Being someone who never had a gaming pc growing up I missed out on quake. About 3 weeks ago someone gave me a copy of RadQuake for dreamcast to play and I absolutely love it. Usually I don't. I make folders with the port and the wad I want on an individual basis. So mostly Ill put a mod and whatever wads I wanna play with it in a new folder with the sourceport required.

Or, I make a folder with the name of the sourceport if Im just playing vanilla.

But... if Im using PrBoom+ I'll use ZDL3. Because PrBoom+ is jank as fuck.

Probably the boringest thing ever, but I replaced the main menu with a new class defined in zscript (using the ZForms library) rather than menudef. It's far from finished obviously.

I've been playing some Serious Sam lately.
It was pretty fun at first with its incredibly straightforward gameplay but started to feel like a chore after a while.
It feels like the level layout hardly ever has any impact on the combat since most levels just consist of a couple of huge areas that you go through one after another. To keep things interesting despite this the game keeps throwing more and more enemies at you in the most annoying ways.
Maybe I'll finish it some other time but right now I feel pretty burnt out by it.
It doesn't help that the game has just about no art direction and the Egypt theme gets pretty boring after a while.

Serious Sam is like mowing the lawn with gatling guns, quite relaxing and enjoyable. Occasional nice tunes too. Skub/10 divisive series.
Painkiller is like a completely braindead Quake 1 but with UT weapons. The tarots can go fuck themselves and so can bonus levels, soundtrack has a couple banging tunes too. Great enemy and environment variety. 7/10 breddy good.

Serious Sam is more about big open areas where enemies spawn in and you have to backpedal and sidestep while holding down M1. There's not so much a focus on the level design or enemies being pre-placed in the maps, which puts some people off. And I think this is exacerbated by the game being considered by some to be a "retro FPS throwback" despite not having much in common with those games.

I don't think I've really seen people compare Nudoom to Serious Sam, and I don't know why anyone would. The arenas in the game have verticality and the Glory Kill gimmick requires the player to get up close to what they're shooting.
I've seen more people compare it to Painkiller, and they may be right, though I've never gotten around to playing it so I wouldn't know.

It's more because it works with iterations, and should be like the following:

Serious Sam > Painkiller > Doom 2016

In terms of one establishing gameplay rules and the others filtering it, Serious Sam gameplay is messy and doesn't quite balance well, who else could think in absolutely throw the most annoying enemy ever? FUCKING KLEERS!

But then in Painkiller everything is way more balanced, you can literally ride almost the entire game only with the Shotgun because you don't need specific weapons for the hordes, all of them can deal with all enemies, and none of them are enough slow to be discarded (i'm looking at you SS Double Barrel).

Doom 2016 is the last iteration in such case, you basically shoot the fuck outta everyone in the lockdown room and if you need ammo just Chainsaw some bitch, bonus if you do Raven Software's weapon combo on enemies so you can literally disintegrate their health.

Owned Painkiller for ages but played through it fully recently, it was pretty awful. You go faster than every enemy by far and they have windup on melee attacks so 50%+ of the roster is harmless. The rest can't lead targets and get stuck on every piece of terrain they can find. Any hp sponge bar bosses can be 2 shot by the shotgun combo and you don't even have to be close. The biggest threat is falling damage in one of the boss fights if you don't use the card to be totally immune. Some areas are huge, but it doesn't matter because enemies won't aggro far away and your projectiles cover less than a 1/3 of the area before disappearing anyway. It plays like a low budget Serious Sam where the monsters pose no threat.

Guns are nice though. You only get 5 but they're all basically 2 guns in one. Pinning shit to walls is always good for a laugh.

The thing is, developers themselves compared Serious Sam to Doom at the time.
Except they didn't mean it in the game-design sense.
They meant it in a "not in accordance to modern expectations from FPS" - it was a primitive shooter with rudimentary plot - just go there and shoot a lot of monsters, made at a time where every FPS was expected to have a narrative.
Game magazines misconstrued it and ran it with "oldschool, just like Doom!" taglines.

SS (and Painkiller by extend) really are more of a Smash-TV clone - go into locked arena, kill things untill all things are dead, proceed to next arena, get locked in nuntill everything is dead and so on.

The problem is that it all has gone full circle and now Doom developers when thinking of "oldschool" go back to Painkiller instead of the original.

When doing transformations, set the interpolation like in pic related. I reckon that's how they did it. I don't know of a specific setup that turns anti-aliasing off completely. Unless you work in Indexed mode, but that's quite limited.

BFE added reloading to Serious Sam and that should be some sort of crime. I think with Doom Eternal, the devs really tried to have actual level designs in the game. You can see this from the Qcon 2018 demo, where there were no arenas at all and the levels were more open. They were less linear compared to Doom4 (which is not saying much but a step in the right directions). Now you look at the Qcon 2019 demo, they have taken a step back and now the game has arenas. So my guess is that there will be a mix of open and arena based level design in Doom Eternal. Probably It would be an open set area filled with demons and arenas in alternation.

I use Gimp and it's fine. It's layer system is fuckstupid, but when you get used to it it's all muscle memory. It has a few less layer effects out of the box but there's a lot of plugins available for it.
Photoshop is better, but you have to crack it. Not that it's difficult. I just switched to Gimp because I hate photoshops business practices and near monopoly on the professional market.
Gimp does a few things better than Photoshop. Interface wise it's a bit worse. Overall it's fine.

In Doom each level is an enclosed location, that you have to explore over the course of the playthrough.
In Doom level progression thanks to Romero's "show the Door first, give key later" ensures that player will revisit old areas to gain access to new areas. Good maps also revitalise visited areas with new enemies and pickups at that point.
In certain ways this is similar to how Metroid progression works, but in smaller scale.
Exploration and learning the level is the key to finishing the levels, enemies are an obstacle, but they are only part of the whole.

In Serious Sam and by extension Painkiller, exploration is never part of the equation, and thus the game is more primitive and less interesting as a result.

One thing I love about Serious Sam is the deterministic nature of its gameplay. I don't have to guess if a kleer is going to hit me for 20 or for 80 damage like a revenant would, I know it's always 20 on a ball, 40 on a leap. I don't have to bank on RNG giving me enough damage on a shotgun to one shot a chaingunner, it's always 7 pellets with 10 damage each.

I don't use Rocket Launcher, but if it's a launcher worth a damn, then it ought to have a field for additional command line parameters. Put -deh with the path to the .deh file there. Either can be terrible, or great.

I think that being able to easily produce your own content for a game will give it stronger longevity, particularly if you can actually do more than just levels or shallow visual mods, like putting in your own resources, maybe even writing your own entities.
It gives fans a particularly suitable medium to express their love and ideas around the original.

Doom has a long history with usermade content, and it's interesting how gradually it has grown, from just hex editing a little map which can't even be played because there wasn't a way to compile it yet, to shareware third party level editors, to DeHacked and DeuSF, Doom 2, Final Doom, and then you eventually have the source code release, which is such an incredibly valuable asset to any modding community.

It started tiny, and it's just kept snowballing. Quake and Half-Life had similar growths as well, and even had new IPs and commercial games grow directly out of their modding scenes.
I really just love moddable 90s shooters, they're just so fucktastic.

Crispy should be in the same folder as the wads if you want that shortcut to work.

If you want this to work with Rocket Launcher though, I found that pic related works.

Rocket Launcher doesn't know what to do with deh files, so you're supposed to explicitly include it using that command. In my setup, batman.deh is in the same folder as crispy doom, that's important for this setup to work.
If you want it in a different folder, you'll have to figure out a relative path or absolute path to the deh file.

While using the primary fire, don't ever focus the beam directly on monsters, unless it's a revenant or an arachnotron. Instead focus the beam on walls or the ground near things you want to die.
Make sure to crouch or brace your weapon on walls for the much needed stability, if you're recently coming down from using your medikit and you're trembling too badly, I don't recommend using the primary fire. Carry another weapon with you, the Thunderbuster is fun mode but it demands a lot of respect.

It's basically a AI generated text adventure, you start with a prompt and input commands from there, you can even set you own custom prompt with the 4th option.
The AI only remembers the prompt and the last 8 interactions, so you need to be descriptive and remind it whats going on from time to time, seems to work best in second person.
Avoid asking it definitive question, seems to work better if you leave it open to make stuff up on the fly.

i can see some good intention with trying to bring classic doom wads (and nothing else to a certain degree like zdoom based mods) to consoles but i swear, id should try actually getting in touch with the fans that know this stuff
also, how is it going to work?
specific selections of some wads or an attempt at compatibility for any wad?
what about the use of textures from other games or music or different copyrighted stuff?
what about maps that may be too much for some consoles to handle, like most overdetailed maps or slaughter heavy ones?
one of the appeals of doom modding is breaking limits when possible until you reach a road block and take a while to beat it

It looks to be that they're basically curating what to add and the additions will effectively "turn" the game into that wad for the duration, akin to reloading the port with a new PWAD in store. But that's just my guess seeing as D1 owners will be able to play the Final Doom / D2 related wads.

The ports may not be perfect, but they'll have the most content of all the ports at this rate and still be better than most of the console ports period. The pc/PS4/Xbox/switch ports are getting 60fps, aspect ratio options and add on support.

What more are there? No Rest For The Living is about the one thing left that they own. I guess maybe they could try to retool the old Playstation sets, lord knows there's some people who'd want it.
Doom 64 has its own distinct port.

Are they just gonna like, add famous pwads or something as free downloads? That would be pretty cool, but I can imagine there's some rights issues with that, many contain copyrighted content, and some authors aren't available to ask for consent.

Like say they add Alien Vendetta as a free optional download, that would be fucking cool, but doesn't it have some Duke Nukem .midis in it, among other things? And how will they secure permission from the authors in that case? The guy who made Misri Halek is outright dead, so that's either a seance or contacting his estate.
Maybe they could add DTWID and D2TWID, those are basically all stock resources, and I think all the guys involved could probably still be contacted.

I'm probably overthinking it, but like I struggle to imagine what's next.
