About to start my first playthrough of A Link to the Past. Figured if anybody had an interest I would set up a thread to show my progress.

I didn't want to be that person constantly bumping their own thread so I figured I'd do it this way.

Any time somebody posts (obviously me excluded) I'll post a screenshot of where I'm at in the game and maybe make a comment on it. That way if nobody is interested, nobody will post and I'll be 404'd in no time.

Choosing my name now.

Also, maybe set a user name like OP. You can keep this from polluting other threads (as it is saved in a cookie) by using another browser just for this thread, or the "private/incognito" mode of Firefox/Chrome, which keeps cookies sandboxed.

Great that you've decided to play it. It's one of my all-time favorite games. Only thing yo mightl miss when emulating it are the physical pack-ins that were included in the box, like this map.

You can't avoid Heart Containers left behind by bosses in this game. If you want to do a minimalist run, you can't pick up any pieces of heart, which would ruin the exploration on your first playthrough. Just go through the game at your own pace, and pick up anything you happen to come across.

Yes. You can break signs with the master sword, break pots with arrows, dive underwater, there's a slight difference in the bump direction when you hit enemies and at least the soldiers have a different walking pattern.

There is. If you want an abvious one, go to the Hyrule Castle basement to that large room with the black pit to the right and the blue soldier. In the SNES version, when you first get to that screen, he'll always start walking right. In the GBA version, he'll look around first then starts walking left.

You can save & quit with the select button. Just remember that the game doesn't make a distinction between game overs and saving & quitting, and records this count until the end of the game.
