Yeah, Cloud is fucking terrible. It is hard to imagine a more bland and uninspiring lead character. When you think of Cloud, you think of the Buster Sword rather than his nonexistant personality. Cid, Barrett, or Tifa should have been the lead of FF7, but the japs had to give us an angsty faggot with a big sword. His connection to Sephiroth is so forced. I love FF7, but I give Cloud a 2/10.

I'd say Eiko's pretty alright as far as children characters go but even then that's still a pretty impressive chunk of the overall cast. Even Freya despite losing significance still holds up well in the time she did. So that just leaves Amarant, who's shit and Quina who's weird but mostly harmless.

This is pretty good when you look back at how bad the cast of 8 went personality wise. There's no "I LIKE TRAINS" here.

Eiko was a lonely girl who never made human connections beyond her crush on Zidanne and her almost sisterly bond with Garnet. She also fills us in on A LOT of lore about the summoners and Garnet's past. She fits her role as a supporting character quite admirably. Selphie doesn't do shit the whole game.

Cloud personality was about trying to be Zack(a Shonen protagonist) but failing because after all his failure and bullying in life, his personality was more cynic(you can see this in all dialogue in the game , which he roast other people).
Also, all the development of him was to not being depressed and obsessed and confront his fear. That's why the moment when Tifa and him see their past are important, and that's why the battle against sephiroth in his mind is very important:
Because that Sephiroth was Jenova trying to control Cloud like he was controlling Sephiroth in the game, but he fails because Jenova lure broken people(Sephiroth have his trauma of wanting to have a mother, Cloud the trauma of failing to be a SOLDIER). That's why that battle is important and show that he isn't an emo without charisma,
Is not a great character or character arc, but is funny how people want/try to understand Cloud so different to the original game.

Zell *finally* got to be in charge during the group split to outer space in Disc 3, no idea how Squall decided to let that one happen but Zell didn't completely fuck things up at that point. As for Irvine, I don't even remember him doing much of anything outside of the disc 2 prison phase.
