I love story driven RPGs but don't like grinding or random battles. I'm willing to use cheats to minimize this issue if needed. What are the best retro RPGs to play with that in mind?

Chrono Trigger is my favorite RPG. I've struggled with Phantasy Star 4 and Lunar: Silver Star Story in trying to get into some classics. Skies of Arcadia was interesting, but I hated the random battles and lost my copy. I really want to get through them, but it's just such a slow start.

Thoughts?

This might sound weird but FFVIII. If you know what you're doing you can get the no encounters ability in disc one and then plow through the game with zero random battles in the last 3/4.

The enemies scale with your level anyway so grinding was pointless to begin with. Play cards instead of grinding and use card mod and draw points to make a juggernaut team even at relatively low levels. Much more fun than a traditional playthrough, I wish other FF games gave you the option.

Lunar Silver Star Story Complete doesn't have random encounters though - the enemies are on the map like in Chrono Trigger.
Anyway maybe give Panzer Dragoon Saga a shot.

Planescape: Torment. Max out wisdom and intelligence in chargen and it's practically a visual novel.

These threads always crack me up. People so intent on finding a JRPG that checks all these particular boxes, but absolutely not one or two other aspects that are in every JRPG.

It's like saying "I love sucking off other men, but don't like how gay it is." If you want the stories you have to do the battles, too. That's just how the genre is.

Depending on how old school you want to go and just what constitutes an RPG (does it need to be party based menu driven combat?) then I'll give you the hail mary suggestion of Quest for Glory. What "grinding" there is is pretty light (especially by JRPG standards) and generally pretty enjoyable; if you go in blind without a guide or anything then you will probably inadvertently do it without even realizing just by figuring things out for yourself.

Honestly, I think you need to figure out what you really want and ask that, as just saying RPG is a bit too broad to be useful here.

Albion. All the battles are fixed and the game is easy enough that you don't have to grind.

FFVIII is story driven and has an ability that disables random encounters (Diablo's Enc-None), although you can't get it at the beginning of the game. Grinding for XP is useless and there's little need to grind for AP, but you will still have to draw magic from enemies (or, alternatively, refine it from items that can be bought, stolen, refined from cards or obtained by killing some monsters).

Super Mario RPG is basically made as an RPG for people who arent fans of the genre but want to be. No random battles, you should never need to grind, fun charming little story.

Kinda shocked Im the first to mention it honestly.

Yes.

Also, Fallout 1&2. There are random encounters where raiders or angry critters attack you when you're traveling around on the world map, but you can always just run away from them if you're not in the mood, or if you're playing a non-combat-oriented character.

Final Fantasy Tactics and 6 are good bets for you. If you can, you can beat both games without training too much (maybe outside once or twice in FFT).

Valkyrie profile too, but you'd have to use a guide to do the best ending.
