Is it worth it?
I already played 1 & 2 and was unimpressed. 1 felt like an 8-bit JRPG and 2 had some attempts at flourish but the core game design was middling.

3 is pretty good but the prologue is long and slow and the game's pace is generally really bad. I'd honestly just go straight for BOF4 and maybe Dragon Quarter if you want something unorthodox.

3 is a typical slow-paced, bog-standard JRPG of the 90s with nice art and music, and the dragon transformation gameplay is pretty cool once you get to use it.

Personally I found 1-3 all pretty boring and though it's far from perfect, 4 was pretty solid and quite a few steps above the others. But that said 3 has a few pretty diehard fans around here so it's at least worth trying.

There's nothing noteworthy about 3 except for how annoying it is to hit even basic event triggers and all the stupid mini games that gives you wrong instructions.

>> No.6078151

3 is the pinnacle of BoF. Interactive dragon gene system, fun characters, interesting world, good storytelling that dedicates enough time to all its episodes, best fishing by far.

1 is forgettable
2 is random battle bonanza
4 railroads you hard and completely lacks the adventure aspect

best fishing indeed, even if bof4 is also good. i wish there were more game with the rhythm fishing concept. it could be expanded a lot

The fuck does that even mean? Because I don't recall the other games doing shit like having you sail the skies to see giant snake elephant thunder dragon god

Everything you do in BoF4 is like an errand run with a predictable end. Not a single event matches that of crossing the sea to combinat or going to Myria station.

I thought that was the best part of the game. Few villains really get a rise out of you like BoF4 does. They're all mediocre games in general but at least 4 has a great presentation and some interesting storytelling.

Not him but I totally disagree with that. It's a slow build but it definitely feels like a huge adventure. It's just not fast paced, but that's some of what's great about it. I wish I could just play a Fou Lu farming sim for 80 hours on end.

I feel like that game would have been so much better received if it was just called Dragon Quarter, not Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter

3 waste's too much of it's run time on the child half and then the adult half really half asses it's big moments. The reunion with Teepo at the end was completely underwhelming. Nothing Myria said made any kind of sense because the dragons never did anything remotely close to the threat she said they presented.

>if it was just called Dragon Quarter, not Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter
That would definitely have been the case, or at least frame it as a Gaiden game. It wouldn't make people any warmer towards the rest of the games mechanics but maybe it also wouldn't have been called the game that killed the franchise until that was no longer the case.

>> No.6081460

>game that killed the franchise

DQ didn't KILL the franchise. Capcom being CAPCOM killed the franchise. It was just the most recent one before they started to hang up a lot of their ips. Capcom was shelving shit left and right during that period. In terms of reception and sales the game did fine financially.

Idk BoF3 is really a comfy game, yes maybe the story isn’t the best but overall it’s the most comfy. Also the gene system was the most elaborate system of transformation of the whole serie.
Those tent moments are great and I liked most of the characters, even those annoying stations.

Also the fact that game have a real world map with secret areas felt greater than that flat map in BoF4.

I will always consider BoF3 > BoF4 for those reasons.

I liked it for the combat and characters, not the story though. Music was decent too.

yeah but bof3 already felt far less like an adventure than bof2, where you could actually travel the map freely

What are you talking about they are the best thing of the entire show. You have no idea how I felt when they destroyed your house and your orphan friends who raised you like a brother disappeared.

BOF3 is fucking brilliant. I unironically felt less things in FF6 than BOF3.

It's worth it just for the music alone

The music maaan the fucking music. It is 120% soul. It is almost TOO much soul. Just listen to this.

>DQ didn't KILL the franchise
I am aware, but it was the first BoF title I played and when I went to check about the others and see how other people enjoyed it I got met with a lot of resentment towards it. it had the reputation of being the franchise killer when the reality is that Sales for the BoF series in japan at least had already been declining between III and IV and Capcom was probably culling the herd. I think one of the reasons that BoF had a lot of experimental ideas was because the devs knew this and they also stated that they wanted to change up the visuals since they were producing full 3D models and not sprites. Seems like DQ was a hail mary kind of game.

I did pick up BoF3 on the PSP afterwards though, I really need to finish it.

It's as generic as the rest of them, except this time it has awkward polygonal graphics and almost no camera control.
Capcom are not known for their writing quality.

Why did they keep fucking around with the art? They replaced the original art (which the sprites actually look like) with more plain stuff and the boxart makes no sense either.
