I remember it being popular back in the day, at least I still have advertisements and comments on game magazines from back then, I bought it back then, and I know people who bought it back then, too.
Nowadays, popularity of games have changed a bit, and people follow series more.
Shmups becoming a niche genre after the danmaku apocalypse didn't helpt either.

It's decent if a little snoozeinducing due to no difficulty and spaces of little to shoot at. It's pretty chillout with the music and all. Supposedly Super Aleste has stuff left out of Space Megaforce so try it. There's even a patch for the japanese version, though being a shmup there's not much you'll need to know.

Compileshit usually has powerups act as hit shields - take a hit and you power down and don't die. Soldier Blade took from this too. You can relax a little and more casual players can have fun, but you'll need it as difficulty ramps up. It's fair yet not a euroshmup lifebar. Only thing Raizinglike is powerup 'chips' that you need a ton of before it powers your main shot up a level, which the Mahou series uses.

I love shmups but hate that game in particular along with axelay.

Mode 7 fake 3d graphics looked like shit back then and still look like shit today. It doesnt enhance the gameplay in anyway and in the case of axelay makes it worse.

Play Macross scrambled valkyrie or darius twin and darius force (supernova in usa) if you want to play a good shmup that almost gets zero regocnition.

SNES didn't get the shmup fans for some reason. It had a great library, but the fans of the genre were on the TG-16 (in Japan) or Genesis (in the west), so the SNES games were being released to an indifferent audience. Since emulation came out the SNES' shmup library has gotten more recognition, because it's fucking awesome.

Gave this another go tonight, far better than I remember, though you've gotta suck at shmups if you can't 1cc it on normal. There's some silly gimmick levels where you've gotta wait for drill machines to drill holes though walls instead of blowing them up that'll take a few lives if you don't understand that's what you've gotta do. Combine that with the few times you might die without a 'super' life and be stuck with level 0 weapons with a bad start and you might lose a few, but lives are handed out like candy. You'll make them back up without trying.

Level gimmicks like being quick enough to blow up little bombs that open up particularly powerup filled routes are great and I wish more shmups used them. The little 'caravan' stages are fun but an actual caravan mode is oddly absent.

Space Megaforce has a different ending to Japanese Super Aleste, it's less plotliney but more spectacle. I do prefer the cleaner voice samples in SM, but SA has animu.
