I wonder if Barret was part of the reason why FF7 did so well in the States. I think Sahz is the only other black character in a Final Fantasy game in 13, and I distinctly remember the chaos the fact FF13 would be on the 360 caused. Since the 360 was mostly relevant in the states, I feel like Sahz was also added to appeal to American gamers.

Barret actually is a bad character to give the Steal Materia too, as its success rate is tied to Agility. Tifa at that point in the game has the highest available (and Barret isn't in the party at the time you first get Steal anyway).
