Either Ocarina of Time or ALttP. It's hard for me to really choose, since both offer quite a few different things. I like OoT more for its characters, story, art direction and the aesthetic and atmosphere of the world and dungeons, but ALttP is much more engaging in its gameplay, it has a denser world to see, is generally tougher and is much better on replays than OoT is.

Though, to be honest, you play Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, and that's all you need to truly experience everything 3D zelda has to offer, the 2D games have a lot more worth experiencing. Zelda 1 and A Link to the Past are absolute classics, Zelda 2 is good, Link's Awakening is great and so is A Link Between Worlds, even Oracles of Seasons, Oracle of Ages and Four Swords Adventures aren't half bad.

Nah, that's false. If you want to talk about other 3D Zeldas even though we are on /vr/ then WW, TP and BoTW are absolutely worth playing. Especially BoTW if you prefer Zelda 1 to ALttP like me.
But I prefer 2D Zelda as well, yeah and agree with everything else except for

Wind Waker is too much of an unfinished mess with a bad gimmick and awful level design for me to feel like it's really worth playing, meanwhile Twilight Princess is just fairly dull in its gameplay and its story was trying too hard to ape the scope of Ocarina and failing to capture Majora's Mask's surreal and darker tone.

I enjoy the fuck out of ALBW and I enjoyed it the most of the post-N64 Zeldas, but I also feel like so much of its quality just has to do with concepts and design work it lifted directly from ALttP. While I did enjoy the story, a lot of the new ideas like item renting or the complete lack of linear progression hurt it in places. I feel like it's somewhat difficult to judge the game in an honest manner.

Personally I like WW and TP a lot. I like them way more than MM but everyone has different tastes I guess. As for ALBW, once again, as a fan of Zelda 1 I enjoyed the non linearity. It lifts a lot from ALttP, that's for sure but I don't think that it hurts the game in the slightest since ALBW itself is basically a love letter for people who love ALttP

It's not so much the lack of linearity that hurts albw, it's the lack of significant difficulty increase in both combat in puzzles, the game is designed around every lorule dungeon (except the sand one, iirc) potentially being the first you explore, as well as items necessary to beat a dungeon are usually just a single rental item. The game could have gotten way harder and a lot more complex if it was designed around more linear progression.

This is the one that really hurts it to me. You make a system that involves the player getting all their tools at the start of the game, and effectively can do whatever they want with them, and you STILL make the same boring "one item per situation" puzzles that people don't like about the series.

Also, the idea of Zelda being a ghost following Link around was actually done first in the LoZ cartoon series, in one of the episodes Zelda turns into a ghost and the situation is pretty similar to ST.
