It's pretty neat, but not incredibly special
It pushed the GBC so close to it's limits that if it weren't for the limited colors you'd swear it was a GBA game
People love it because it's cute as fuck

Just get a cheap 3DS, the old models are arround 150$ new, and it has like a billion other games so it's not like you're getting it just for Shantae

Yeah I'm planning to, since getting a DS was the best gaming decision I've ever made. I want to go with an XL, though, since I'm poor as fuck and it's not much more expensive than regular 3DS. Was hoping there was a way to emulate it, but I guess not.

3DS is easily the best 8th gen system by far
Unfortunately, since it came out people completely ditched DSi homebrew, so emulators for DSiware probably won't see the light of day for a long ass time

3DS is pretty nice. I just bought the XL Red/Black about a week ago.

I dig it. I am kinda sad it only plays DS games and doesn't go farther back, not that it matters... you can get earlier Gameboys for dirt cheap.

I'm pretty sure they dropped GBA compatibility because of how much room the carts take (relatively), DSfat was fine because size wasn't an issue, but to get the DSlite as small as it was the carts had to stick out like half an inch, and they just stopped with the DSi

If you get a DS flashcard though, you can emulate GB, GBC, GBA, Nes and a surprisingly decent amount of Snes games.
the 3DS Eshop has an okay amount of GBC, Nes and GBA game too though if you don't mind paying for roms

I played Risky's Revenge and thought it was an extremely mediocre and flawed Metroid clone. My disappointment was immense after the characters and style were so hyped up to me

People tell me the first one is better, I guess I'll see when it hits Virtual Console.

Specifically, you'd want a Supercard DStwo. It has an onboard processor that does a good job of emulating SNES and GBA specifically, whilst there is GameYob and NESDS that will work on any DS flashcart.

If you get a DSTwo, TempGBA and CATSFC are the GBA and SNES emulators you want to use, not the official ones.

A lot of people recommend R4, but nintendo actually fights "fake" carts, it's nothing an update won't fix though if it gets blocked
DStwo has really active support, R4 gets an update like once a year, so you're fucked if an R4 stops working

Fun fact, there was going to be a GBA shantae but it got scrapped, it doesn't look like it would have been too different from Risky's revenge though
