There are still no explanations on the big dot levels on SMW.
Things people have suggested:
Level size, time limit, number of coins, number of power ups available

No, and people generally thought it was meant to indicate a big level with multiple sections, which applies for some of them, but not all, and likewise there are small dot levels that are also big with multiple parts.
