Why the original Silent Hill never got a modern remake like many other PS1 classics? With movie based on it bringing new fans to the series and old fans hating the American made games you'd think that would be an easy choice to please everyone.

There are even two games, Origins and Shattered Memories that feel like they have started development as SH1 remakes, but ended up going in a different direction.

For instance the Town's dark demonic undercurrent, secret drug trafficking, murder of a young woman, multiple names are taken from the show and its actors and bunch of scenes would serve as direct inspiration for a bunch of stuff. Literally one two of the Silent Hill games are American, being Homecoming and Book of Memories.

Origins and Shattered Memories are British.
Downpour is Czech.
>There are even two games, Origins and Shattered Memories that feel like they have started development as SH1 remakes, but ended up going in a different direction.
Origins was explicitly never an SH1 remake. They pretended it was an SH1 remake because Konami had plans to greenlight a remake of SH1, and Climax realised they get their game greenlit by pretending it was a remake of SH1. They were very careful to never let Konami discover the game's true nature during development, and didn't remove combat from the game until Konami ended up in internal turmoil and they could get away with it.

This is why Shattered Memories is so kino.

As for Origins, that was always a prequel. But it was originally a very different game. Climax UK only had a year to rework a completely different game into Origins, and they did a breathtaking job under the circumstances.

Adding to this, Silent Hill has a deeply fractured fanbase. Remember that the Japanese think SH2 is shit. But most SH2 fans have never played SH1.

Silent Hill has no identity beyond ripping off popular American and British horror. This has plagued its attempts to innovate and tell interesting stories. It's a vacuum of originality and purpose. Its only merit being a so-so videogame retread of stories told better by other mediums in the past. Shattered Memories was the only Silent Hill that did something actually interesting with the videogame medium Silent Hill works in. Also PT if you count that.

Gonna be interesting to see how the new Silent Hill turns out.

Agreed. Its one of the rare instances where a games technical limitations are a vital aspect of its appeal. Its a minor miracle that SH2 (and 3) managed to retain that "fear of the unknown" feeling on better hardware by using supplementary effects like film grain, better looking fog, light casting and sound design.

Its real a shame they have failed to recapture what made SH1 so gat dang scary on newer platforms but I guess there are only so many times you can reuse the same core aesthetic before a game formula gets stale and are forced to try something new.

It's obvious this is the case if you pay attention to how some people talk about SH. Someone will ask "explain how the town works" and multiple people will say "it's a magic town that attracts guilty people and etc." because they haven't played any of the other games. It really is a shame because even though I like 2 it just didn't play as well as 1 in some ways, and 1's story is just as fantastic.

I agree that is a big part of it, specifically as to how Konami has been bungling it lately (claims they cant make money with regular games anymore) but I'm talking more broadly about the visual language of modern horror games. Its hard to make something convincingly scary when it rests in an uncanny graphical valley between hyper real and abstract.

This is just my experience but when it looks too clean I have a hard time accepting the game world because it looks like everything else and any animation or texture imperfections stand out like a sore thumb when compared to the world but if the whole game looks gritty I have an easier time accepting it.

I can only think of a small handfull of games from the last 20 years that genuinely scared me and it was solely because of the games art direction and cleaver use of technology.

My guess would be most of them played SH2 first and then didn't want to adjust to what SH1 does differently. I've seen it happen with other games. Also the cult plotline seems to just make most of them go retarded and not be able to see anything else in the story, they just always sum it up as "muh cult" then go circlejerk about how SH2 is art and so deep.
