I wouldn't say so. The game balanced is ultimately very fucked. Pic related, IMO, is far better as a strategic experience.

When your "cosmic menace that are so bad you instantly win if you can go to their dimension and defeat them" pose absolutely no threat to a planet with a missile base lobbing your basic bitch nukes; and consequently become less a threat and more an opportunity to nab super-tech, you should realize you have a problem.

I had a lot of fun playing this with the difficulty cranked as Humans. They're not the best early or late game race, so when you don't know the game breaking mechanics it makes the game a lot of fun to battle using ever tool you can muster. So capturing and enslaving other races becomes pivotal in dominating.

I always wanted to see more ship variety. It all seemed like beam ships, missile ships, or tanks. I'd like to see a lot more cantrip style ships using exotic and odd weaponry and defenses.
