Sega could have not designed a worse set of levels for a Sonic game than Marble Zone even if they were trying on purpose. How do you finish Green Hill Zone and then fundamentally forget what your game is? Jesus christ.

While the first sonic game is my favorite, I just can't stand marble zone, not once have I enjoyed it. the platforms are too small, due to Sonic's ice like walking physics and the fact that there is lava everywhere, you die a lot

Marble zone isn't terrible, I don't like it but after many playthroughs I just remember every step.
Spring Yard Zone just isn't fucking fun, it's a fucking pain in the ass of a level.

Marble Zone is why I barely ever played Sonic even early on and despite getting it as a pack in and only having two other games. Though I'm not a fan of platformers from the get go, Green Hill Zone has some fun bits to it. Marble Zone though was always just a slog and the few times I beat it I was so bored with the game I'd just turn it off after my first death in Springyard.

It's very linear (beyond some simple "let's cut out all of this level" shortcuts), blocky, and except for a few jumps, ignores the fact that Sonic has momentum. There's a few bits where you can run full tilt (finding out that you don't need to wait on the slow lava block section in act 1 and 2 was great), but it's just more annoying than fun.

I'd say Sonic's movement is precise enough for having precision sections of level like in Marble, although you do need to do some counter-inputs to not fall off.
It's not really slippery, but I guess it's more that Sonic just keeps moving. He stops easily at low or medium speed, but you need to stop him, he coasts along on momentum otherwise.

Act 1 of Green Hill Zone can be beaten without ever stopping pressing right, but even Act 2 stops that with the spike traps. The entire premise of Sonic in the original document revolves around the speed of the character, which doesn't mean the game needs to constantly wrest control from the player in a tube sequence, but something in the middle that combines platforming, fast sections, and very fast segments that reward careful timing or fast reflexes.

Marble Zone's music is the saving grace.

Underaged zoomer detected. The developers actually did purposefully make Marble Zone much less exciting than Green Hill Zone because they at the time had created the worlds first speed based platformer and thought that kids would get burned out if every level was similar to GHZ. It looks foolish only now but I would say they played it safe by doing this. Child me didn't care because I liked Sonic anyways. Marble Zone is right along the lines of most platformers of the day. These days though sure, this zone should have been way better. Hindsight is 2020 fucker but Sonic Team gets and deserves a pass for Sonic 1's level design.

I disagree. People often complain about the "waiting elevator blocks" in Spring Yard but Casino pulls off much more than that. Waiting blocks, cutscene elevators (Sonic 3 also did this on carnival zone), and overal Casino is full of bumpers and not really that much space to actually use Sonic's momentum.
Spring Yard is a pinball-themed stage but doesn't go full retard about it, and has plenty of tight platforming moments. Casino is still very memorable but kind of a clusterfuck in its design, and Carnival Night was even worse.
Spring Yard is just great.

Casino Night doesn't ever really feel like you're just waiting around. Really, it ends up feeling like playing pinball.
There's spots where yeah, you're not actually doing anything, but Spring Yard ends up leaving the player with much more of a feeling that you should be going faster.
