What went so right? No one in the "dream team" came close to approaching its perfection by themselves. Who was it that brought it all together?

>> No.6107581

Square had he skill and experience, the "bones", whereas Horii and Toriyama knew how to make a good jrpg presentation or skin, the "soul". Sakaguchi brought the drama, and Horii the comedy.

I think that, in the end, it was a good mix that made the game feel more complete. It is said in some interview that Horii knew how to make good dialogues despise the limitations of the medium, and many of the situations in the game were planned by Sakaguchi. So I'll say it was all there, but not always in the same room.

Mitsuda. The music is far and away the best and most memorable part of the game, or at least the part that people think fondly about the most when they're not actively playing the game. They associate it strongly with the art too, but you won't typically see people looking through art books in their spare time while you will see people listen to the music just on its own.

Trigger is a hodgepodge of mediocrity that for some reason has been hyped by autists to high heaven. The music is the only good part, and that's just leftover tracks from SoM development.

Toriyama actually doesn't have a sameface problem per se. As you can see here he has a wide range of brow shapes, eye shapes, irises, noses, etc. If you Google "anime sameface" you will realize that he is actually WAY better in this regard than many artists.

If anything he has a samehair problem, with the males/shounen all having that kind of hair Goku/Super Saiyans have. Though this is a product of the demographic that buys/bought/watched this kind of show/game and is not unique to Toriyama (see Cloud). I would mention that many have black hair as well, but then Dragon Ball is supposed to take place in "sort of" Asia so this is understandable.

But really it's moreso that Toriyama just has a very distinct overall style, not just with his faces but his shading, lines, and other conventions. And again, this is something many artists, even fairly good ones, will never achieve and would give their left nut to do so.

It's the proto ps4 movie game ala the last of us. Straight forward but novel character driven story, very very strong plotting. Extremely brisk pacing to facilitate the plotting and story. Very low difficulty to facilitate the pace. An emphasis on spectacle and set pieces instead of depth of mechanics. All this allows the developers to imprint a very specific and intentional experience on the player, and for it to be uniform across every player. The design ideology is very far ahead of its time, all things considered. Personally I do not enjoy this style of design, and wouldn't recommend the game on its merits of gameplay at all, but for the theme park like experience which does have some value and it quite entertaining on your first playthrough. I would not recommend it to someone to "initiate" them on jrpgs as it is in many ways the anti-jrpg.

I don’t know why people always tout the random battles thing. Sure, there are a decent number of monsters where you can hug the wall to avoid them, but for the most part the game still railroads you into most of the encounters it wants you to have. So they’re not random battles so much as they are “scheduled” battles, like in FF13 or something.

Chrono Trigger is very efficient. If you try and examine its setting beyond what's required for plot and themes, you'll find basically nothing. Though this also means its sense of flow tends to be great, excepting getting red rock to fix the Masamune. There's also a lot of creativity to its components, in effect, it's got a lot of spectacle even if it's only skin deep.

A contratian /vr/ poster and video game design professor was teaching a class on Hiromichi Tanaka, known ruiner of franchises.
”Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship Tanaka and accept that he was the greatest Square employee ever, even greater than Sakaguchi!"
At this moment, a brave, patrician, pro-Trigger anon who had gotten every ending on the original hardware and understood the necessity of a limited character roster stood up and held up his hand.
”What if one prefered Trigger to Cross, pinhead?”
The arrogant professor smirked and smugly replied “then they're a pleb who got filtered."
”Wrong. It's been 20 years since Cross came out. If Trigger were for plebs as you say… then there should have been far more Cross threads than Trigger threads by now."
The professor was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and copy of the Chrono Cross Official Strategy Guide. He stormed out of the room crying those contrarian crocodile tears. The same tears contrarianss cry for the "SaGa" series when people still like FF better. There is no doubt that at this point our professor, Anon Anonington, wished he had pulled himself up by his bootstraps and become more than /vr/ dweller. He wished he had a good battle theme to encourage him, but he himself knew that Cross's battle theme was annoying and he tired of it years ago!
The students applauded and all started a playthrough of Trigger that day and accepted Toriyama's art as genius. An eagle named “Frog's Theme” flew into the room and perched atop the Rainbow Shell and shed a tear on the chalk. Belthazar's Mystery of Life was read several times, and Mitsuda himself showed up and composed a song to mark the occasion.
The professor lost his tenure and was fired the next day. He was banished to /v/ and condemned to waifu-posting for all eternity.
His HP/MP was restored, but he was still hungry.
