Does anyone else remember N64 games that detected the color of your attached controller? I vividly remember at least one game where this was a feature and I thought it was common knowledge, but I'm having a hell of a time finding it documented anywhere. It seems there's just no information anywhere about it. I only vaguely remember that it was a hockey game that I actually saw it work with my own eyes, but I'm sure I saw it.

I don't think that has ever been the case, you might be misremebering how many games and manuals would use the various colors for representing the controller such as Banjo-Tooie, DK64, and so on. I do know that Nintendo Switch actually does detect the colors of your controller (even the button colors) but outside the system menus only Pokemon Sword/Shield and Labo actually reflect this in-game.

Found this ancient website where this guy mentions it too. I think it was just such an obscure fact that few people knew it existed

>In the early N64 days, it was rumored that several 4-player games would take advantage of the multiple colored controllers by including a feature that would recognize a player’s controller color and represent this in the game. For example, somebody playing with a red controller would have his character in the game highlighted in red. This feature, first rumored to be in Midway’s Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey, never truly materialized.

>>6012903
Seems reasonable considering the Switch can tell which Joycon you're using. Not sure if something like that is actually coded into the controllers though. Would be interested in seeing if there's any truth to it.

If the controller actually has some form of identifier for which colour the controller is, then sure, that'd work.

But they don't.

Seems reasonable they'd do that 25 years ago? No. It doesn't. At all. I mean hell if they were going to do that why not just have the NES suck your dick and have built in Twitch functionality?

Some of the most basic features today weren't even dreamed up a quarter century ago.

This isn't sophisticated technology, it would be a simple byte or less indicating the controller's color. There was already parallel data going on to activate the rumble pak or memory pak, it would not have been remotely difficult for one of those micro controllers to have had a color designation on board, and clearly the idea was there as it was rumored to at least be a planned feature at some point

OP I know what game you're talking about.
In Aerogauge there's an N64 controller racer you can unlock, and the color of controller you use determines the color of the ship. The feature is broken in emulators though, which is why you always see it as its default grey on youtube. There's little to no documentation on this neat feature anywhere, probably due to how few people actually liked Aerogauge.

I'll give it a try in a few hours and report back with my findings. The game seems to have an easy unlock all cheat. I'm assuming it'll work on Everdrive, no reason it wouldn't.

>> No.6015024

>>6013986
if this isn't just bullshit it doesn't work in emulators because no one has documented the command that tells the controller the return what color it is. If it's legit and there's a reasonable way to unlock it it would be easy enough to find te needed info. It might not even need to be unlocked. The game might just read the color at the beginning. Gonna wait for this to before confirmed legit before wasting any time on it though.

Hmm... Well, gave it a try. I have a solid blue controller, an atomic people, a grey, and a Tribute. Figured I'd try this with each of the different controllers inserted (except grey). This didn't change the default color. However, there are quite a few alternate colors you can select for the vehicle: red, green, blue, dark gray, and yellow. This is simply selected by pressing the R button before selecting the vehicle and it's standard in the game to have alternate colors like this.
I'm not totally 100% sure but I think we could call this one debunked. You'd think it would recognize my solid blue one if such a feature existed.

You probably just haven't activated the color code on the controller. To do this you have to enter the konami code 9001 times with a transfer pak inserted with a crystal cart that has a shuckle holding a rare candy obtained from a berry as the first pokemon in your party.
