You should play a Breath of Fire game.

>> No.6012726

I played most of BoF2 and it was one of the most agonizingly average experiences of my life. The way the characters were always transforming was cool, but it was such a non-game. I felt like I was just floating from one combat to the next with no real import in any facet. The story wasn't gripping (didn't help that the translation was awful), and the combat didn't have any fun options.

BoF4 seems legitimately cool, but it's one of those games I haven't ever been able to get past the first 10 minutes for some reason.

>> No.6012739

You should play BoF 1 & 2 one of the best games ever. Nothing comes close to the cozyness even zelda link to the past is bearly comparable if any.

I would appreciate a BoF2 remake with more township customization options.
And a running button as well.

BoF 4 is slow to start but the build is so worth it. It's the only one of those games I liked much but it's quite good if you don't mind a slow pace.

Same about 2. I remember feeling like I had put SO much time into it and still hadn't got to the end so I eventually just stopped playing.

I tried BoF1, and it was okay. Didn't finish it, nothing really stood out to me in it.

I and II are painfully mediocre RPGs. III and IV, however, are fucking excellent. Slowburners, but excellent.

The most amazing thing about II is even with all its bells & whistles it is still painfully mediocre.

I tried playing 3/4 but found them kind of "eh". The speed of combat also played a big role in this as it felt like everything took a eternity and a half to get stuff done. Game oozes personality though.

This is why you emulate JRPGs. After a while of soaking in the battle music you just want to breeze through random encounters.

>> No.6013861

>>6012726
Calling it average is giving it way too much credit. It's an outright bad game. The translation is abominable and the encounter rate is so high that you get random battles every couple of steps when you're in a dungeon. The graphics are nice, and I'm sure it'd be a lot better with a re-translation patch but the encounter bullshit ruins any enjoyment you might have with the game.

I find 1 to be delightfully quaint if a bit simple. But It's simplicity is were it also shines, I think. You always have a good sense of were you are and what's happening and what's at stake. It's all forward moment. Keep moving on, finding keys, searching for your sister and meeting new people. It moves between set piece to piece. And the Dark Dragons war of conquest is everyone's problem so there's motivation to go around, if a bit under developed.

2 tends to waffle a bit more. A lot more. The main over arching story doesn't show up till much later in the game and you're basically left with vague errands. There's a neat hook at the start but they sit on that for a while. There's KIND of better character development but only slightly and it's really just the cast taking turns being briefly important. I feel like there's also trouble with context. It doesn't have that flow 1 did so the only reason you're moving forward is because it's the way to go and compared to 1 if you stop to look back there's not really a lot to show for your results. You just keep moving till you run into an obstacle that can only be passed by a certain characters ability you're only gonna use twice and then you remember you haven't been leveling up that fucking monkey and highfort can go to hell.

3 and 4 are widely considered the best, and the stories, though they contain common elements, are not connected (though I believe 1 and 2 are, but even then not so much that 2 won't make sense if you start there - I did.), so you can start pretty much wherever.

Personally I think Dragon Quarter is the best BoF, but that's not retro so I'll leave it at that.

>> No.6016165

>>6016036
Strange choice, i understand you can appreciate that feeling about not using the dragon form but serisouly the characters were bad especially that blond antagonist with shit haircut who was trully unbearable.

My personnal favorite favorite remains the 3rd because it is comfy and gene system was so cool, It's the only BoF were you are really feeling the fact you are incarnating a real dragon full of his glory.

Been playing 1 as my first in the series and it’s ehhhh

Not bad but it all feels like going through motions. Seeing angel people and wolf dudes is neat, the scenarios so far are okay and kinda fun in their classic simplicity. I like how the game kinda throws stuff at you without too much exposition.

But the battles are just so bleh, they feel like a bunch of monotonous nothing. There’s not much strategy and almost nothing in the way of customization.

Just got the wolf archer and I’m thinking of dropping the game.

Different poster, but I mean, blonde dude was supposed to be insufferable. That's what makes it feel so good when you keep dunking on him.
