You humour me greatly with your arrogance and contempt, a flood of accusations born from the poison of envy and smite of disrespect. I feel both disappointment and flattery these thoughts would originate from another player who has demonstrated one of a kind talent and has accomplished the impossible, yet is apparently immune from judgement owing to their reputation, do not think your words hold more credibility just because of who you are, being more well known and what you have accomplished in breaking world records and setting ones never previously accomplished, such as with TNT and Plutonia Nightmare. With that being said I will divulge my thoughts on the serious accusations you have set forth.

I still feel like Doom would work better as an animated series than as a movie.

A team of five or six characters with the usual 90's SatAM personality types: The tough jockish bro leader of the group, the wisecracking cool guy, the girly-girl, the tomboy, the tech geek, and the gruff old mechanic who's been serving since before the other main characters were born. They're called "the Doom Squad" and they fly in spaceships, go to places in our solar system, fight demons and save people, and somehow nobody ever dies.

Just don't follow the Midnight path.

I see sick fanarts on Twitter that don't get the attention they deserve or modding but artworks and memes that feel like they were made by people who just entered in the community but don't have interest to even go for the most basic mods unless is a shitty meme that died in less than a month.Hell it feels like they jumped in because Doom is popular as fuck and now and use it to gain attention....or just stupid.

and that's exactly it. Most of those people are either people who just here for the memes, big dummies, or consume Doom at the most basic surface level so usually the basic shallow stuff that's easy to consume will get the most attention.

That's just how this works. It's best to not worry about it, and just enjoy the content you care about.

You can play this on the condition that you don't pass any judgement on the mod in it's current form from this. I made it (excluding some vital math stuff I'd already gotten from a friendly anon here) in about half a sleepless week in early 2016.

It runs on terrible acs, spawns infinite camera actors, displays debugging messages and shit. Copy pasting the "how to play" that went with it here:

>1. Play in 4:3
>2. Remove your hud
>3. Weapon state 1 and Weapon State 2 turn you left and right respectively
>4. weapon state 3 and 4 adjust your pitch, but I suggest not using them in this version.

Whenever i think of anyone taking Doom at surface value or how its pop culture status was mostly defined by fanbase jokes and not a lot of actual ingame stuff, i can see why Decino is popular.
The fact that his content is focused on Doom's gameplay and is informative about it is like a reminder of why Doom is good and what makes it interesting.
Everyone can like something for different reasons but Decino's content just shows the true value of Doom most of the time.
Like, that's what makes Doom special.
I won't be surprised if some people never even thought of how the BFG worked before.
Doom being a "gamplay first" series means two things:
>You're either deep into it like a speed runner, "analyst", modder, mapper, wiki writer etc
>Or it means the series is taken at face value because it's just "shooting demons" so apparently, Doom needed story this whole time

Yes. Game's great. Definitely worth $1.50 or whatever it is.
It takes a little bit to get used to the controls and it might seem a little overwhelming (can't even imagine how long it would take to get used to the original controls, though), but it's pretty fun once you get into it. It's like an old-school FPS Metroid game. It has power-ups and upgrades and you can even customize the interface a bit to your liking, which is extremely cool. And the audio-logs are cheesy, but add a lot to the atmosphere and puzzle-solving.
However, because of a very unnecessary puzzle at some point in the game, I highly recommend at least reading the "For Starters" part of this guide, unless you just don't like using guides: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1761349780
It's also a decent guide in general if you ever get stuck (which, if you're as bad as me, will be pretty often).

Also, if you haven't played System Shock 2, buy that, too. Bioshock 1 and 2, as well. Or pirate them. I've played all 4 of them recently and they're all well worth your time.

Look at this. Every pathway is blocked by enemies that can one-shot you. Try to leave and another horde of monsters will spawn directly in your way. Try to dodge, and likely you'll either be blocked by a monster or run into another projectile coming from behind you. So sick of this sadistic design style the cacowards jerk off over. Just replayed the game a few weeks ago, and played through Return to Na Pali for the first time.

I guess if you don't like it now, you won't like it later, though there are some really good places yet to see in the game.

If you hate the game when you get to Mothership, then fuck it, just quit. No reason to torture yourself.

Shooting and movement really doesn't feel right in Unreal, it never gets fun if you're looking for that. (using AutoMag more made it more tolerable for my last playthrough).

The reason I liked this game is beautiful places the game lets you roam about, and levels designed around exploration with _lots_ of decently sized optional areas.

The game would be better off if it wasn't a shooter, maybe a sneaking game, or a combination of sneaking / shooting, whatever the player chooses. Or even first person adventure (talking out of my ass). Shooting sucks here.

Level design IS art, multilayered art in fact, as you use the game's base artistic resources, or even add and make new ones.
It's an art purely in aesthetics and architecture, in set building and immersion, but also an art in making a challenge that is enjoyable and rewarding, on top of Doom's emphasis on music, itself an art.

You could argue there's a lot of recycling, which may feel cheap for an art, but that's part of how this art is fairly easy to approach, the community around the art welcomes a newcomer to try his hand at it, hoping they'll enjoy it as much as they do, maybe they'll make something the community will enjoy too.

It's a kind of folk art, really, and what matters is that WE appreciate it, we don't need any high institutions or other authorities to recognize us, because the reason we do it is because we enjoy it, we do it for us.

Cacowards serve to show off other mods beside Brutal Doom to most people, sometimes journalists too.
And some people usually say they wished some other mods would get more attention.
Like, where Bloom or Dakka ever mentioned in any article?
It's almost the same problem as the VGA's calling itself a "celebration of gaming" but the attention mostly goes to AAA games and shit nobody cares about, until something Japanese that isn't Zelda/From or a niche title is brought up.

Neat. Looks like everything is manual with this one. Super slow creating new 7.76 (breaking down 4.26 for powder and lead, prepping 7.76 brass, casting new 7.76 bullets and finally reloading new 7.76 cartridges), but significantly, if not completely reduces danger of any incidents that can cause the bullet creation to fail compared to the auto reload kit, which can have little misfires occasionally as it skitters around doing it's thing.

No clue what cthon is. Besides a boss in quake. Outlaws is pretty good, and it works on Windows 10 (works better with the dgvoodoo wrapper though). The art is pretty ugly, but the gunplay is fun. Any quality WADs similar to Going Down you can recommend? (ie no bullshit, no labyrinthine scouring for keys, no slaughterfest but also no 40 enemies per map and genuinely fun to play)

I've been on an old Doom lately, but half the 'recommended' wads are endless closets of chaingunners, weapon switch traps, unintuitive level design where you'll spend half your playtime looking for keys and switches etc. I just want a no-bullshit, mindless, mid-sized slaughter, not snipe hitscanners behind every second turn (fucking Plutionia, ugh)

On a semi-related note, Eviternity is a fucking masterpiece. I never thought doom would look genuinely -good-, but here we are. Level design is incredible as well, being complex yet incredibly intuitive and doing an excellent job at leading you where you're supposed to go. The new enemies are great, too.

Now with YQ2 and Q2XP you can pull large shit even more over the top than Q1 mapping with AD, its just that you are limited to starbase strogg tech tileset.

Why not make a Strogg station map which you need to use zero gravity to reach other parts of it?

Also Q2XP and even the fucking RTX supports Md3, which is good for custom stuff like using ETQW and Q4 Assets for modding, and you can even COnvert MD3 to MD2 and keep the animations for other ports.

we need a Q2WID which you end up finding quake 1 monsters in some areas due to the slipgate shenanigans that the stogg uses it.

Also Gunner and Ogre traps because it needs to be more sadistic.

>> No.6087398

Quake 2 doesn't really have better enemies at all, there's a LOT of hitscan enemies and it doesn't do anything interesting with the few other types of enemies it has, for instance the ogres in Q1 were plentiful and usually were used in conjunction with the level design to keep you on your toes because you had to be mindful of the nades, in Q2 there's like one enemy that uses nades, only uses them sometimes, you can probably count with your hands the number of times it appears on the entire game, and the level usually gives you ample space to keep clear of his nades so they're trivial. Also, after Q1 finally got it right, Q2 falls into the same Doom trap where the sshotgun is the do-it-all weapon you use 90% of the time.

>> No.6087401

I love Quake 3 but I wouldn't compare it to the other games mainly because it's a different beast.
If you want single player with Quake 3 weapons go for Hunter's Moon.

>> No.6087408

All of it because WILLITS forced carmack to change the original AI codes for quake 2 to fuck with Brian and adrian.
Here are the things that Q2 AI had before the change in the code, which is still there,

>Cover protection behind crates, meaning that gunners could spam grenades from behind crates or other rooms
>Enemies were more agressive, mainly SMG strogg and enforcers were chaingunners
>flyers were pests and harder to deal with it
>Tanks were more dangerous and had Melee Attacks that knocked you back to his line of sight
>berserker were pests as fiends
>Guards could use grenades

There is a reason of why Mission pack enemies are more harder than Stock Q2 enemies, and all of it is fucking Tim Willits fault.

Less monster variation (no Archies, Revenants, Fatsos, Pain Elementals, or Hellknights), and no Super Shotgun, but the levels are still good.
TNT Evilution (Final Doom) is kind of a mixed bag of 1995 era mapping, some of it pretty good, some of it kinda eh, a little of it pretty bad, opinions are mixed. The Plutonia Experiment (also Final Doom) is much more consistent, also much more challenging, don't force yourself to play that on Ultra-Violence if you find it too frustrating.

Or you could play Quake.

Combining all three of the numbers
Doom 1 = 1040
Doom 2 = 1046
TNT = 2085
Plutonia = 1105
So Plutonia is actually only somewhat higher than the main iwads. It just seems like theres a lot more because Plutonia was more about making threatening encounters with them, rather than using them for cannon fodder.
TNTs much higher amount I'd imagine is because a good chunk of its levels are basically KDITD combat + Chaingunners in most areas, alongside a few levels that are longer than anything from the other iwads.

I've been trawling through the internet looking for Unreal content out of boredom, and I noticed that there's a surprising amount of Christmas themed maps for UT1999/2004. This got me thinking about doing some sort of "Xmas end of the decade" gamenight for one or maybe both games.

I DLed a bunch of maps and am about to do a quick review of each one to see if they at the very least function. Then it's on to figuring out how to actually set up a server since I'm a massive brainlet.

Would anyone here be interested in joining something like this? Should it be posted about here or somewhere else? Should I maybe try making a thread on /v/ to get more players, since they've had UT gamenights before?

I would actually say map design is still quite important - but the focus is on the individual arenas rather than the overall level progression, which is largely irrelevant. The gameplay would fail without smartly-designed arenas that enable dynamic gameplay. Painkiller and Shadow Warrior 2013 also had arena combat, but they were less fun because their layouts were overly flat and became repetitive quickly.

>> No.6089898

>I would actually say map design is still quite important
Yeah, true. I was thinking more 'map design' as ''the progression from area to area'', as classic also has arena combat in certain places. DOOM 2016's repetition lies in the fact that arena combat is the only real modus operandus of the enemy, whereas classic does not treat maps as 'intermissions' between large fights.

I can't imagine the reasoning behind a lot of GZDooms designs, but eventually they usually sort it out. It's getting to the point of bloat though.

>It's getting to the point of bloat
It passed bloat well before 4.0

I far prefer classic Doom, but I felt Doom 2016 managed to be a painkiller clone where the combat is actually fun.
Also, the levels "Foundry" and "Argent Facility" actually did have a bit of exploration in them compared to the rest of the game. If Eternal has more levels like them, I'd easily call it better than 2016.

The most dangerous game.
Hand ball.
Or whatever this games rules actually were.

>You're regarded as a god in the community for making the best mod ever

more like
>you are regarded as a god by easily-swayed 12 year olds and posers, whose loyalty to you is minute
>get despised by rest of the community for being shit coder and squandering all potential you had on a single mod nobody cares about anymore
There's a reason Mark didn't get hired anywhere during the retro-fps renaissance - modders that were hired have been prolific and versatile, while all he's ever done are 2.5 flavours of Brewtall.

>with just Doom 64 as the only different one
He also did Brutal Strife. It was what it was, Weapons Of Rebellion is much better.

>> No.6091185

It looks kinda neat. The guy isn't without chops (he's unironically good at making levels, when he's not recycling chunks outta Freedoom), it's just he has some flaws, and he's content just bloating/scope creeping Brutal Doom to infinity, to the point that he's diluting its good qualities.

>> No.6091191

I'm thinking it'll be like Doom 4, but a little better, so it should be a pretty decent game.

>> No.6091209

I did the same thing. G4 Sunbathing is a neat level but it always gets me running around like a moron for too long and kills my momentum. Which is a shame cause IIRC it's not long after that level that Durandal kidnaps you and the game really starts to pick up.

>> No.6091226

The map design is pretty weak, but the combat can be pretty fun.

>> No.6091236

>map design is still quite important
It is, and Doom 4's weakest point is its level design, but the gameplay manages to be pretty enjoyable still.

I really hope that Doom 5 has a focus of better map design.

Crucified Dreams is stupidly gorgeous to look at, but since nobody seems to play it, I assume it's not that great. If you want some inspiration for making maps with gothic aesthetics, Crucified Dreams has that going for it.

I had always wanted ridiculously gorgeous gothic maps like that for single player, and while I didn't get that for Doom, Arcane Dimensions for Quake was pretty much what I always wanted.

>> No.6091352

Nobody played Blood keyboard only back in 1997, short of absolute poorfags with PCs which could barely run the game anyway.

That said, the highest difficulty level, Extra Crispy, is intended for co-op multiplayer, not singleplayer.

>> No.6091548

When you compare it to the dark days of the ps3 era its better.
