or four games and tons of options to customize things to your liking. Even if it was possible for them to get all the licenses and everything. I'm sure they would totally mess it up somehow though.

Seeing this thread has renewed my interest in picking up the PSP remake since it's quite cheap

I bought the PSP version after a classmate refused to return my PS2 copy. It’s pretty good.

Improvements
>New stages

Compromises
>It has an annoying habit of restarting songs when you go to a new menu screen
>worse textures (of course)
>music doesn’t change on things like the Star Wars kid easter egg
>secret characters like Shrek doesn’t have special boards, just regular ones (I also think their graffiti graphics are changed to generic stuff)

I stopped at 3, but they were all great to the point I had forgotten to sleep and played them through all-nighters. Seems like 4, UG, UG2 has a lot of love on this thread, and maybe one day I'll give them a try. It is one of my most favorite sports game series.

In my opinion the original Underground was the best one. Underground 2's story mode was too Jackass-y for my tastes but it's still a good game. American Wasteland is pretty good as well, even if adding BMX was kind of useless.

2 was great, but 3 was better. Without reverts you simply couldn't make insane combos like you could in latter games, you had to rely a lot more on grinding.

I was with it from 2 (N64 and GBA) all the way to American Wasteland. Then Project 8 happened, I rented the PS2 version and was not really impressed, and while sure I played the shitty version of it, playing Proving Grounds just said to me that the series was burnt out at that point. Would I want a good classic THPS game? Sure, I don't even need walking or the super crazy shit of later games. But the Activision of today is basically the real Satan incarnate and Hawk's career is retired now while skating is basically dead, so fat chance of that.

Play fucking thugpro. Thug2 Mod with a shit ton of levels ported in, glitch tech from previous games ported in, older trick animations ported in, custom soundtracks, custom levels, I really don’t know why there’s no mention of it in this thread. There’s a decent sized community around still but I would love more people from the Chan’s to play with. The skill cieling on this series is insane once you go beyond just 50-50ing to kickflipping over and over, it’s the only game I play anymore. Also thug1 was the best mechanically, thaw is my personal favorite but shit like wallplant cooldown and lack of offboard drift control really destroyed high level play. Please play thugpro.

L1 & R1 = one of them changed your footing from what i remember and in THUG onward pressing both got you on & off your board while pressing one of them off your board rotated the camera.

it's been a lifetime since i played tony hawk games on a playstation.

the underground games are pretty much where the franchise peaked.

THAW was okay but you can tell that they ran out of ideas on where to go with the series.

proving grounds was fairly decent as the last tony hawk game by neversoft but they pretty much gutted most of the features (story & multiplayer are the only modes) tried to be like skate.

THPSHD was a step in the right direction after the board games but it was pretty barebones and there was no create a character.

That’s a semi big question as the community is somewhat segregated by interest. Your average lobby full of entry level/casual players though is usually going to be a thug1 manhattan lobby cycling through trick attack, free skate, graffiti, koth, and sometimes weirder stuff like firefight or scavenger hunt. There’s also an underrated appeal in just chilling in a free skate lobby and chatting about bullshit and hanging out, so you’ll see that between games a fair bit. Most in these sorts of entry level/beginner lobbies play for score but usually the best player can’t get beyond something like 10 million points. You’ll see a lot of 50-50 to impossible spammed over and over skating predictable level lines and speed manuals used again and again and needless to say it can pretty tiresome to watch post zero if someone is doing that for several minutes. On the other hand though with the game type variety and amount of levels thugpro offers (not to mention the augmented create-park functionalities) means that these lobbies can be a hell of a lot of fun to play in.

Most of the high level players that have been playing since the release of the online titles totally eschew score as it has become a sort of outmoded and mindnumbing to pursue. Dedicated players playing purely for score (known as whoring) are so good at holding combos that a single combo will often go for over 15+ minutes, clear out the rest of the lobby because it’s so boring to spectate, and the score has to be calculated externally as the point engine wraps into negatives after a certain number, as I recall around 2 billion something. It’s a bit of a dying art and the few keeping it alive are mostly polish/Russian. Here’s a random example: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6A2kwAAhrrQ

Pt.2
Most advanced players play in a style called improv which is basically just playing for style to look cool and trying to play in as non-linear a fashion as possible. There’s an obscene amount of difficult and stylish glitch tech you can pull off in the thps engine that the base game has no way to objectively measure in terms of a point value (spinouts, buttslaps, wallride bounces, teleporting in combo, getting huge glitch air off walls, midair manuals, etc). It’s pretty autistic but it’s also a lot of fun, and I suppose more in the ethos of actual skateboarding rather than chasing arbitrary point values. Most into this aspect of the game spend their time making videos or doing transfers as the skill ceiling is basically endless. I’ve found it to be more rewarding a pursuit than any other game I’ve played. Here’s an example of somebody that’s highly recognized as a thps god that I really love to watch play.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BFKqvmFfj_I&t=621s

There are lots of other good videos on that channel but some are better than others.

There’s also a good number of modders, mappers, and custom park creators in the community creating content for the games that keeps things fresh between major mod updates which seems to be around once to twice a year these days.

Sorry for the text dump, I just like to be comprehensive since it’s something i’m very passionate about. There’s a few other disparate tribes but those are the main ones. Please let me know if you have any questions.

looks like this is the current standing DHJ record (1279 million), and from what it looks like in the video description it was a pretty nightmarish level to run. It's not all that commonly played a level in the modern online scene. Players that play for score will play pretty much any level though, i believe the goal is to get into the billions on every available stage but of course that comes easier to some maps than others. Either way you're not gonna see this playstyle all too often online because most lobby hosts would just straight up boot someone from the room not wanting to observe someone robot lining for 15 minutes at a time for each game.

It's all legit, He's just utilizing very precise and technical know-how when it comes to how the thps series handles momentum and speed. If you check his flat-to-flat ollies you can see it's normal height, no moon grav involved. Also stats aren't really a factor, they're all automatically set to 10 out of 10 when playing online.
