I'm surprised how well the models held up for Jetforce Gemini. On a crt it could pass as early PS2 in some areas.

No idea why people keep praising this garbage. The game ran like ass, controlled like ass, and looked like shit. Even when it was released it was mostly ignored. No one knew how to play it, and no one cared. Never met anyone that even finished it.

And this was the point RARE decided to make graphics that look like smeared clown puke. Neon greens, purples, oranges thrown over the environments in ways that made no sense. I get that Jet Force Gemini is supposed to take place in some gay pride alien universe, but they kept the technicolor crap in DK64 and Conker's Bad Fur day too.
I remember thinking Goldeneye looked amazing at release, but RARE really went downhill after that.

Super Mario 64 was how you make a colorful game for N64. Jet Force Gemini was like running that through a shitty HDR photo filter.

No way in hell this would even pass for a first gen PS2 game. The models are standard low poly N64 stuff, but still manage to animate worse than any other notable game on the system.

Not hardware enforced at all and could be turned off by developers, except the scaling of 320x240 to 620x240 when in 240p mode. Arguably the screen filtering done in many PS2 is much worse anyway because it's all cheap software-based solutions.

Yeah, I think a few developers like id had a workaround. I've actually run patches on real hardware that disable this, and quickly realized why it was on for most every game. It hides all the color banding and weird artifacts - like the mall diagonal grey lines used for dithering. The N64 was much more of a mess than the PS2 for rendering.

>> No.6056803

>>6056795
Voodoo cards did the same thing. All GPUs at that time rendered in 15-bit color which has got color banding. PSX, N64 and Voodoo all do dither, but the latter two also dither filter to vaseline the equivalent of 22-bit color.

PS2 can render in 32-bit color though, but that's not always the case. There are some games that render in a lower color depth. Hell, pretty much every PS2 game that does progressive scan, how do they do it? They decrease the color depth. And if they do that, they're stuck in the very same dithering/banding hell as the N64 and all the other old 3D machines.

here's a bit of trivial, the GameCube is physically incapable of rendering anything higher than 24-bit color, and if you use destination alpha then each color only uses 6 bits (which is only 1 bit per color higher than 5th gen consoles) which is why Wind Waker has lots of banding if you look closely

PS3 was ok too... just a bad run with PS2?

Still, that machine still is the most selling machine even with that (only PS4 and soon the Nintendo Switch will come close). I had way more games on it mainly because you could finally pirate the games. I'm sure that was why many people bought a PS2 instead of other consoles early on. N64 games were just too difficult to pirate for people.
Strangely though, I spent more time on my N64 than my PS2, mainly because games like Zelda, Mario, Jetforce, Banjo, Donkey Kong, etc were just so much more fun.

PS2's hardware has a lot of quirks because its GPU is essentially an array of 16 upgraded PS1 pixel pipelines, and 8 upgraded PS1 texture units. As a consequence of that, Sony were fairly economical in how they could upgrade the PS1 pipes/units with modern features.

For example, Sony gave the PS2 mipmapping support, but did in such a half-assed way that it's basically useless, probably to save on chip space.

While the PS2 *does* have working anti-aliasing (hell, those transparent cubes you see on boot-up? they're being anti-aliased) they implemented old school edge anti-aliasing like the N64 and Voodoo used. The thing about it is that it was barely ever used on Voodoo because the performance cost is too high (it only works if polygons are manually sorted from back to front, defeating the whole point of a z-buffer). N64's GPU cleverly got around this restriction by deferring part of the AA process (actually making edge AA usable), but the PS2 didn't do that. So it got stuck with an AA feature that was too expensive to use.

I heard Summoner might actually use it, but that game has pretty bad performance and a shockingly bad draw distance (although it's not a bad game).

People focus on graphics too much. When the gameplay is impeded by them though... (which happens a lot in Skyrim which is so poorly bug checked because Bethesda can't bug check).
Look at people's opinions on fallout too, the games written outside of bethesda are considered better than the ones they made. NV had similar bugs to that era fallout bethesda games, but was superior on the game writing and gameplay.

People care about writing and gameplay over looks.

Only problem with the Xbox's video quality is that early GeForce cards had a compromised implementation of DXT1 texture compression with below-spec interpolation resulting in textures with color banding. And lots of Xbox games used DXT1 textures because the console was very memory bandwidth limited. That's one thing I've got to hand to GameCube, they actually implemented S3TC (which is basically the same thing) properly.

Ironically the only console in that entire generation which didn't compromise on image quality at all was the Dreamcast. The PowerVR2 also has pretty much perfect 32-bit -> 16-bit framebuffer dithering when that was used.
