The beginning of Flynn's run where he spent most of his time fixing Penders' mistakes was kino.

Yep he did this a lot of times. i remember him doing the same with Dr. Finitevus who at this point was just some nameless echidna that died from the chaos siphon experiment and instead he probably became one of the only memorable Echidna villains thanks to Ian Flynn and probably the biggest fuck you to Penders' shitty lore. However I am pretty sure he made Fiona attracted to Anti-Sonic specifically because he thinks Tails having a love triangle was gross, he said it numerous times in interviews.

Not sure if it was Penders that came up with the leather jacket thing, I think it was just part of the cheesiness of the early 90s run, but yeah. Penders ran him to the ground and even insistuated some creepy shit a few times (like Anti-Sonic fucking Bunnie) because he had some weird obsession with having characters get cucked in the comic and weird sex shit. Agreed, probably the reason why Scourge is far more recognizable than Anti-Sonic. Scourge has a far more memorable personality whereas Anti-Sonic was just your run of the mill comic relief villain.

I just started rereading the series recently, it strikes me that Penders was both a blessing and a curse to the series. It seems that without Penders' involvement, the comic may have always stayed in the negative continuity, comedic story of the day type mold, and there would still be fun in that, but I like continuity and a more serious tone better. I'm up to the first couple issues where Penders is writing solo and Spaz has just entered the picture, and it feels fresh and exciting and interesting. The comic went from "let's goof around with joke villain Robotnik haha" to "Robotnik is a serious threat and we're kind of in a rough situation here and should be taking this a lot more seriously" within literally like two issues. It's pretty bizarre. I think the Penders run would have gone a lot better if they didn't let him off his leash. When he became totally in charge of writing, the series went to the shits pretty quickly. If only they had a Kevin Feige-type figure keeping him under control so he couldn't do anything THAT stupid... well, I guess we'll never know.

Early Penders isn't that bad. It's not until you reach the Dark Legion/Chaos Knuckles shit that's when things get awful. Not to mention the reason early Penders wasn't that bad was because a lot of writers were interfering with their own ideas at the time that contradicted Penders' Mary Sue ideas (such as some of the writers making Tails the chosen one instead of Knuckles, which felt more interesting because Tails was an underdog character in most of the comics' run) it's partially for this reason that Penders kept trying to undermine and humiliate most of the canon characters except for Knuckles. It also helps that a lot of the early Penders issues had Spaz as the main artist which made things visually great, later issues would have Penders use his own art like pic related which was awful
By the way trust me, once you get to the Chaos Knuckles stuff, you'll be forced to take a break by your own brain losing too many brain cells. It's that bad. I am currently stuck on it because I took far too many breaks

Then he actually dies from saving Dmitri from Mammoth Mogul and then his future daughter finds out that in her timeline Knuckles was a danger that had to be put down or something. I would not try to defend early Penders. One of his first issues is the introduction of Anti-Sonic and the rest of his universe. Simple idea that's been done in a lot of series, but it's fun. So what does Penders do with it? A bunch of Beatles references. Because that's what kids in the mid-90s want. References to a band that broke up 25 years previous, instead of references to, you know, Sonic. We've already discussed how Anti-Sonic was a complete waste of a concept until Flynn fixed him.

A couple issues later, Penders introduces Robo-Robotnik, from an alternate universe where Robotnik got turned into a robot. Alright. Not a terrible idea, and the issue wasn't bad enough to make me recall what exactly happens in it, so fine. Then right after, Penders kills Robotnik, only for him to be revived in a short backup story like one issue later. I never looked into it much, but it reads very much like Penders just wanted to kill Robotnik (as later stories would show he REALLY wanted to do so he could make the series about his own unpublishable OC shit), and the editor wasn't paying attention at the time, but then noticed after it was too late and had to remind him, "Uh... Ken. You realize this comic is a licensed commercial for a video game, right? You can't just kill the main villain, especially in some unspectacular random issue." So Robotnik gets brought back like it's no big deal, thanks to the help of Robo-Robotnik. Only Penders forgot the backstory he gave to Robo-Robotnik only two issues earlier, resulting in later writers trying to justify it by saying that this is actually a completely different character, Robo-Robotnik II, if you will, and the original Robo-Robotnik was simply never spoken of after his first, and clearly accidentally, only appearance.

Basically yes but in story it's explained that rather than dying, he was actually zapped to another dimension. That was back when Penders writing Sonic was more of the gag stuff. I meant arcs like Endgame were actually rather decent despite having some glaring flaws. Of course early Penders was still mediocre/bad, but it was arguably eons better then Dark Legion + Chaos Knuckles boogaloo

IIRC Penders wanted him replaced with some shitty villain called Doctor Proton. I remember reading that issue where he appeared. It was awful. He had Mulder and Scully appear (with shitty traced art too) and act completely OOC and just it felt like Penders throwing as much 90s references as possible. Really the few issues where early Penders was tolerable but still medicore,as I said
