I have been thinking about replaying Mario RPG, and while I remember a lot of the characters and pantomime skits the game has, I really don't remember much of the gameplay itself.
So what are you favorite aspects of Super Mario RPG? Favorite enemies, bosses, levels, etc.

You can play him in Legacy XP. He's pretty damn fun, and the designers even added a mechanic for him that mimics the "timed-hit" damage bonus from SMRPG. And his character uses all the original sound effects from the game.

Bowser's original victory pose, changed for overseas because it's apparently an offensive gesture in select countries. Not the US though, making this a rare instance of an "obscene" thing being changed for someone other than us.

That doesn't make any sense and whatever source you're quoting is stupid. It means "up yours," even in America, and is a close cousin to flipping the bird. Why would they change the NTSC-U version of a game for what would only be offensive to a PAL region? That's dumb.

>> No.6107740

>>6107719
Probably because NTSC is also a South American thing in places, where the gesture is also offensive.

This was the game that taught me what RPGs were. I had no idea and rented it just because it was Mario, and I quickly got confused as fuck about why I was picking my attacks from a menu instead of just jumping on shit like a normal Mario game.

I didn't try it again until over a decade later when it was on the Wii virtual console. I enjoyed it a lot, by then. Recently did a marathon playthrough with a friend where we took turns, it was pretty comfy. I liked the tone and aesthetic of the world. Mixing Mario with some standard fantasy elements gave us a Mushroom Kingdom that feels so much more alive than the homogenized version we've had set in stone for the past 15+ years. I love the Link/Samus cameos and the general fun of the dialogue.

Game has some annoying/tedious parts, mostly because the battles are so easy and certain areas throw a lot of mandatory encounters at you. Worst part of the game is the mini-game cavalcade in Bowser's castle, since trivia is lame and isometric platforming is bullshit. That whole segment really kills the fucking pace of what should be the most high-energy part of the game.

>>6106934
I loved learning this, pretty cool feature.

>>6107682
>Not the US though
Pretty sure that IS an obscene gesture in the US, even without the middle finger extended.

>> No.6108587

>>6108457
People will probably assume you’re trying to insult them somehow, but be fairly confused. Most people just wouldn’t like being gestured at in general, but this specific one wouldn’t natively have any connotations, though they may have some idea of its implication in other cultures.

It’d be like if you started chanting “Bollocks!” in the US. People would for the most part understand you’re trying to curse, but it’d have this fish-out-of-water flavor to it.

>>6108587
>People will probably assume you’re trying to insult them somehow, but be fairly confused
Nah, it was a pretty common gesture in most parts of the US, up through the '90s. Generally, it meant "up yours" as opposed to the middle finger's "fuck you" connotation. It was a more mild gesture and was used in movies or tv shows where a middle finger wouldn't have flown. I definitely got in trouble for doing it at school, though. It kinda fell out of use after the turn of the century, so I guess maybe that's why zoomers aren't familiar with it.

>> No.6108645

>>6108632
This. My dad always called it "the Itaian salute". It was pretty popular in New York with all the immigrants, and you'd see it a lot in movies with stereotypical Italian characters. It played second fiddle to the finger in the US, but it was still seen as being pretty offensive.

There is no "agree to disagree" on a fucking fact, you retard. Just because you're not old enough or cultured enough to be aware about something doesn't mean you're still right. The gesture originated in Europe, but is well known in America, thanks to immigration. It was Nintendo of America that made the fucking choice to remove it, so clearly it meant something to someone here. Sorry that it ruins your "unique" piece of bullshit trivia, but I guess you'll have to talk about something else on your next shitty wannabe retro game podcast.

Weren’t you arguing to him that it’s the immigrants’ influence that made it a thing here? Isn’t that like saying they changed the gestures for people from countries other than the United States? That’s not exactly mutually exclusive with what he was saying. In any case you both are going on anecdotal evidence at best so it’s kind of a silly discussion.

Isn't the Square giant sprite boss thing mostly notable because of the human characters though? The monsters being giant never looked out of place for me, just the humans, and Valentina is the closest to a human character you fight in that game (not counting your party clones), so maybe they did it like that on purpose to reference that, or just >>6111256
