The only thing that I know about this game is that it's very long (over a 100 hours to beat) and that there is an optional boss battle with God himself. Also I want to play the PS1 version of the game, but how does the remake on the 3DS differ? Thoughts on the game in general?

Only worth playing if you've played other Dragon Quest games and just can't get enough. You have to be absolutely in love with the series to appreciate this game.

This. It has the DQ nostalgia angle going for it, but it's otherwise a rather standard rpg with a grindy system, slightly above-average plot and below-average graphics (even for it's own era). Pacing is rather grueling too. It's been a damn long time, but I remember that you didn't even get into the first battle until a little over an hour, and I think I had a little over a dozen hours in before I was finally able to unlock and pick classes for my party. And it just keeps going...and going...and going...

I remember getting about 50 hours in and getting stuck on a boss, so I finally caved and looked up a walkthrough.....to find that I was barely over a third of the way through the game.

Had to drop the game right then and there.

it's shit, a timesink with shallow gameplay, shallow story and shallow level design. It's a prime example of the JRPG, one of the worst genres ever made.

it's my favorite dragon quest. it's cute, I like the characters, there's a lot of stuff to see and do, and the class system is fun (grindy though). my brain is broken and I'm into games like this, so I don't recommend it to the average player for similar reasons above.

the 3DS remake streamlines some portions of the game, including removing the entire first dungeon, walking between rooms in the ruins, and making it easier to find "tablet shards". it also changes how skills work for the class system.

>> No.6086934

I don’t know why it was made the way it was. No other DQ is comparatively as long for the era it was made in. It kind of seems like they did it just to do it.

>> No.6086939

>>6086852
I chugged through the entire thing as a 12-year old and loved it then but was also a total autismo with all the time in the world though and went out of my way to grind as many classes as possible. I was also dumb on top of that, and got stuck many times which was the only justification for my 72 hour playthrough - I honestly have no idea how people clocked 100+ on this game unless they were also just as dumb.

If you go through it as an adult, you might find that the class system is a bit underutilized and largely unnecessary, with no pressure at all on mastering things at all and that the pacing is only truly thrown off due to the hunt for "tablets" you need to progress into future segments of the game.

Depending on what you love about Dragon Quest as a series it's either the most Dragon Quest out of the Dragon Quest games or the least Dragon Quest. The whole idea is moving towards more of a vignette style of story telling. With tons of smaller stories some linking together some by themselves. With the main quest being kind of sprinkled around as you are progressing through the whole game. Think of it more like original Dragon Ball. With each island being a saga or arc. I personally find it one of my favorite game in the series but I can understand why people dislike it. Like with most thing Dragon Quest it loves taking it's time but since the main story isn't even really talked about until 20 hours in it really hard for you to care about what you are doing unless you are weirdly into the whole vignette style of storytelling which I am.

I need some input from hard core DQ fans. I finally want to dive into the DQ universe and right now 1-3 are pretty cheap on the eshop. What do you guys think about the updated ones that the eshop sells? Should I be a purist and play the originals without the updated look?

Based on what I've heard the console versions are based on the mobile version which is fine if a bit weird. SNES tends to be the version most say is the best way to play 1-3 (myself included) but if you want to play DQ1-3 mobile/console should be fine.

DQ1 is most of a proof of concept of how to do a JRPG with exploring and diving into dungeons of items. 99% of it however is just pure grinding.

DQ2 expands upon DQ1 by an insane degree. Party members, better selection of spells, more items to bounce around, ect. But as you play it you can feel it was a bit rushed since it's not really balanced well. And trying to explore just become tiresome.

DQ3 however is where everything comes together in one of the best JRPG ever made.

The only reason to play the NES is for the grinding honestly. SNES/mobile just lowers the EXP requirement so it's not like you are ruining yourself for not playing the NES version.

PS1 version is the one I played last year, and I loved this game, its currently my 3rd favorite in the series. (was 2nd favorite before XI came out)

3DS version cuts down on the content of the game to shorten it, resulting in the player missing out on absolute kino like at the start of the game, where it takes almost 2 hours before you get your first random battle, and it really gets you invested, sure, any RPG can just be peaceful and then suddenly monster encounters happen within minutes of starting the game (Secret of Mana for example) but in DQ7 on PS1, you get to really feel that there are no monsters, 2 hours of just walking around and talking to people, and investigating some mysterious ruins, before you end up sending yourself to the past, and encountering monsters for the first time in these character's lives, because of how long the game goes without an encounter, I feel like the build-up works really well, and you can understand the shock they must be feeling. Its a small thing, but its something that I really love about it

Another thing the 3DS removes in the in battle party chat, which is a real shame, because that was something that was very charming to use. If someone killed a monster, other party members would praise them if you talked to them mid battle, and if someone got killed and then you talk to your other party members, they will be shocked and in disbelief that the character is dead. You could even give monsters a free turn against you if you talked too many times in one turn, which was another factor that made it really fun to use, it was really immersive imo.

On the bright side for the 3DS version, it made classes easier to level up, fragments are easier to find, and encounters are visible on the field, but this is a double-edged sword, since the hallways of dungeons are so tight that its impossible to avoid encounters in them, which can lead to cases where the encounter rate ends up being higher than the PS1's random battles.

Play in release order. All of the mainline games except X have some version of them with a "modern" translation, so if you value consistency above all else, the eshop & mobile versions of 1-3 are what you want to play. Every version past the original NES 1&2 have been made less grindy/easier in some way. eshop versions have ugly fucked up art though, and mobile has shitty mobile controls, so I personally prefer SNES fantranslations of 1-3 or GBC remakes of 1-2. Both fantranslations for 1-2 have a few bugs, and the version of 2's that I played had multiple softlocks present, so be warned. GBC remakes for 1-2 are good, if you can deal with the typical GBC things like smaller screen size. Also 3's SNES remake w/ fan translation is virtually perfect, and has things missing from all other versions like animated battle sprites (this includes the eshop version). It's Important to note that the SNES remake adds a TON of shit that wasn't in the original game. New classes, equipment, etc.

As for the games themselves, 1 is awesome. For some reason people shit on it for being grindy, but the only time I had to grind in 1 SNES was right before the final boss. Having 1 party member is weird but cool, and exploration is better than a lot of later titles.
2 is excellent, until you get to a certain point where it drags hard. It's also very difficult. It's probably the game with the most unmitigatable bullshit, but it's still pretty fun.
3 is the best. Just play it, shit's great.
