Good luck getting dialup modems to work above 2400bps. Even if you have a "land line" to use they're all ultimately using voip for some if not all of the transport.

There's many hundreds of MUDs. They cost practically nothing to upkeep and even by the early 2000s the remaining players were die hards and grandpas who never played any other game, and neither of those groups ever left.

https://www.mudconnect.com/ has become slightly less complete over the years but it's still a good starting point, join games and ask people about other MU*s.

You can get it to connect at 38400 but it's almost always unstable af. 9600 is okay-ish on most setups but above that goes downhill rapidly.

I played a lot of MUDs, I don't understand the connection to bulletin board systems unless you're referencing that both were usually accessed through a telnet client which is kind of irrelevant
