6110319 No.6110319 [Reply] [Original]

the advent of 3D deprived us of reaching the true greatness of 2D gaming. As things were getting epic (think Final Fantasy VI, Super Metroid, Sonic 3 & Knuckles...), 3D came and put everything into a halt. I think 2D gaming never reached it's true maturity, not even with the 32bit titles. The 8 and 16 bit gens were gone too fast, meanwhile each 3D machine dragged for too damned long. I wonder what we could've had if 32/64 bit consoles (& 3D arcades) never entered the battlefield during the 90s. Maybe in an alternate universe gaming reached its own identity instead of aping cinema.

2d shit is being made today that easily surpasses retro 2d. Clearly you're aware of this as you posted one of the games yourself.

>> No.6110326

People who were making 2D games didn't want to be making 2D games, except for a small minority, everyone, including developers. was left wanting for more. 3D was always going to be the future.

>>6110325
the point is that we don't know how much better things would've gotten with 2D AAA releases, instead of relying on one-man efforts (cave story) and small indie devs with little experience. I'm just saying IMAGINE an alternate universe Squaresoft putting 300 workers and massive budget behind a 2D JRPG in 1999 or so. Or new genres being born out of going beyond limitations.

Considering these small indie studios are matching the AA/AAA 2D of the past, I'm content with that. Want to see what AAA 2D would look like? Go play Octopath Traveler and tell me that actually looks good.

>>6110329
There's only so much better 2D sprite art can get before it becomes redundant and not worth the effort. At a certain point they stop being sprites altogether.

2D peaked with SNK and Capcom. Games like Metal Slug, KoF, SFIII, never got beat.

We had many years of GBA and DS yet there wasn't much improvement on 32 bit 2D games, if at all.

It looks pretty good, but Octopath is purposely trying to evoke a "16bit" look, even though the sprites are much higher resolution than Final Fantasy 6. It isn't trying to be highly detailed.

Unfortunately, even though pixel based 2d graphics look way better than polygon graphics, the fact that most consumers can't appreciate the artistry and the fact that they are actually harder to make means they'll only ever be an indie thing. Which is fine except I fucking hate metroidvania games.

>> No.6111397

>>6110319
The problem is, that 2D sprite art that you're so nostalgic about? It only has that look and feel when it's made in low res.

When developers try making the same thing in HD people whine and complain that it looks like a flash game.

>> No.6111404

>>6111397
The "flash game" look complaint is entirely legitimate. It has to do with "HD" sprites that have the exact same level of detail as SD sprites, and thus look lazy, combined with poor animation techniques. Even games that look great in stills (Odin Sphere) are revealed as looking awful in motion because the animation is garbage compared to traditional sprite frame animation.

Here's the thing though. Detail doesn't make things look "better". It doesn't make it look worse either. It is an artistic choice. People have known this in art for thousands of years.

I hate backtracking in a sidescroller. I feel the RPG leveling systems are a replacement for actual game design. I like platformers where every jump matters and enemy placement is designed around level layout.

I don't mind the occasional straight up metroid style game without rpg stuff, though.

>Final Fantasy VI
It looked alright, but didn't need to be 2D at all. If it looked like that one N64 tech demo it would be cool as fuck.
>Super Metroid
You would have a point if there weren't so fucking much new Metroidvania releases all the time. Fuck them and fuck roguelikes.
>Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Isn't even that good of a game, GBA Sonic titles were better.
Either way, you are retarded. 2D basically peaked in presentation soon after 16-bit era. After that it's all about of how much more animation could be packed in game. And stylized 3D could look as good as 2D even then, while a shitton of 2D is lazy shit to this day. Same thing applies to cartoon visuals by the way.

Low Poly 3D and pre-rendered sprites is also good and a decent middle ground, which Sonic Mania unironically uses since since OP likes to be stupid

Modern AAA, sure. If you're including AA and indie in that, you're just being a contrarian nigger.

Not unless you're comparing the worst indie pixelshit to the best 2d titles we grew up with. Underrail, Dead Cells, Blasphemous, and Darkwood are a few recent examples of indie pixel-art games that are all aesthetically excellent.
