Tried it for a couple hours when I rented Collection of Mana; thought it was pretty bad. Which was weird because I thought Final Fantasy Adventure would be the garbage one but I wound up really loving it. Really wanted to play it before playing Trials but just couldn't bring myself to get very far.

>> No.6015245

I dropped it immediately as soon as I realized I had to bullshit my way through it's combat with it's accuracy system. Defeats the purpose of being an action RPG. Cool music though.

I know this will make some folks here flip their lids but I unironically think the remake is better. I think a hint of cel shading would have made it shine but it looks nice and the gameplay is cleaned up. I really like how closely they stuck to the original look, down to the way all the rocks are formed. I certainly thought it was a better remake than Sword of Mana on GBA that's for sure. Also that said I always wanted to like Secret of Mana more than I did and I still don't love the new one, but it's a step up.

But I really enjoy watching how series evolve. Just going from FFA to SoM gave me a kick because I got to see what the heck the shopkeeper was supposed to be. I'll keep going unless if the game is actually really really long.

>> No.6015408

The game is absolutely magical up to Pandoras ruins, then it stays good and magical again until you beat the Mushroom area (Topango?) and then it stays relatively good but not great and the last three dungeons or main areas and bosses are kind of blended together and it crashes hard. I didnt realize the game was actually gutted to fit on the SNES cartridges and it explains a lot of how the story seems to fall apart like it was left out.

>> No.6015412

>>6015173
It's best enjoyed as coop'ing with your bro over an extended period of time. I feel the game is best in the beginning before magic, and feels more like an action game then. Once you get magic, you're just scanning the boss, seeing what he is weak against, and spamming that while physical attacking the boss becomes less useful. Plus there is a lot of grinding.

Oooff you have picked a tough row to hoe if you plan to stick with it. If you don't love SoM, SD3 probably won't blow your socks off. I love Secret of Mana. I've been doing a playthrough about every two years since the turn of the century.
I find it's quite easy to grind your magic so that all elementals are at all times levelled up to your mana seed count.
then around level 5-6 (shade & lumina) you can simply stop grinding magic since you're at the point of diminishing returns. of course I usually prefer Luna to be level 8 for both the sprite and girl, for drain magic and the crit%+ magic respectively.
i always forget which is which, but either Lunar Boost or Moon Energy will allow you to make casual critical hits on the Mana Beast without charging up.

The game is overrated. It defintely captures that late 80s charm better than some other games, but it's just too light hearted for its very serious plot. 4chan is a nihilistic hellhole. People talk to each other and/or post images. That's about it. It differs from other forums in that it strongly promotes (though sadly does not require) anonymity and tends to discard content after a while by default rather than making it permanent. Also, it differs in that it is relatively explicitly nihilistic, whereas someplace like say Reddit will at least pretend to be upright and civilized (while ultimately being arguably centered around an aimless worship of oblivion all the same). It is famous for being crazy and evil and super creative but it's mostly just another forum. Some boards, such as /tg/, /d/ (believe it or not), and I dunno maybe /an/ or something, are kind of nice and partly free of nihilism. Some, like /lit/ or /pol/, wholeheartedly embrace the pointless pursuit of petty evils. Most, including /vr/ here, are somewhere in between. Good luck.

Whatever weapon you can get to a high forging level is OP, if you're willing to build up to and actually use the tedious super-strong charging attacks. Whatever damaging or healing spell you practice a lot is OP. You don't really get a lot of significant choices here.

All the weapons can have great stats at the end. The best one is whatever one makes it easiest for you to actually hit enemies without getting hit yourself. For me that's the whip or the javelin. But they're all kinda the same really.

With respect to defense, I think the very best stuff is generally dropped by late-game enemies? But you probably don't need it, and it isn't likely to make a huge difference even if you get it.

I honestly recommend the SoM remake over the original. It's basically a 1 to 1 port with updated graphics and polished gameplay. Graphically SoM had some charm but doesn't look amazing and the remake is pretty faithful to it. Gameplay is the main reason though since the original is quite janky. Overall it's a better experience so if you're not playing for the nostalgia of revisiting the game it's what I'd recommend.

It always felt to me like the final fortress would be this badass place but really the sunken fortress/palace was way better. In the final area you are just dodging those high powered enemies that fuck you up and the final boss battle music is so awful but the fight is OK I guess. Then you get the Flammie fight where you have to wait for him to come to the screen and give him a smack? Nothing too exiting about this fight and it was kind of lame. Would have been better if he flies around the screen then lands and shoots fire at you or something and you have to stab him in the head with the mana sword.

It's a pretty average game which promises to be much grander than it really is(I suppose it was planned to at one point).
Gameplay is pretty braindead and leveling is very grindy. Collision detection is bad.
There's tons and tons of slowdown in it. Music is cut out by sound-effects half the time which is really annoying.
Soundtrack is ok but not amazing.

Still better than Seiken Densetsu 3...what a mess that game is.
Secret of Evermore > Mana/SD2 > SD3

Also Soul Blazer and Terranigma are better than all 3.

It had great grinding in the middle.

Music is hit or miss. Ice Forest is my favorite.

Great art, cover, title screen is iconic, characters possess a special place in RPGs and feel balanced.

The game is enjoyable in its own right, and simply because of its art direction in a class of its own.

Menu system is neat. Battle system takes some getting used to, feels good once you get the hang of it.

I would agree with other anons, it chokes towards the end. I'm not very fond of the beginning either.

If you google Secret of Mana Ancient Cave you can play the randomizer that Moppu made and a lot of the people in the Discord channel make their own hacks and share features with each other.

It really isn't.
The gameplay is obnoxious in SD3, they might have as well made it into a turn-based game with how you're not allowed to run during battle and it basically makes the combat into a complete die roll.

SD3 was somehow even more rushed than SD2/SoM was.
Duran's shields don't even work, how can people even defend that?

Secret of Evermore was the best one and it wasn't even an SD game. And even that game had problems but not as much as SoM or SD3.

Its a real good game.
A blocking mechanic would have made it better by rewarding you getting better, as opposed to just having evade being a stat. (there is a rom hack that sort of has this, its wonky though.)

>> No.6031582

I got the Mana Collection for the Switch, and so far I like Final Fantasy Adventures better aside from graphics. Both combat and story is stronger in the GB game.
The combat in SoM feels weird and kinda bad. I'm definitely not a fan of normal attacks being completely useless in an action RPG. I like that they tried to do something about charge attacks being more useful than it was in FFA, but they definitely went overboard. Also hate the knockdown system. It feels like I miss 80% of my attacks because one of my teammates always knocks the enemies down miliseconds before, and then I have to spend seconds camping them and hoping I can hit them first. If I set the teammates passive, then I get fucked quickly when there are multiple enemies so I found no good solution. In any case, combat is bad.

>> No.6031615

>>6031582
You just hit them then run back and then when it's 100% again you hit them again.
Let it cool down for 1-2 seconds before hitting the enemy after the 100% though because sometimes if you hurry it it will registers it as 99% and will do shit damage.

Make sure to level your weapons too.
Gaia's Navel is a good place to level your weapons by grinding off of Greendrops which multiply and are easy to kill.

>> No.6031627

Yeah I agree with all your criticism. The combat works well enough to be fun in a basic way, but the percentage system is badly tuned, the system of buffering/absorbing/ignoring incoming damage when it comes from multiple sources is confusing and probably broken, and the charge attacks are way too slow to prepare and too samey and hard to control. Like they're all just different ways to hit X times as hard or whatever, instead of say one having the ability to disable an enemy's magic while another is strong against bugs while another is super fast while another is hard to aim but super strong.
