I'll be honest, their lack of communication their is infuriating, it's a free project so I'm not going to bitch too hard, but they seriously need to work on their communication skills.

Living? as far as I'm aware the project is completely free of charge, they don't even have a patreon.

As far as I'm aware their were 2 teams working on Sakura wars, one for the pc version one for the saturn, earlier in the year they folded their work together to focus on the Saturn release.

The majority of the work being done over the last few weeks was the same guy who is doing the Grandia Saturn translation, he had to develop some tools to re encode the video files with subtitles, as well as patch the translation into the minigames.

There is no point in getting mad over something offered for free as a fan project, they don't owe you anything and it's their time that they're offering you.

Is that even a translation? Isn't it just a simple copy paste job from the PS1 release?

Honestly, I don't even know why they're doing the Saturn release of ST. It's the worst version, the DC and PC versions have better resolution, and the PS2 version is a great remake with ST3 style combat.

>There is no point in getting mad over something offered for free as a fan project
I'm not getting mad about it, all I'm saying is that I'll believe it when I see it, and it's just funny to me that you're this eager to believe a known liar and bullshit merchant. Were you not around a few weeks back when this same dude did a Twitter countdown?

He's taking the existing Grandia translation and patching it into the Saturn release, but it's not a copy and paste job, it's quite in involved process.

The countdown was bullshit, though, I have no idea what that was about. I do agree, be sceptical, I'm just saying don't write it off completely either as there are others that have played the release and can account for it being basically complete.

Would English patch be a better term then? While I admit using the PS1 translation gave me a jump start, there is a little more involved than a simple copy and paste. I could go into details here but it's probably better to just link the SegaXtreme topic which has acted as a sort of dev blog:
https://segaxtreme.net/threads/translating-grandia.24330/

As for Sakura Wars, I just came onboard to help in a few areas where they needed help (encoding FMVs, getting the English script to work in the mini games while still looking nice, etc.)

Which if you want an example of the level of detail and effort I put into those, here's an example of how I handled the Next Episode previews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B-ey_iBHmI

>> No.6062838

>>6062825
Yeah, English patch is a better fit. I'm not trying to say your job is easy or anything, maybe simple gives the wrong impression, I just meant "easier than starting from scratch" rather than "the process of copying the text into the game is simple".

I'm not the biggest fan of the Next Episode font, but that's some pretty nice work otherwise. You're also missing the pulsing of the letters to the beat and the slow zoom to finish it off, that might be why it feels a little off. I doubt anyone playing it in English will notice though.

Culture moves in waves even on the small scale. You're statistically more likely to have bought this series now for the same reason OP was statistically more likely to post this thread now. It's cause and effect and you're not immune to it. The main thing to take away from this occurrence is that you are much more similar to other people than you think.

Here's an example. Popular thing leads to contrarianism. That contrarianism leads to contrarianism of contrarianism. So on and so on. People think they're being original but really they've simply gone from step A to step B. Human thinking patterns are linear, which is why Mexicans love Mexican music, they didn't decide to love it, it was a simple step forward based on culture. You and OP have similar cultures and therefore are bound to criss cross in interests, such as your love for retro gaming. Something to think about is how many people had to have come to this Cross road at the same exact time but didn't post about it. Thus it can be reasonably concluded that you aren't as unique as you think you are and are a giant faggot because it's all a incalculable coincidence and we'll all be dead soon why are you wasting your life on 4chan just like me? Someone offered to translate the title screen at the last second. So we figured why not try and get it working.

I personally would rather try and put out something that's as high of quality as possible. So if something comes up, no matter how last minute, that would improve the quality I'm definitely going to try and get it in, even if it means delaying things.

It's not like we're a real company here, we don't have any real deadlines we have to meet.

This reeks of someone who can't actually read Japanese, but understands the basic concepts of how the language works.
I'm literally a professional translator, and unless you grew up in a bilingual household the grind to learn Japanese is a huge time sink. 10 years in and I'm still learning stuff on a regular basis.

Telling people to learn a language with a fairly complex character set (you know damn well I'm not referring to kana there) and a lot of very weird phrases like they're going to learn it in 20 hours is hilarious. Have fun roleplaying on 4chan though

Japanese is hardly a time sink, although I don't have any other languages to compare it to. My reps take about 10 minutes a day, and then I can spend the rest of my day just reading and watching shit in nip.

Now, I could understand the art of translation being a time sink, I've only done a few amateur projects for a laugh here and there, but coming up with proper English phrasing and functional equivalents is the brunt of the work, and that does take a fair bit of time. But just reading? Sure, there's the occasional thing to look up depending on what you're reading, but it doesn't ever feel like a time sink.

I think everyone should learn nip if they're remotely interested in Japanese entertainment. Works are vastly improved when you don't have to deal with all the baggage that comes with translation, and the additional options are mindblowing. It's not going to take you 20 hours, but compared to other hobbies, like music and drawing, it feels like much easier going.

Good god, that VA work is bad. I'm kind of tempted to boot it up just to tear it apart, but I can't be bothered setting up a Saturn emulator in this day and age. Maybe in a year or so when I feel like checking out the audio dramas and can't be bothered hooking my console up.

>> No.6073964

Thanks for the suggestion, but swapping a bunch of bios in and out didn't seem to work like I hoped. I messed with a LOT of shit in my mednafen.cfg file and can't remember all of what it was in order to reduce input lag as much as possible, so I think something there might be why. iirc one of the options affected how FMVs were processed, so I think it has something to do with that. I just did a vanilla download of mednafen specifically for this, and it's running like a charm.

Any good Bin/Cue rip (including ones you do from your own discs) should work. Remember you need to extract the data track and patch that, not the BIN file.
