>Random advice
Don't be afraid to not have a gun perfect for every single situation. Some play styles won't mesh well with your game and players will use a gun that feels like shit if it's optimal.
If you have a shotgun (or equivalent) for any reason don't fuck it up, especially a double barrel. Old fps' have the best shotguns.

Do not do any sort of random generation in regards to levels. Making a really shitty procedural generation of levels is easy. But it will be really shit.
Making procedure generation of a 3D level that is least decent is incredibly hard, and requires a dedicated team.
Handcrafted levels is the way to go.

If you are going for low-res - always consider intended internal resolution of your game, and palette from design standpoint.
Main mistake of te indies is mixing assets of different detail density, using diferent palette limitations for different things, using lower resolution assets than the games of the period they try to mimix had actually used.

It's best to establish internal resolution and palette you are going to use at the start - same as Doom decided that 32 units/pixels is a meter, and every asset sticks to it - both sprites and textures.
You may chose a different metric, or make things more detailed, but you should keep it consistent. There are few things uglier than Commodore-tier spritework on Duke-era textures.

Dont mix styles and methods of asset creation. Rotoscoped sprites dont mix in with mspaint textures.

Do not use material effects (PBR) unless you REALLY know what you are doing, or you may end up with wood and earth textures that look like they are covered in slime (like Nightmare Reaper, or that terrible Doom PBR))
If you do want some PBR, look at how Duke World Tour did it. Use similar restraint, and if you do decide to use it, do not leave heightmap generation to automated scripts.

`IIRC there even was a code commit for the minimap into ZDoom itself.`
Yeah I recall that. I would love an official zscript-exposed version of the automap. It was/is a bit of a pain to convert the source code for it.
I also wish subsectors were exposed, because then it'd be possible to use zscript triangle drawer to draw sector floors (with textures even). Apparently exposing those would potentially lock the engine into doing things a certain way though.

Duke Nukem's realism is pretty shallow at best, you have some rooms and locations designed to look like real places, but they still take lots of liberties in design and usually are actually fucking surreal if you start thinking about how they would actually be like as living spaces or workplaces.
They're mostly open-ended non-linear maps with lots of interconnectivity, and combined with the quasi-realism, I think it's a very good combo, and it's part of the game's personality.

There's something to be said for Doom's (and Quake's) much more abstract levels though, which I'm very fond of.

>> No.6021098

>if id dinnae release the source code and good mapping tools weren't made by the community would you still be talking about doom?
Mapping tools were developed well before the source code release, and clearly because people were fond of the game and wanted to make maps for it.

Obviously the lack of source code would change everything, but Doom would still be pretty decently remembered given the maps people made, stuff like Final Doom, Memento Mori 2, Alien Vendetta, it's just fucking good mapsets based on a game which has fundamentally good gameplay already.

Speaking of rotational sprites form last thread you guys remember Shellshock? I had it on the Saturn and I loved it so much I later got the dos version.

I had some really sweet vehicle sprites, and a really comfy soundtrack and mission structure, you played as a mercenary group wreaking shit around the world, could upgrade your tank, there was a charlies angel type boss describing the missions on a nice crt screen. Was very 90s. Would be very woke today I guess.

I think it would be the base for an amazing Doom mod, gather some money from missions, now you could exit the tank and fight on foot. Like a fps master blaster.

Literally impossible due to unavoidable hitscan damage and insane hitdice-based damage randomization. Unless it's a puzzle kind of map, moreover, indanely tightly constructed, where anything other than intended solution you are meant to crack is pretty much instadeath.

In other words, why should the mapper take a hit for RNG screwing player over.

In yet other words, the more RNG game has, the lower its ceiling is for showcasing mapping mastery.

Doom, viewed from that standpoint, is

kinda unrelated, but I always interpreted the levels/everything in Quake to just be Ranger's interpretation of it.
Since it is heavily inspired by Lovecraft, it would make sense that "your mind cannot comprehend it's true form" is in play, and would also explain why shit like shotgun shells are just laying around. Ranger isn't actually using a shotgun, but a shotgun is the closest thing his mind can see it as.

>> No.6021310

Guys I just had the awesome idea for Quake level
So start of the level you spawn witj shotgun and full health before you is long straight hallway like 100 meter long with torches n shiet right
And at the end of the hallway you see portal sparkling and on each side of the hallway there are medkits, tightly placed right next to each other, all along that hallway, boyth sides of the corridor, from the very start towards its very end
When you reach that end if the hallway and take that portal you get into main part of the level, where you will start progressively noticing something very weird without first being capable to quite place it
It's not that something is out of place it's that something isn't IN place
Medkits, of which in the main level there are none
You are meant to play without getting hit anytime you do your character's health takes irrevocable hit

You only have shotgun and axe in the corridor, so you can't hurt yourself, so you can't use a single medkit while in it

If you at the start of that corridor turn around right behind you is another portal, which, when entered, finishes the level

Naturally with zeroed statistics (other than time elapsed)

Interesting theory, but I can also see a dimension of eyeless horrors quite literally building medieval citadels because they're in a neverending war with eachother whenever they're not invading other dimensions
And the slipgates themselves are like a Nine Princes of Amber situation, where one powerful being modifies reality to suit its needs, and drags anything useful through dimensions with it. Why you have mythological ogres with internal combustion powered chainsaws alongside medieval knights.

>Phobos sky works as well. I don't know why, but I really hate that brown cloudy sky in Doom 2.
The Phobos sky is by far my favorite vanilla doom sky. I have the same feelings about the Doom 2 sky. For me, it's monochromatic, overbearing browns just suck the life out of things.

Yeah, you're definitely right. I think I'm also going to make the borders pop out of the wall, to make an even stronger border. The lack of transition between the concrete and metallic texture felt extremely jarring to me, and I think it's the lack of a noticeable border that's causing it.

Considering all those years everyone and their mom played Plutonia on Zdaemon before Skulltag came out, yes. Not as much, but yes.

Duke's levels bore the fuck out of me and every level seemingly has a new mechanic, which you'd think would make it interesting but instead just makes it unintuitive. Same with other Build games like Shadow Warrior which is the worst offender. The most baffling part I remember is when you have to enter a fireplace to progress, got stuck for like 20 minutes before I found that out, and every other level had some obtuse form of progression like that.

The biggest I like Doom is because of consistency and intuitiveness for the most part, which is something good mappers share.

John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them, now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.

"They have me now," he said quietly.

Cernel Joson stood and stepped forward. "What are you doing here?"

"We're here to help. I'm going to need help to escape. If you can do that, then we can all escape. The situation will be far worse than what it is right now."

Cernel Joson stood there. "You'll need help to escape, then. I have some people that can help you. But I can't help you. I've lost too much to this place."

"Why? What happened to you?"

Why Duke Nukem 3D's episode 3 is so popular? Levels are disappointingly short, more often than not ugly, have little novelty (no new weapons, monsters, special effects), the epic progression which defined the other episodes is nonexistent, just one short half baked multiplayer arena after another. LA rumble and Freeway are good, but they make little sense as a part of your ass kicking journey.

Heres some Dook Nooky:

Duke Nukem sneered at the alien writhing on the floor and said "eat shit and die".

The man's body was then picked up, dropped off, picked up again, dropped off again. This happened until it was finally picked up, dropped off, picked up again.

This is how he was killed.

His final fate was then to be carried out in a similar way but with his final words spoken by his mother.

The alien then made his last words. "Mommy I am dying, I can't breathe."

He then collapsed to the floor, dead.

At his funeral, Duke Nukem was asked his final question by his wife.

She responded that he died because he didn't eat enough.

"He ate too much of the alien, and he couldn't keep it in his stomach."

WAD aka "Where All the Data" was designed by John Carmack specifically for the purpose of separating game assets from game code (engine)
This was a novel concept at that time. Engines obviously existed before, but nobody before him exposed the separation in the final product.

Before that if one wanted to modify existing graphics and create a mod, they'd have to slice and repackage the game along with the game code, even if it was not modified, which was legally dubious.

This separation was done explicitly for the purpose of modification, so that the game assets could've been replaced without having any need to replicate actual game code, thus allowing modding of the game without having to resort to illegal distribution of the game.

And thus Doom modding community was born.

something i thought of is: a good reason why doom mods that aren't meme mods or brutal doom could get more coverage in videogame sites is in case it inscreases interest in the creator and leads them to get somewhere in a different place
like, dragonfly making levels for prodeus or cage and hdoomguy making sprites for ion fury
i heard kegan wanted to make his own games at some point
i think a problem is that only /v/ and weirds bother to visit the likes of polygon or rockpapershotgun and some modders don't really do "portfolios" that demonstrate what they've worked on
also, not everyone either gets somewhere with this or doesn't really want to

The closest thing to that is Brutal Half Life but it's very buggy and crash prone, and hasn't had an update in over a year.
Since we're on the topic of HL1 mods, Residual Life is great. Lots of secrets, alternate routes that add replayability, excellent A+ tier map design, pic related. The combat is garbage though, it throws way too many enemies at you at the same time in the later maps and that doesn't work in Half Life, it's not Doom. So play it on Normal, or better yet, Easy (I'm not kidding, the secret level Sun Eater's Pillar literally throws 15+ vortigaunts at you at the same time, several times, and these charge up in less than a second for devastating hitscan damage). Hard will have you savescumming all of the way. The story is incomprehensible due to bad translation but that never mattered in a good FPS. I've played this one at least 8 times since I can't get enough of the map design, I think they based a lot of them off real life locations.
Residual Point is basically a proto-RL. It's okay. If you want more of the map design, it's worth a playthrough. I haven't replayed this one a lot but I think it also has alternate routes.
Hazardous-Course 2 is a great puzzle/platforming mod with tons of neat secret-hunting and, again, top tier map design. Not very replayable, but you should go through it all and 100% it at least once. Also has great humor, it made me burst out laughing a couple of times.
Echoes is pretty damn good, but it's a more traditional Half-Life campaign. It doesn't go as wacky as Residual Life with its maps, but they are still well made. It feels like a modern Blue Shift.

Yeah, and I played some mods back in the day, like Starship Troopers. There was also this one mod I can't remember the name of, it was sort of MGS inspired, you could sneak up on enemies and break their necks, and I remember being impressed by the sliding doors that were rendered as animated textures, but it only had a single level when I played it. I think the only weapon you had was a SOCOM, too.

There was also this single episode map pack with a ton of assets swiped from other build games, it had "1999" in the title. Then there was another one that had some sort of a tacticool theme and had enemies with Counter-Strike sounds. I think that's about it.

I wonder if any of those have been updated since or if they've simply disappeared from the internet altogether.

Build engine style design. Hitscanners do a ton of damage. The game starts hard and then gets easier for a bit because the "harder" enemies turn up more. It's not that I don't enjoy these, AoW is a ton of fun with 20+ players, but it feels like nothing is changing anymore. Maybe I've got rose tinted glasses on, but in the days of ZDaemon's peak popularity, and the early Skulltag days, there was a greater diversity of game modes, mods, and megawads, and also a lot more standard DM, TDM, CTF and COOP; simple stuff that didn't take a million scripts and wads to run.

Like previously mentioned by anon, it's incredibly good for getting/giving feedback. Not like people can't give it in this thread, assuming the author of whatever lurks around to see it, but IRC/Discord tends to be much faster. Normally I don't have to wait for minutes between replies, which is why I personally prefer Discord for development stuff. As for the circlejerk, it ultimately depends on the admins. If you find a server where, say, politics are properly banned regardless of wing, you're gonna have a good time. Furries are unavoidable in this community in particular, but, again, up to the admins to make the place habitable. It's not an issue with the platform. There are sane places for sure. Never been there myself, but I'd fancy a guess and say the Hideous Destructor server is okay, for a Doom server.

oh, then that's easy
there's a special that lets you lower a sector by the shortest texture on one of its sides (I forget how it picks)

you don't "dodge" hitscan, it either hits you or not and it can be literally the frame you notice an enemy in build engine games. you just try to kill the enemy before they notice you or go into hiding till you can get a good shot but if the come out of a wall close by or something, you're pretty much guaranteed to get hit. crouching helps somewhat from what I've seen but not 100%.

okay so I looked it up, and the line special finds the shortest lower texture found on any line of the sector, and lowers the floor by that amount
so you have a scrolling sector set up like the pic here, and every switch lowers each of those barricades by their shortest lower texture, which let's say is 32 units tall on all of them
so each switch lowers all the barricades by 32 units, the scrolling floor carries the voodoo doll to the right, and they cross lines raising each stair along the way (marked by those red lines)

the stairs themselves would probably just be a "raise to highest neighboring floor", with some joined sector trickery used to set the target height

>>6027756
Hitscan isn't inherently brutal in the Build engine. It's not like the Doom engine, where games using it were built upon the foundation of a finished game; Build is just the necessities to build a 2.5D game. So every game made with it had very different code. You can dodge the hitscan of Enforcers and Pig Cops in Duke Nukem.

>> No.6027794

>>6027785
yeah, it checks the height of the texture
so if you've got a square sector, it'll check the lower texture on the front side of all four lines, and if there's a back side, it'll check those four lower textures too
there's a hangup here in that "no texture" is just texture index 0, which AASTINKY/AASHITTY occupy, so any sides with a blank lower texture will use that texture's height. so because of that, you'll want to texture every lower sidedef to avoid weirdness, even if the lower texture won't ever be seen.

Wow. Some of you are too fucking cynical for your own good. Wrath is fucking EXCELLENT. This is easily better than Ion Fury or Dusk (which I also like). The visuals are fucking beautiful but still look old-school, every weapon is useful & satisfying, the levels are MASSIVE, and it's just fucking fun to play. The gameplay is classic shit, but unlike Quake you've got usable inventory items and alt-fires. Also unlike Quake the enemies are greater in number but easier to kill. I swear, if a retro-style game is TOO retro you people complain that it's uncreative, but if it's not retro ENOUGH then you complain it's poser shit.
I'm not kidding about the levels' size btw. There's only 2 levels in this early access release, but it took me like an hour just to finish one. The design was mostly linear, but was still fun to explore and progress through.

The soul tether system seems pretty unnecessary since there's more than enough per level for a reasonable amount of saves, so you might as well just have regular quicksaves. If people abuse quicksaves, that should be their choice.
>You can't rebind weapon keys and the fov doesn't go above 100 because ???.
You can rebind weapon keys, its right there in the controls menu. FOV you can increase arbitrarily with the console. But to open the console you need to bind a key to it in the cfg file.

Search around the site and you'll find plenty more than that.
If you want any of them to work though, you'll need either Satore Monster Pack

or InvasionPro. Personally I like this one better.

Ion Maiden is boring. 2/3 of the enemy roster is functionally the same, weapons aside from bowling bomb are completely uninspired, and even BBomb is unoriginal since it's from previous Bombshell title.
Levels too feel samy due to number of reasons.
It's all competently done, but it's boring.

For all its faults Dusk has SOME imagination put into it.

And I like Amid Evil the most out of all 3.

I say what we need is virtual functions for directly handling collision. We have Touch for other actors, but nothing for hitting walls or planes.

>> No.6029005

>>6028990
>I seriously don't know how
Maybe: Constantly check for velocity of the target, and keep record of the 2-3 last ticks
Make target (or holding beam) do the wall checks via short range hitscans/melee attacks/whatever other method, with range dependent on the radius of the held being.
If the hitscan connects that means it hits the wall, check the prior velocity, if was high enough do damage based on velocity.

Sure its cumbersome and inelegant, but should do the job.

>> No.6029009

>>6029005
Hm yeah I could use Linetracer. It will fail to detect when only a corner of the held actor is about to collide with something, but it would be better than nothing.

Personally I think they all stand on the same level but dont go above it. Ion Maiden, I really dislike Amid Evil aesthetics and weapons.

I just wish these retro inspired fps got some ideas on them. The again when 2d retro games started being amde, only after a while you started getting the really good ones.

It made me so angry when they tried to use Doom's shareware as an excuse for a time-limited one-level demo for Doom 4.

>> No.6029352

Well, I've been playing Wrath and I'm sad to say I couldn't be bothered to play more than one level of it.

The game looks great, but its got no personality at all. I can't put my finger on it, but something is horribly, horribly missing.

I played through all of the Arcane Dimensions mod this week, and it was as fresh as fuck. I come to this, and... It feels like it's brought absolutely nothing to table.

I really thought this was gonna be 'the one', but I honestly prefered Ion Fury 10 times over this.

Literally nothing in this post makes sense. Im admittedly a fan of the game already but I could understand if you had logical criticisms. What the fuck is "objectivity" in level design?
