What the hell are you talking about? Half-Life is a masterclass in level design and manages to keep things fresh by constantly introducing new elements and reusing old ones in new ways. I dont know the details of the situation, maybe theyre helping publish it, but nobody involved in developing ROTT 2013 is developing Wrath. Wrath is made by a guy named Killpixel with collaboration from various Quake modders/mappers.
Also, one of the main guys (Simon) behind Amid Evil made Return Of The Triad and worked on ROTT 2013.

there isnt meant to be a reward for picking one of five available paths to a goal, its simply down to how you built your character.
door may be too hard to lockpick, but with higher hacking skill you may unlock it from a nearby room. but if you built your char as a shoot-first-ask-later type guy, you may have to run around some back alleys and look for vents to get into a building. this is mostly so players who opt in for one playstyle dont fuck themselves over with the choices they make.

The difference is in those games, monster counts are drastically smaller, and there are also enemies that can combo you back or at least hit you for a good chunk of your HP.
With this setup you'll be chewing through hoardes of enemies that do very, very basic actions and it's gonna become a slog in a real hurry.

As long as you make the maps and enemies accommodate the size, that would be pretty awesome. As a matter of fact, you could make it have a Blaster Master style pacing and have levels split between larger areas where you can wreck shit with a mech suit, then smaller areas where you're forced to go on foot to get keys/switches/parts and repairs for the mech/etc.
Mapping would definitely be the hardest part, but a great mapper would definitely be able to make a concept like that work.

I remember something like Necrodome doing such things like going out your mecha suit but this time it's huge.
The Mech sections would definitely take place in areas like cities and wastelands where it goes more against big enemies.

Slave Zero did a good job at making city levels interesting.

Small areas have the pilot going in classic Doom maps that of course don't last for too long and go against regular sized enemies.

In case your mech gets heavily damaged you don't die but have to recharge it during the pilot form while surviving the enemies.

Things get really hard when you're trying to do gameplay that goes against the grain of a normal doom map, as in fucking with weapon progression, and how monsters behave. Though this becomes easier if you just make levels built around whatever you're making.

Oh, and if you're just doing basic shit like making new monsters and weapons, it's piss easy, DECORATE can take you far, which is the most simplistic doom modding language, Realm667 is a good source of examples for how weapons and monsters be made with DECORATE.
Besides DECORATE there's also ACS which is more indepth is similar to an actual coding language, I keep forgetting what it's comparable to. ACS is capable of doing more complex shit that DECORATE struggles with, I mainly use it for background stuff, like recharging weapons and cooldowns.
Finally there's ZScript which is the new hotness, documentation is still spotty for it but it's the most powerful language.

A good thing a Warhammer FPS should do is have multiple classes to choose from like:
-The usual blue guys
-Blood Raven
-Black Templars
-Imperial Guards
And so on.

A Doom mod where you can pick the enemies to tear apart could work so well,like Quake Champions Doom Edition did.
And let's not forget the companions as well.

In the end the potential for a mod or even an FPS is there but surprisingly no one really went further

I've decided to do a little celebration for the 20th anniversary of Unreal Tournament 1999, and also the end of the decade, by doing a Christmas/December time multiplayer server. I got a handful of Christmas/Winter themed CTF and DM maps. Specifically, 11 CTF maps and 19 DM maps.

Download the files below. One link is for maps, the other is for the game files itself. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to check if my install could be run on other systems besides my own. If you don't own UT99 and my install doesn't work for you, you can get the game on GOG for 2.49 USD.

These are required map files. When you open the individual map .zips for the maps in christmas.zip, you'll have to put each file where they belong in your UT99 directory. Handy guide:

In-game, click on Options at the top, and open Preferences. These are the general settings. Meanwhile, Player Setup is for your username, team, player skin and model, and voice. Weapons is just a list describing each weapon, but it also lets you toggle automatic weapon switching.

Dropbox for the maps (also contains unused maps I didn't have time to review and implement)

Don't have UT99? Here's a copy of the install I use. I tried making it as default as I knew how. There's some files that fix the OGL renderer, and the official Bonus Packs 1-4 along with Advanced Model Support.

I'll give you the weapon animations, but your other issue sounds like you're trying to get by with the double shotty as if it were Doom. In Quake your bread and butter is the rocket/nade launchers, followed by the super nailgun. The double shotty is only for when you're trying to conserve ammo or ran out of everything else and you will definitely have a bad time trying to get through the game just with it. It still takes slightly longer to kill things than Doom, but monster counts are also usually smaller.

the first few maps are experiments by the mapper with different light combat-oriented puzzling, that requres a bit more knowledge of the game than the usual fare.

YT allocates its bitrate to your video according to what bitrate and resolution it had.
If you want your video to look good, you need to make sure your video was compressed with H264, 50-60 MBit/s. If you encoded even at 40mbps, yt will overcompress it much more than if it was in 50mbps, since that seems to be a cutoff between low/high compression settings.
Uploading at higher resolution (1440p or 4k) also makes YT allocate more bitrate to lower resolutions as well, so upscaling things to 4k during the encoding would actually improve things a lot.

While DOOM is definitely a departure from DOOM I and II, I still enjoy it for what it is. And given how the developers main goal with this was to be as distinct as possible from the originals in terms of tone, I feel like they did a good job on that front.

I think it's actually somewhere inbetween, you are alone and scraping by, and the demons are threats, and everything is fucked, but you're also badass who can do this shit.

Think about it, Doomguy can carry so much ordnance on him, and he can run and strafe like a madcunt, even when he's scraping by for resources, he's real fast and agile, he's also strong, to the point that some sci-fi steroid injections can make him punch a man so hard that he fucking explodes.
Plutonia would be a great exemplar of this, where the odds are really stacked against you, but since you're bad motherfucker (as in, good at the game), you can see it through to the other side and best the greatest challenges.

I like this picture a lot for that, cornered and wounded, he's in a vulnerable position, but you can also see that he's calculating the right maneuver he has to do to evade the incoming attacks while also cooking them with the plasma rifle he has there.

You find a door, then you must explore level to find a key, or switch, which opens up more areas to explore and so on, with players some times revisiting older areas to gain access to places he didn't have access before.

That is not necessarily bad, it encourages a different kind of strategical thinking but different doesn't automatically equal worse. The real problem is that most CoD style games have ONE type of enemy (hitscan guy with an assault rifle) and all of the two dozen weapons in the game are in reality just reskins of the same two weapons: an assault rifle and a shotgun. There are gimmick one off enemies and weapons (that you could consider "boss fights" like the sniper duel in CoD 5 or whatever it was) but for the most part modern shooters just reek of laziness above everything else, unwillingness to even try to make something above the bare minimum out of the systems they have in place. You could mod CoD to have infinite ammo and let you walk at mach 5, it wouldn't make it a better game.

I really like the aesthetic that Suspended in Dusk, Back To Saturn X and Ancient Aliens go with. They tend to employ smart usage of textures and architecture to achieve a more subtle approach to detailing, usually only relying on sectors when necessary. SiD and BTSX are even vanilla compatible.

I was never a fan of the details in stuff like Knee Deep in ZDoom. Too loud and in your face with the amount of bloat thats on screen at a time.

The early 2000s still incorporate some great classic style level design like Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
The overall design never feels repetitive or tedious for the most part and manages to keep the pacing balanced,later on we had more about cover based shooters or others that tried to emulate the top franchises at the time and failed like Turok in 2008.

There are also shooters that have cover as an essential part but manages to be engaging with their level design like F.E.A.R.
Not the most impressive visually but the AI and the gameplay possibilities make up for it,considering that even the enemies try to exploit the enviroment to their advantage something that other shooters from late 2000s and onward mostly threw out of the window.
Never use the same strategy and go all out,even slow motion has to be exploited wisely,meanwhile other shooters later on shoved it for the sake of it.

The problem is that if you make the AI too fast and too good, you can't have fast paced action gameplay because players get skewered. Hell in Doom having that mix of stuff sort of justifies the looks of demons, whenever they don't look "demonic" enough, meaning even if the Carcass from Eternal looks like a Strogg, he can be compared to the Spiderdemons and Mancs at least.

metadoom is the kind of mod that capitalized on a concept noone really tried before and did it better, as far as anyone knows, but at the same times may suffer from trying to be "too good" for its own good
the amount of content and polish makes it feel like a test mod, even when it tries to be as balanced and "non gamebrakey" as possible, so it tries to be stuck in some odd middleground
the mix of art styles can be kinda justified, since this is before d4v had proper summoner/cyberfatso sprites (and then later borrowred the mash up spiderdemon design) and i don't think anyone was interested enough to draw better sprites for this mod besides maybe drpyspy (and because it's a kinsie mod)
some of the stuff just being there for a reference or nod to something also shows another example of "too much polish" and when something almost feels like it's better than it actually is
