>So how's the translation quality
it seems fine. this is definitely the kind of translation that you would get if sega officially did this because they translate quite a few things from japanese into another language (the enemies named after japanese colors are named after the equivilent english word, and instead of oni-chan or kaichou you have people using similar words in a different language. also no honorifics)

they do at least ouline all the stuff they changed in terms of writing style. the actual dialogue is all there, including a lot of iris stuff that would absolutely get downplayed if this was translated back when the saturn was relevant.
> are there any bugs?
another thing they outline, the only real one I've noticed is that the combat sprites get garbled for one frame in some animations

Dreamcast is allowed because back when 4chan was in its prime, "retro" gaming meant every dead console before the current gen. The then current gen was GBA, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox. Every single retro gaming site adhered to those rules too, for example Underground Gamer and Pleasuredome allowed everything up to Dreamcast but not beyond.
DC may have been technically the same gen as PS2, but they competed for, like, half a year before Sega killed the console and went multiplatform. So it kinda never was part of the console generation.

Also if you want a more technical explanation, DC is a 1998 console, PS2 is 2000 and GBA is 2001. The cutoff date is pre-2000 because it's a nice big round number. If this concept is too difficult for you to follow, then fuck off.

As for ps2/gcn/gba discussion, we'd need a /v2k/ board for that, but Hiro is a faggot so we wont.

I really wanted to love this game, I love the designs, art direction and music. But it'a just too bland. Blending Visual novel, dating sim and strategy RPG while all elements are shallow, being a master of none kinda deal. The dating sim aspect is too simplistic because every girl wants to get down on your cock the moment you meet them. The strategy RPG is barebones. The visual novel aspect is not enjoyable.

>> No.6081889

I just finished this. Okay, it's not bad, and it's very reminiscent of the anime of its era, which completely works for me. But it's not brilliant? the strategy sections are very shallow, the dating sim stuff is fun but sometimes feels a little chaste. I love the art, the music is great, and I appreciate that so much of the material is voice acted so well. I'd say if you have a fondness for early 90's anime and like very basic romance stories you'll enjoy it, and just as a piece of significant art on the sega saturn it's nice to play it for completion sake.

I have not played V, which was translated officially, I'm assuming the intervening years of development have significantly a lot of the negative, I'll have to try that next.

It was fine, I don't know enough about the original material to make too strong a judgement, but it read well and I understood what was going on.

>the dating sim stuff is fun but sometimes feels a little chaste
because you're their boss. it's more of a general social sim with minor elements of "who is your GF on the side" than a dating sim. it's similar to the modern persona games in this way. I thought the timed dialogue options and the fact that I had to try and make everyone happy or have the rpg segments take even longer was pretty engaging.

In terms of being chaste, the later games build on this because you can import saves from one game to the next and build on the established relationship you already had.
>I have not played V, which was translated officially, I'm assuming the intervening years of development have significantly a lot of the negative,
5 was so bad that it killed the franchise for about a decade and the general consensus is "the main girl is really cool, shame she's in this bad game". not helped by it being about brand new chaacters while 1-4 were all the same general continuity the games people are truly excited about in this franchise are 2 and 3

when you get to the second disc you're presented with the option to go to a festival with your girl of choice, the person to ask you first will be the girl with the highest life stats, after that it basically prioritizes that characters in interactions, and will become your canon waifu.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, it really just affects 1 cutscene at the end of the game, as well as who the credits prioritizes pictures of, in my ending the two characters didn't even kiss.

it's fine. the best and worst thing about it is that there's no leveling up/exp at all, you just get better gear at arbtirary story milestones. that means you're encouraged to kind of blitz through levels and that can be interesting, but it also makes it feel a little flat. what you say to people changing their mood and giving them better/worse stats is kinda cool though

Because the technical people involved know the Saturn and have experience working in other Saturn games. So it was the more approachable port.

Part of the team had been working on the PC version for years and made little progress because they couldn't get it to run in Modern windows, which made it difficult for even their own team to debug and test it.

Dreamcast has the mess of dealing with GD-ROMs. So you're forced to make the following choice if you want to play on real hardware:

1) Work with the GDI image but then you can only play it on real hardware if you have a GD-EMU.
2) Try and get it to fit on a CD-ROM by compressing or cutting things out of the disc image to make it fit.

Saturn on the other hand you just need either a PseudoSaturn Cart or a Mod chip and you're good to go. It's more approachable from a developer stand point as well as from a player stand point.

Sort of on topic (and to bump the thread) - I want to try translating a game sometime next year. How does the process work? It seems like TLs and ROM hackers are both a skill that would be in short supply (for competent ones that is). Do TLs just announce a project on GBATemp or wherever and wait for someone to come along, or do hackers have their own games that they've broken (do they do that? See which games are "workable" beforehand and make a list for TLs to pick from?)
