Okay people, bad news first: apparently Factory isn't going to come out on January 1, so we'll still be relying on memes to keep this general alive:

There were a few interesting questions asked in the previous thread that didn't get as many responses as they probably could (if we didn't have that shitty autosage limit), so I'll repost them here:

Anon (>>6065415) asked:
Is the Homm5.5 mod any good? Also, how do you guys rank the HOMM5 factions?

Anon (>>6068340) asked:
What do you guys like more? The normal hero? Or the kind offered in 4?
Not that theyve been any good so far, but I hope that if they ever make an 8, and if they actually end up making it good, thag it has the type of heroes that were in 4.

From what I recall from more than a decade ago, the problem with H4 heroes was that they started off completely useless and you were better off just having a stack of units, but became unstoppable murder machines if you bothered to level them up enough. With very little in-between. It was an idea, but one that didn't work out.
I personally prefer the H5 sort of heroes. Mostly passive, but with abilities and an attack.

8000+ liches - obviously, cloak of undead king plus expert necromancy. Even better, necro specialist (Isra).
2500+ demons - pit lords raising demons. Gogs, dogs, ogres, orcs, dwarves, even dendroids were converted into demons.
400+ ghost dragons - converting hydras and green dragons from fortress and rampart towns and external dwellings plus diplo too.

Yeah, if I remember correctly, 2 is mostly praised for its cohesive art style and operatic soundtrack; 4 for its story (just like >>6072643 mentioned) and inclusion of things like caravans and being able to move creatures independent from your hero or have more than one hero in a single party (reminiscent of AoW) and 6 was praised for diversifying its encounters by adding boss creatures.

As a side note, I also liked that almost every creature in 6 had some sort of an ability and I was also a fan of the reputation system because I like to roleplay as a moralfag (see Mass Effect). And also snakewaifus.

Hota Dev here (have a cool picture as a proof)
Same guy who trolled you with evil hobbits town a while ago in fact. This time telling you the truth, while trying not to spoil shit too much:

- Major work on the addon was suspended for the whole summer and half of the autumn. We've resumed only by the mid autumn
- I hate the atmosphere of the "secrecy" we have here. Feels like folks are thinking if something leaks and the world will end. There are plans to make articles revealing more info but I feel Factory itself will go live faster than this articles are written.
- The promised "summer" patch with wasteland terrain is aimed to be released on new year. It's much bigger than planned (and not only because the actual amount of job to make wasteland good is larger than we anticipated) and will have some long-wanted changes as well as balance changes. If all goes according to plan ofc.
- The factory itself advanced greatly in past 2 months. All units but one have 3d models and animations. Tier 7 creature looks fucking amazing in my opinion.
- Townscreen has almost all buildings but some still waits for remodeling from the scratch.

Factory will arrive to hota and pretty soon, don't worry!

incredibly useful if you consider speed and sequence, for example let's say you have a unit with speed 10 and everyone on enemy team has less speed than that, you can wait with your unit and after enemy used up all of their turn you can use the 10 speed unit to attack and you will instantly start next turn first so you get to either attack again or cast a spell or whatever
common tactic in heroes is to use a powerstack of strong and fast units and use it to one shot enemy stacks so they don't retaliate and wait command is one of the best ways to abuse that

I imagine Docent must really be protective of his and other people's work. I just really hope the balance changes are good and doesn't change too much. Will also be interesting to have a new terrain that doesn't have a native faction - for now.

Is it possible that maybe we'll get some of the Factory units as neutral units first (kind of like with Halflings) in the updates before the Factory release? This coupled with wastelands would help us - mapmakers - a lot with coming up with new good maps before the Factory release.

You're not a regular game dev studio so I'm not even sure why you bother with secrecy, writing articles or whatever else Docent_Picolan (aka "Resistance in HotA is now Shatter Magic from H5 because I don't like RNG in my RNG game" dude) is trying to do on HeroesCommunity - people who know about and still play HoMM3 are almost certainly going to be aware of your existence, for better or worse.

I doubt anyone here is worried. Just be semi-realistic with your assessments or upfront with admitting that you underestimated how long it would take you to make a new terrain/faction and you won't catch any flak for it.

>>6074875
>what about 5?

You mean what do people praise V for? I'd say it's the entire package. It's obvious that V isn't a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination:
- story is hot garbage;
- uninspired, generic or overdone aesthetics (pic related);
- 3D graphics, although solid for their time, didn't age that well;
- the way skills/abilities interact or build upon each other isn't explained anywhere;
- lack of random map generators (AFAIK) limited the replayability significantly;
- the few dozen man-made maps that were available are generally considered to be too constrictive and AI is far more A than I (and takes an eternity to finish their turn)
...

However, it's also obvious that this game was made by people who liked the previous installments of the franchise and wanted to improve upon it:
- Necromancy and OP spells such as Slow, Haste and Town Portal got revamped (others would say nerfed);
- heroes were more than statboosters and spellcasters (as in I, II & III) but weren't so OP that they could win a battle on their own (IV);
- what used to be nearly or totally useless skills were boosted (Learning aka Enlightenment also gave you stat bonuses as well as boost in exp gained) or at least weren't as disruptive (ending up with a shit skill like Eagle Eye aka Arcane Intuition was now a two-step process - first you had to possess Enlightenment and then you had to be so unlucky that EE was the best choice out of the 4 skills offered at level-ups);
- alternate upgrades (added in ToE) allowed for some flexibility in creating your army;
- caravans (present in IV and re-added in HoF) eliminated daisy-chaining;
- 3D town screens
...

You anons are welcome to add anything else I forgot to mention in these two lists or even re-arrange them as you see fit (i.e. you see something I mentioned to be an improvement as being bad and vice versa)

> I imagine Docent must really be protective of his and other people's work.
While this, it's impossible to underestimate Docent's impact on Hota.
Simply laying it out: No Docent = No hota. It's a project of passion for him and he do A LOT of job for it:
recruiting, music, 2d refining for ALL objects on map, 2d refining for units, concept arting and many more tasks.
Hell, apart from rough 3d models of mountains, lakes and trees entire landscapes of Highland and Wasteland are done by him.

Speaking of recruiting, Alex-ander (who modeled entire Cove with all units) isn't as active as back in those days. He still has made 1-2 units for Factory, but most of 3d stuff is now on shoulders of a several artists (including me) - both old-timers and talented newcomers. So our rate of progression vary. Wouldn't be a lie to say there are 3 times more people working on Factory than on Cove.

>Is it possible that maybe we'll get some of the Factory units as neutral units first (kind of like with Halflings) in the updates before the Factory release?
Absolutely not. And even in my opinion, unnecessary. This is my estimate only, but I hope Factory will be completed pretty soon after new year update. Unless.. you know, We'll scrap all content and start over :)

> What's with the chromatic aberration?
I'm fooling around. Had to make it look like an old photo.
Btw 4-chan exclusive content!

>Any particular reason as to why?
Because we all have lives and hota isn't generating any money. Docent mentioned this a few times in articles. It's pretty usual to halt development at summer for us. Nothing out of ordinary.

Art-wise.

Some people (including myself when I was younger) may think that collecting an army from dwellings deepens the tactical gameplay (e.g. the Tier 7 and three 5 dwellings are few days away from your Capitol but are on opposite sides so you have to optimize how you can get these units the quickest while still doing shit around the map instead of just pressing 'Send caravan button'). Now I just see that as QoL improvement that can also give the retarded AI a fighting chance if you choose to ignore it yourself.

I played 2 and Shadow Magic. They were enjoyable, but my buddy that introduced them to me said they were the "next Master of Magic", and I didn't think they got that good. Gameplay got a bit repetitive, and it was far too easy to defend cities with masses of ballistae, which IIRC any race could build.

Still, the games were neat, and the AI was reasonably good. I have some fond memories of that game, especially a fight in which 2 Orc Warlords with the Vampiric ability held off an absolutely huge horde of lower tier enemy troops and emerged battered but victorious at like 8:1 odds against.

Let's say you have a Gold mine protected by Lots of Gargoyles and your main hero, Crag Hack, has your entire army and is 3 days away from getting to put a flag on the resources. 3 days is a lot of time just getting to your destination, and your army is unlikely to take debilitating losses in the engagement, so it's a chore.

However, let's say you also have Yog and Rashka on the route to said Gargoyles. Let's also assume Crag Hack is standing a full day's worth of travel away from Yog, who is standing a full day's worth of travel away from Rashka. Crag Hack can move to Yog, transfer all the troops and artifacts to him. Then Yog repeats the process with Rashka. Rashka uses his movement points to conquer the Gargoyles and flag the mine.

Crag Hack, Yog and Rashka in this example formed a chain, doing a route that would take 3 days in only one day. It will take another day to return the units back to Crag, but he will still have full movement points. Rashka and Yog are also liable to pick up any other minor stacks littering the road while they're travelling with Crag's army.

Hardcore chaining has you hire 8 hero chains spanning huge distances and allowing every single bit of the chain to conquer a little bit of your land, making it extremely efficient for exploration and expansion.

If you're a total noob, though, just make sure that you have at least a few heroes and have them rotate mundane tasks and try small examples of chaining. Don't have your main hero chasing after every single little Goblin stack just to pick up a Gem Pond - let your secondary heroes borrow the army and do the same! Movement speed is very precious and trying to hero solo everything is just too slow.

And definitely do learn to gather your money through conquest. Try going Rampart / Ivor, upgrade Elves as fast as possible (Day 1, if you can!) and go as aggressive as you can muster! Savescum and practice fighting against AI forces with Elves and Centaurs.

Don't run back and forth every week to buy new recruits in town with your main hero, use secondaries spaced ~1 day between each other so they can transfer new units from town to your main instantly. Don't worry about that right now, just make sure they're spanning a decent distance for now. Any movement points left after you're done can always be used to pick up a resource off the floor or reposition slightly, so you don't have to be too anal about it.
Remember that when you pick a destination that is too far away (some arrows are "red") a tiny number next to the horsey icon will tell you how many turns it would take you to reach the place assuming nothing changes (as >>6084763 points out movement speed on the map depends on the speed of your slowest unit in the army, so an army with 20 archangels and 1 skeleton moves much slower than an army with 20 archangels alone).

It was... the way I originally designed it was, I made the Underground, and I think it was Heroes III it first appeared... a lot of our maps ran out of room for little treasure caches. So I said well, I could make this little Underground, you could go down and there would be a little bit bigger of an area where I could actually have a little treasure cache based where you were. The big maps it made sense, but the mapmakers went wild and turned it into an entire... thing, and now we had two maps instead of one, and it kind of went in a diredction it wasn't intended to.

>CH: So are you planning on doing an alternative system to the Undergound, or just keeping it a single-layer map?

This is exactly why its inferior imo.

Underground that is not just small passages works fine on really tightly paced and controlled custom maps (Unleashing the Bloodthirsty style of map), but on random or regular maps, it just doubles the map size, which in practice mostly adds tedium (again on non good hand made maps).

I think the strength of the Underground is where you put small pockets here or there on the map on places with little traffic, put a fuck you strong guard, and have it as a little bonus area where you have to return to later, and not as another plane.

Even a lot of great handmade maps don't feature no Underground (and of course all Heroes II maps), so its not like it adds something unique, a good map maker doesn't even need to use it, or can work around it to have the same effect, and I like it when things are incorporated on one plane better, its more immersive.

So its just bloat that gets misused most of the time to make the game more tedious and less immersive. Its a tool that empowers lazy designers to make worse maps.

>> No.6086807

>>6086798
So in summary, its a good element in theory, where if used for small things or map tricks it can be useful and good, but because of human nature its gets misused and overall just makes maps worse.

>> No.6086813

>>6086807
Also also, without the Underground map makers have to be more considerate of the limited space they have, usually making each zone of the map better, where with an Underground which magically doubles the map size, especially if its done just out of a need to have an "impressive" + U map, the average quality of each zone suffered.

Design by subtraction/minimalism is key in making good anything games related, and Underground flies in the face of that.

If the game will go long go Necro
Or if you have HotA installed then Conflux is much harder to play (though still high tier)
It's hard to tell from context because Conflux doesn't really have relevant weaknesses (shit tier 4 and 5 don't matter if you can take on multiple dwellings no one else can do day 1, poor ability to wage resurrection wars doesn't matter if your army is bigger and better and you aren't fighting really late)

East Asian mythology remains relativley untouched in HoMM. Would be a great theme for a town. As I got to thinking about it, I started having fun with the ideas. Japan has the most variety of mythological creatures, China has a decent amount, but the rest of the countries have very little or they share them with China. Asian mythology is somewhat different from western and middle eastern in that almost all of them are either harmless, mischievous, or indirectly affect humans like with fortune, luck, disease, etc... so the choices are more limitted. I'll list some examples of creatures of how it could look. When I list special abilities, it doesn't necessarily mean the unit would have all of them, I'm just throwing ideas.

Chinese Dragon
Description: The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it. Just as water destroys, they said, so can some dragons destroy via floods, tidal waves, and storms.
Special Abilities: FLying, +2 luck to allied units, can cast water attack spells (similar to fairy dragon ranged attack)

Datsue-ba
Description: An old woman who sits at the Sanzu river, the crossing to the afterlife, who removes clothes (or skin if unclothed) of the dead.
Special Abilities: Lowers defense of clothed units, increased attack against unclothed units?

Jubokko
Description: A yokai tree that entangles it's victim and sucks out their blood. A jubokko branch could heal an injured person.
Special Abilities: Vampirism, can cast sacrifice on itself.

Pixiu
Description: Resembling a strong, winged lion, the Pixiu is said to go out into the world in search of gold and other forms of wealth and, bringing it home to its Master. Though it has wings, they are too small to give lift to its body.
Special Abilities: Dwelling increases gold mine output by 50%, crystal and gem by 100%, immune to misfortune

(continued)
Gashodokuro
Description: Spirit taking the form a giant skeleton formed from amassed bones of people who died in battle. Some claim they are indestructible.
Special Abilities: Life drain, can cast shield on itself (level corresponds to hero's wisdom)

Jorogumo
Description: A ghost that has transformed into a beautiful spider woman that manipulates small fire-breathing spiders.
Special Abilities: Ranged attack up to two hexes away if clear line of sight. Something akin to fire shield or death stare?

Onibi
Description: Spirits of the resentful dead that have become small floating orbs of fire. While they don't emit burning heat, they suck out the life from their victims.
Special Abilities: Flying, immune to fire spells

Tikbalang
Description: The ghost of an aborted fetus that has transformed into a humanoid horse. Lures its victims into the forest before devouring them.
Special Abilities: ???

Fenghuang
Description: Reigning over all other birds, the Fenghuag is often said to hide during times of trouble, but it also appears to mark the beginning of a new era. With it's wings spread, it attacks with it's talons.
Special Abilities: Flying, hates serpents

Kappa
Description: A humanoid frog and turtle like creature that dwells in bodies of water. Though often relatively harmless, doing michievous things like peeking up women's skirts. They have a darker side; drowning, eating, and raping.
Special Abilities:

dwarves that live in Moria and mine shit in a volcano was overdone by the time Warcraft did it and when Ubisoft did it it was just stupidly glib
One of the strengths of HoMM that was discarded over the years is that factions often consist of wildly different creatures that are only sort of loosely connected with a theme so when Ubisoft went with monoracial factions for each one it felt boring and dumb, like a creativity black hole.
If you really want a northern faction, there's room for it, something Viking-like maybe, but without necessarily DUDE MORIA LMAO

Why not inhabitants of Vori? According to the lore, three creatures lived there - Snow Elves, Frost Giants and Azure dragons - so you could have a mix of these creatures along with polar bears, arctic wolves etc. One HotA member joined one of the older threads to say that they intend to make a northern-like faction but that it won't be composed out of 'random snow dwarves with no place in the universe':

Eador Genesis, the old but still up updated 2d sprite game, is amazing and rivals homm3.

The pitfalls of Eador's popularity are the new 3d graphical versions are bulky and slow, also most of the games have a default difficulty similar to impossible on homm (one of the main mechanics of the game specifically encourages save-scumming), it has a very long repetitious campaign.

idk the Russian devs that still work on that game understand what makes these tilers fun.
