How do you guys practice your 1cc for shmups?
I have this stupid mentality of resetting instead of continuing (and just resetting if I lose a live on the first stage). I'd rather say "I never saw the final level but at least I never used continues" than "I """cleared""" it with five continues."
Pic related. I managed to at least clear 3 of the initial random stages without continuing.

Are there any other games where the meat of the game is randomly selected stages of average difficulty, but by the time all the routes merge back together for the final stage, the difficulty steps all over your balls?

Credit feed to see the whole game and evaluate if it seems like a fun and interesting challenge.
Note the particularly difficult bosses/patterns/stages.

Watch some replays to see possible solutions and high level play.
If it seems like my type of shmup then I'll start doing save-state stage practice. When I feel comfortable with stages 1-3 then I do them all together and see how far I get. Then I practice stages 4 and 5+ boss until they feel okay. Then I start doing full runs. If I still hit walls I go back to stage practice. Never feel like save state practice is beneath you, it's so effective in the long run.

Resetting is fine up to a certain point, but if you are doing it too much in the same areas it probably means you should practice those areas specifically.

Any games that require high levels of execution and muscle memory along with +focus+ will have that problem. It's something you can only overcome with practice.

Gunbird first 3 stages are pretty straight forward unless you get the train section. Fuck that train.

>> No.6037557

>>6037552
The train is fine. But usually whatever the 4th stage ends up being I somehow lose my first life there and then it's just a reset fest for me. I know part of the run is seeing how many continues it takes you to finish the game and compare each of your runs but in my mind if I need to continue then I don't deserve to progress.

>> No.6037570

>>6037523

Well, think of it like weightlifting. If you only ever try to pick up what you know for sure you can lift and never train to failure, your progress is going to be a lot slower. But on the other hand, it's not going to do much good to try to deadlift 400lbs right away.

So, i think a credit or 2 is fine and helpful to get you used to more traffic, it'll make it easier to go back to the start and have it seem simple in comparison. If you're getting hit every 10 seconds after you continue though it's kinda pointless since you're obviously beyond your depth at that point

Save-state practice per stage is the fastest way, in Psikyo's case you want to practice the earlier stages at high rank.

>> No.6037698

Use savestates and practice modes, make savestates at the start of every stage and then one for the boss and play them until you can do them without dying and with no or minimal bomb use on most attempts. Do full runs in between to see your progress and get used to the pressure of real runs. In Psikyo you need to make sure you are practicing the hardest version of the random stages so reset until you get all of them.

This game looks interesting, whats the best version of it?

>> No.6037712

>>6037523
I start off just playing repeatedly and seeing how far I can get on 1 credit. I'll probably credit feed too at some point, just to see the whole game and make save states at the start of each stage and boss. If I get stuck on a tough part, I'll create a state there too and practice until I have it down. Then I'll mix save state practice with playing from the beginning until I've cleared the game.

You could always just not use any continues and maybe learn and improve your kills by playing further. That's what I most people do. You must have stage 9001 terminal autism.

Do it the same way I did when I could do it on an actual machine, a liter bottle of black cherry shasta and a saturday off from any responsibilities whatsoever. From there it just comes down to focus and dedication to wanting to clear the game.

Reminder that if you're not resetting after your first life lost you're playing wrong.

AES versions of Neo Geo games give you three continues. Most people won't be all that impressed, but you can still having more fun by limiting yourself that way, rather than treating it like you have infinite lives.

So let me get this straight. Ketsui is /vr/ retro because it was made for a 1997 pgm arcade board that is itself retro? Even though Ketsui itself was released in 2003?

I just play a game a shitton and i get a 1cc eventually

>> No.6044453

I play for score, which means 1cc comes naturally so I don't practice for 1cc exactly.

What I do though is I play with save states for 95+% of my playtime. I only do full runs (after the iniitial fun credit-feeding runs of course) when I've practiced the shit ot of a game with save states. 1 for the beginning of the level, 1 for any midbosses, 1 for end of level boss, and I'll have a bunch of them for mid level sections I have trouble with.

Save states. Save states. Save states. Save States.

That's your most efficienct way of practicing a shmup. Second most efficient is spamming training mode but I hate those because sometimes the level is easy except for 1 section halfway in and there's no training mode save point for it.

I see a lot of people doing really shitty things like playing the game until they get game over, and then just restarting so they waste 75% of their time playing through easy levels they can do in their sleep to get to an area that kills them quickly. Don't do this. It's retarded. It will take you 10x longer to 1cc a game if you play it like that.

Practice what you can't do, not what you can do.
