Try emulating first
If you enjoy it buy some carts
16 bit era is most available
Ps1 and dreamcast and saturn you can just burn CDs for
Everdrive is the thinking man's solution

Serious advice: the budget would be better spent on a therapist.

Or... you could just collect your thoughts. In to a neat little book and then you sell the book. And then with all the money you go colect therapists. Like some with hair, and some without hair. Dont forget the fat ones.

This. Fixing mental problems is always preferable to indulging in them.

PC + emulator
And dont forget to actually play the games instead of storing roms

I actually agree with the therapy troll person, mental well-being is very important.

As for collecting OP, like any expensive and time intensive hobby, you have to start with what you're passionate about.

OP, what kind of games were you playing growing up? Remember those ones you sold and regret cos you miss playing them/now they're worth something? Start there.

I personally don't use emulators because I like to delay gratification. When you finally find that game you want for an okay price, it's very satisfying taking it home and playing it, even if it turns out to be shite.

Collect what you like, emulate, if you like it and could see yourself playing it with a better experience physically then collect it. Nothing is dumber than a poser who collects old Vidya and drives the prices up for those of us who actually enjoy it

Yoyoyo WHAT is this list nigger. Explain to me how Chinese Bootleg Pokemon Yellow beats out Super Mario Bros 2, Bubble Bobble and Crystalis.

>> No.6018098

the time for collecting retro was when it wasn't retro. 360/ps3/wiiu is what you want now.

Unless you actually have some pre existing and personal investment it's not a fun hobby to COLLECT shit you never played.

>> No.6018307

Sorry everyone's a sperg, OP. Anyway I think handheld's are fun to collect for. The libraries usually have some curious titles and it's generally not too expensive. It's not retro but the DS could be cool for you to get into.

I've actually got a small GBA collection going but I've heard that some Japan-exclusive fan translated games are worth playing.

NES is my personal favorite console and also the one with the most classics, so I'm clearly not alone on that, but it's also expensive to collect for, so you're better off emulating first. SNES is another great console and it's slightly less expensive.

What type of games do you like playing?

I'll step up and give you an actual answer OP. I'd go with ps1. Other than there being a ridiculously large catalog, most is relatively cheap. A few hours ago I picked up Wipeout 3 and the local game shop for $4, the most expensive game they had was Grandia for $40, and a reasonably priced classic was Vagrant Story for $20.

>>6019716
Seconding this. PS1 is a really good option if you want complete games at a reasonable price, especially if you don't mind cheap importing Japanese copies.
