So yesterday I played Zen Dynamics. I read in the ZDoom article about how this WAD came up as a runner up in the Cacowards and I found out why while I was playing.

Sometimes it is nice, sometimes it makes no sense at all. (MAP06 for example)

>Reloading and weird alt-attacks

I appreciate the fact that there wasn't a "simple" way to do a proper code for manual reloading and Xaser found a way for it, but it breaks the pace completely in certain parts of the game. As for the weapons, they tend to break the game (See: the Scorcher and MAP03) or be completely useless when using their alt attacks

>Monster placement

Some of them seem out of place in certain maps. And oh man don't get me fucking started with the Maelstrom (a Lost Soul variant). His attack power seems to be fairly decent at best, but what ruins it completely is the fact that IT'S A GODDAMN 8-ANGLED, FLAME-BASED, ALMOST UNDODGEABLE one. It causes a lot of infight in certain parts of the WAD, but still, it doesn't do any favor to the game at all. After reaching City of Dis I just couldn't resist and killed all of them via console

Now, let's move on to that flying black Mastermind variant. In MAP02 serves as a fairly good boss, and it's more fair to fight him since you have plenty of cover in that map; however, you get to fight him again in other parts of the game, while being in the worst of places. Oh, and I hope you get used to evade his attacks, since you get to fight three of them in MAP06

He was fully aware of the downsides of certain things (the Scorcher being one of them) so he completely removes it for the final map. Now, when reaching hell (the City of Dis), you lose ALL your weapons, why? "Well, in Doom 3 you lose them when reaching Hell, right? :P" and it gives you, FROM ALL THE WEAPONS, the dual-plasma Machine guns; and they're not exactly the best of things to use while fighting the hordes of monsters you come across in the map.

Yes, the rifle is supposed to be your main weapon and if you use it brings down the difficulty quite a bit because it's so overpowered. I hate it though and don't use it.

The pellets from the pump action shotgun come out in a horizontal line in classic Doom, giving it a really wide spread. That got changed into a smaller and round shot pattern that's more realistic but less useful. You really didn't notice that? That change really stuck out to me.

Brutal Doom requires a very specific type of map to be fun.
Maps that have have lots of enclosed space with lots of corners and LOS objects to hide behind, that don't throw too many large enemies at you at once, one or two at a time is more than challenging.
Hordes of enemies will almost always destroy you in brutal doom unless you have the BFG.

Large enemies in Brutal Doom are easy by themselves. If you're surrounded by several of them, or even say just a small room with three Hell Knights, kiss your ass goodbye.
Brutal Doom feels like it was made for the player to either take on interspersed encounters of parties of enemies with several small and one large, or lots of small enemies at once, or one or two big enemies at a time.
The wad just doesn't feel like it was made for hordes of enemies or for several big enemies at a time. The odds are simply stacked against you in those cases.

The official maps are all easy enough that - outside of a few bits of Final Doom and a couple of notorious Thy Flesh Consumed maps - there's precious little challenge to be had on anything lower than UV, especially for those of us that have been playing this stuff for the best part of 20 years. All I'd say in regard to choosing a difficulty level is that you should absolutely feel pressured when things really kick off and all hell breaks loose. If you're not getting that "Oh no. How am I going to deal with this shit?!" feeling and the accompanying rush as you overcome the odds then you're absolutely doing it wrong.

Whether that feeling comes to someone from playing Nightmare while blindfolded or from ITYTD doesn't matter a bit to me, I'd just strongly argue that if you're getting overly comfortable it's time to turn it up a level.

I fucking love Hideous Destructor. It's the kind of mod that won't hesitate to kick your shit in, but it's surprisingly fair in its difficulty. When you first start playing, you'll probably be unable to make it past the first zombieman you find. After some thousand-odd deaths, you'll start learning and eventually overcome seemingly impossible challenges. And when you do, oh man is it satisfying. To finally have every enemy figured out, every weapon mastered, to get so used to manually pumping the shotgun that you miss it when you play without HD, there's nothing really comparable.

Then you move up to Doom 2, the cycle repeats, and you get your ass kicked all over again.

It'd be pointless, since the popular source ports of today mostly aim to do entirely different things. Like (G)Zdoom goes for maximum size feature set, Zandro brings as much of that as it can to multiplayer, PrBoom goes for Boom-faithfulness and strong demo compatibility, Chocolate Doom is ultra-puritan, etc. All you'd accomplish is getting a bunch of folks to blow around hot air over opinions on the proper way to play Doom, which we don't need to go through again.

Okay, I'll give one of the servers a whirl the next time. I've never deathmatched a day in my life, so I'd probably be pretty awful at that. The most I've ever accomplished is probably completing Doom II on UV without dying, which really, isn't a big accomplishment. I died about a thousand times on Plutonia, mostly due to the surprise of how tough everything was in earlier stages.

I had that same feel today. I am relatively new to Doom, beat the Doom and Doom 2 campaign about 2 days ago on 'hey not too rough', decided to try TNT but still dont have the balls to play a higher difficulty yet. I was running through the level doing pretty good, feeling powerful and full of shit.
