what's a good but cheap
N64 controller converter for PC?
I want
>no noticeable input lag
>joystick input to feel the same as it does on a real n64, or close enough
>Xinput or at the very least something retroarch can understand
retroarch UI sucks but it beats tweaking mupen with console commands and config files or using projectmalware64

Just buy one from raphnet, you won't regret it. It even works with the memory pak and rumble pak.

>memory pak
so like, mario kart times racked up on a real console can be transferred to an emulator, and vica versa?
which emulators support it?
is there a chance of data corruption or bricking the memory pak? whats your experience w/ it? not that it matters that much

An adapter isn't going to change the way the controller feels

it will if it adds input lag

Underage, get out

The Raphnet one is the only real solution but is very very fiddly on RetroArch - depending on your chosen input driver, it either spams you with 'device connected' warnings during play (one every single millisecond) which you simply can't disable on a per-device basis, or else it will just force close RA entirely unless you physically plug it in after the game has started up.
Many other devices have these exact issues with RA though, acknowledged by the devs but they're busy with other things.
It does work amazingly well on Project64 though, it even has a raw input driver for it.

PJ64 hasn't had that stuff in it for ages

Obviously.

No it won't The controller will feel exactly the same way regardless of whether it's plugged into an adapter that has lag or no lag, or no adapter at all.

just what the fuck is a pak anyways

OP is trying to make sure that the drivers for whatever adapter he gets will recognize and interpret the full range of motion of the analog stick in the way an N64 would, not have an overly large deadzone, etc.

I think Nintendo of America came up with that.
In Japan they're called Cassettes.
Not sure how they call the "Controller pak" in Japan though.

The naming convention for cartridges that Nintendo started with NES - they called NES carts Game Paks and the convention stuck all the way to the N64 and GBA. This was probably due to branding reasons (although I've read that some people say it's because they wanted to distance themselves from prior gen consoles due to video game crash that happened in the North America, but then again I'm eurofag and born after that), granted nobody I knew called them that.

Just use Mupen with a gui

They made that up because they wanted to be seen as different from atari, coleco, sega, etc.

Back in 1997 me and my friends called it a memory card.
