Two distinct series in Japan.
Chaotic branding. It's like when the Wario Land series grew as a malignant tumor from Mario Land 3 and became its own thing, except that here, due to the Master System's failure, some games never released in Japan initially the way they were supposed to be.

I'm a pretty big fan of most of the WonderBoy games, a few of them I really hnnnng over. (the ones with the shops, upgrades, cocktails... you know.) MWIV tho, is easily one of the worst games imo. It just feels like they tried to get it right in the middle of the platform/arcade style and the 'rpg' style WB games and in doing so just missed out in the ways they hit in the previous games.
I was ready to stick up for and love this game when I first found it years back, shit! Some of the reviews of the thing had me dribbling! I mean, I fucking LOVED the earlier Megadrive/Genesis WonderBoy in MW game too but, shit I don't think I even managed to finish it the first three or four times I tried to. Meh. Maybe it's not quite as bad as I remember it, but then again, maybe it is. No, I think it is.

I really love MWIV. Teh gameplay might be a bit clunky and the game doesn't give you that much freedom of exploration, bt i find it really fun and charming.
I don't really get the hate for the ice Pyramid, it's the only dungeon that feels like an ACTUAL dungeon, with lots of exploration and even a map, all of the others feel like an obstacle course.
And for that matter, I don't get why this game is so criticised while The Dragon's Trap gets so much praise, most of the map is literally straight lines with an enemy or a trap here and there, and too much bullshit.

>Also what is the difference between this and Adventure Island series? One seems to be about cave men but the other seems medieval based with monsters.
First there was Wonder Boy, an arcade game developed by Westone and published by Sega, it was a game about a cute little blonde caveman kid. Then Hudson got the rights for releasing it on the NES, they renamed the game to Adventure Island and changed the caveman kid to an ugly guy with a cap.
Then Sega/Westone decided to make a dramatic change to the series, making it more about medieval fantasy, and using seevral different names such as Monster World, Monster Land, Monster Lair or more recently, Monster Boy, but all still part of the Wonder Boy series.
Meanwhile, Hudson kept making Adventure Island games on their own, somewhat retaining the stone age atmosphere, but completely separated from the mainline Wonder Boy games.

>> No.6109115

Wow that's needlessly confusing. So other than 1 game Adventure Island and Wonder boy has no connection to each other?

The main series has a confusing naming system at least! So there's the Wonder Boy series with a whole host of names. They should have a standard naming style like Wonder Boy 1: Monder Land, etc.

I've been reading up and the PC Engine version of Dragon's Trap is unique too? Confusing.

Okay which games are worth playing?

I thought the PCE version of Dragon's Trap, called Dragon's Curse, was just a reskin? They released Dynastic Hero too, which I thought was a reskin of Monster World. Bikkuriman World is Monsterland reskinned. I heard Sega wanted to protect the IP/name, but Westone owned the rights to the content. But then Monster Lair, the sidescrolling shooter was released under that name on PCE, so IDK really.

IMO all worth playing. Very seminal. Monster Lair is worth a look too.

Beat Dynastic Hero recently, I forgot what it did differently to Monster World and the answer is - not a whole lot really. The cd music is really forgettable where as MW had memorable tunes. Gonna say bug armor dude in DH grew on me, I always liked the town of dragons in MW which is replaced with a town of fairies, and the musical references to the final castle being the Dragon's Trap one are lost. Weird redone final boss too, which loses the conveyor belt gimmick entirely. Heck, all the bosses are different. Dat English opening song tho:

There's many series.

1 - Wonder Boy (Westone)
Basic platformer. Only three games. First one, then Monster Land that started its own series, then a final one for Arcades. Got many ports, and a recent PC remake.

2 - Monster World (Westone)
Metroidvania-lite. Four games (Land, Dragon's Trap, Wonder Boy in Monster World, MW IV). Started from Monster Land then became its own thing. Recently, the second game (Dragon's Trap) got a remake, then a decent-ish continuation (MW5) was rebranded thrice, released as Monster Boy.

3 - Adventure Island (Hudson)
Port of the first Wonder Boy, then started its own series. Basic platformer for the most part, but Hudson had a pale imitation of the Monster World formula in two games (IV, Super 2) All are average to good.

4 - Rebanded Monster World Ports (various)
- Hudson: First 3 MW games got ports to the TG-16 and mobile with inconsistent new brands.
- TecToy: First 3 MW games got localized with Monica, a local Brazilian cartoon heroine. Someone did an amazing mod of Dragon's Trap 2017 with new hand-drawn animated sprites based on her.
- Jaleco: First MW game (Land) ported as Sayuki World to the Famicom. Sega didn't appreciate. There's an original second Sayuki World (aka Womp 'Em) but it's a basic platformer.

tl;dr: unoriginal inferior ports, except Sayuki World 2 which is original but average.

>>6109538
It started and sold itself as a sequel of a basic flash shooter AND a CLONE of MW, on a Kickstarter campaign which failed before an editor saved it, then Sega and some MW staff got involved, but the dev team insisted on "The Wizard of Booze" subtitle for the game, before relenting (but you can see in the game the remnants of the original plot)
Too many MW references, and the Sega copyright, to be unrelated. Maybe sega was worried about their brand (i can see why they would be pessimistic, even if it turned out good), or the other two remakes for Monster World 2 AND Wonder Boy complicated the name rights.

>Whomp Em is tied into this?

In a way yeah, Sayuki World 1 is pretty much a reskin of Wonderboy in Monsterworld, then Sayuki got a sequel Sayuki 2 which was then localized into English as Whomp 'em.

So in a weird way Whomp 'em is Wonder Boy in Monster Land II.
All we need to do is port Whomp 'em to the Master System and swap the art with Monster Land artwork and call it Monster Land II and the circle is complete!

Someone did.
It's complicated as fuck because it listed each single game as its own entry.

Not unreasonable, because for some versions the individual version was multiplatform. For example, TecToy's Monica MW3 version was TWO ports on the Master System and the Megadrive.
Some rebrands are outright chaotic. One of the Hudson MW ports kept the original title on the TG16. Another Hudson MW port for cell phones renamed it Super Adventure Island. You can imagine the visual disaster that was that graph.

But yeah, that image needs to be redone.

Wtf are you even on. I only ever saw universal acclaim for it. Criticisms are minor, like weird western animation, inferior graphically to WB3 2017, small text, and some rushed development (ending, glitches) but it has the best gameplay in the series.

Maybe you mean the initial showing as Flying Hamster 2? That did look like a flash game. As for the average commercial performance and why no one talks about it, that's bad marketing. The geniuses at FDG promoted it primarily on ResetEra, which didn't care about it either.

I agree the game is awesome and deserves better. An even more polished sequel for example.

Exactly.

WB: Tom-Tom as a child
Monster Land: Tom-Tom 11 years later
Dragon's Curse: Tom-Tom cursed

Monster Lair, from the first series, introduced Leo and Purapril. The descendants of that Purapril bore her name and ruled as queens in MW3 and MW4.
MW4 has a male hero as well, but he's not playable in the final version. He's the boy from the sky palace who seeks Asha's help exorcising the queen.

Tom-Tom's equipment was used by Shion in MW3, and Shion's sprites were used by Asha in MW4. It's neat how continuous the mythology in this series is.

I do hope they bring back either artists who can replicate the artstyle of MW4, or of the 2017 remake. Monster Boy looks cheap.
