I'm going to pick up the first Phantasy Star on the Switch pretty soon. Despite this, I'm still gonna emulate the 4 classic games with ROM hacks. I know to play the first game in a jap rom with the English patch and FM music, but there are multiple hacks of the other titles that feature good general improvements. What are the best rom hacks for 2-4?

i really enjoyed playing the remakes for the ps2. They have better graphics and sounds. The hard-mode rom-hacks are absolutely absurd and near impossible unless you want to grind your dick down to a shriveled stump by the time you're 50.

There's a partial retranslation of 2 that uses the US release as the base. It's a bit half arsed but it does make the game more consistant naming-wise with the rest of the series and gives a bit of extra NPC dialogue and such. It doesn't work on real hardware but if you're emulating it's a better choice than the vanilla rom. Nothing really for 3 and 4.

3 and 4 have retranslations. 3's is good but 4 was odd to me that they use Chaz's original name (Rudy) but didn't do the same for Alys (Lyra).

Its grammar is fine but there are many pointless changes. That said, I don't think I like what I've seen of the retranslation. It seems to just make stuff up and insert dumb out of place jokes? Is there anybody who has given it a proper playthrough willing to comment?

seem to imply this isn't really all that better. Frankly it sounds like that BOF2 retranslation were it's more out of the creators ego. If you want to retranslate something retranslate 3. It needs it way more.

I fucking hate hardmode hacks. If I wanted an extra challenge I'd run some battles here and there and maybe attempt to beeline to my destination to keep me underleveled deliberately, but there's content meant to be cleared at specific levels and making me spent more time to get that level is retarded.

Instead download the fan translations of the PS2 versions of 1 and 2 they're fantastic remakes. Either install them to your PS2's HDD or emulate them. They're in the Sega Ages 2500 collection

what the fuck guys, just emulate the MD originals, jesus christ. they are simple, fun and grindy games, the remakes don't add anything to the experience other than utterly revolting artwork, you're best off sticking with the 16 bit charm of the originals.

Being able to bring my wife Nei back to life to get a slightly different ending doesn't change the fact that the ps2 remakes are soulless low budget shit with bad redesigns from the PSO artist. Not to mention the hoops you have to go through to get her back.

the first on the switch is great. use the automap for dungeons and set the encounter rate down with higher xp earnings per battle.

i just beat 4 two weeks ago. you don't need anything. just play it raw. it's relatively easy but the rng can be annoying with enemy encounter rate.

Played this for the first time on Switch recently as I’ve never had any Sega systems. I quite liked it, it’s simplistic in a pleasing way and worked nicely as a handheld game. Automapping was supremely appreciated. Considering throwing a Genesis emulator on my Wii and playing IV, people seem to speak highly of it.
