I'm trying to make a list of the 50 definitive pre-2000 / retro games that are generally accepted as either "must play" or "most important" to gaming. Things the game journos might have a hard-on for. I made a list of what came to mind, but could use suggestions and some help culling the list down to 50.

I do understand a number of these games have either sequels that are better, or similar but more obscure titles that are also better. I'm not looking to necessarily include those. I'm looking mostly for what defines that era.

I'm hoping to play them all and give an honest review of each is why I'm asking.

Super Metroid and Metal Gear Solid are good video games but not in the same top tier as Ocarina of Time. Not the best video games of all time. Just good games, in the top 500 but not 50. Easy way to spot a pleb.

I've played 32 of them. I want to get back into writing. The goal is to review all 50 of them in the context that they came out in 2020. Do they still hold up. It's something fun and different I'd like to try.

I'm not trying to make a definitive list of what the best games are here. That's not the objective. The objective is to give a fair critique of what are "generally considered" the Top 50 Retro games.

Yes I do understand game journos have masturbatorial tendencies reviewing what they think are "the greats". That's part of what I'm writing for. To give an assessment of what's actually good vs overrated nonsense.

Step back and really consider if ANY Pokemon game deserves a spot. Were any of them considered essential beyond the narrow scope of the fanbase? There are Star Wars games non fans can enjoy. I don't know if the same applies to pokemon. If you want to go there, cool. Just something to think about.

Pokemon Red/Blue is the single most deserving JRPG of a spot. Every normalfag has heard of Pokemon. Only FFVII comes close in cultural impact. Dragon Quest also qualifies by its influence on game mechanics and its cultural importance in Japan. No other JRPGs qualify.

>> No.6120063

"Must-play" and "most important" aren't the same, which is why you need to divide the list into two segments.
For example, when it comes to 2D platformers, not a single one can compare to the importance of SMB1, but there are definitely retro platformers which are must-play because of how often they are discussed. For example, at least SMB3, SMW and DKC1 need to be on that list.

>>6119354
As for the list, I really dont see need for redundancy, if you have SM 64 in the list, you dont need to do other 3D platformers, same goes for the multiple JRPG games. Only one o the 2D Mario games would also be enough, I would go with the SMB. Theres also a lack of sports games, Wave Race 64 and ISSS 2000 certainly deserve a spot.

Galaga is just an incremental improvement over Space Invaders. Xevious is more deserving of the place. First notable vertical scrolling shmup, and a huge commercial success. F-Zero X is a much better game than Wipeout, but Wipeout is the more important one. What other racing game was cool enough to be first revealed in a movie? What other racing game licensed music from big name dance acts? Wipeout sold Playstations, and F-Zero X was largely forgotten.
