It was the first really solid North American contender against Sega and Nintendo. The games were relatively cheaper due to the CD basis.
The SNES fans were entering young adulthood and wanted to move away from Mario stuff. PSX games had more content that wasn't really conveyed in Nintendo games (sex, violence etc). It was lightning in a bottle.

>contender against Sega and Nintendo
If by "contender" you mean absolutely curbstomped them right out of the gate and throughout perpetuity.

Playstation literally stole every single third party developer both coming and going by making it easy to develop for AND to publish on, leaving Nintendo and Sega limping along with basically only first and second party titles, some minimal shovelware and a sparse few additional gems to be found.

But OP's tone doesn't sound like he's asking about why the console was so successful it sounds like he's literally asking "does this thing even have any games?" which is so ludicrous the only explanation is >>6009410

I still remember the very first time I played Playstation at a friend's house when I was still under the impression that I had outgrown video games following Sega's disappointing 32x and Sega CD offerings and the increasingly lackluster and expensive 3DO and CDi.

He had Destruction Derby which I acknowledged as being technically impressive but pretty boring but then we switched over to Twisted Metal and I had a fucking blast. That feeling of hope that video gaming was moving into a new age was very memorable.

oh yeah, and the amount of times my brat sister overwrote my career file on DC was unforgivable. I did it once too, ended up having to take my memory card out before playing if I was drunk/high + never gave my sis the memory card again
the DC version of 2 doesn't load your last played game when you boot it up, so it is unbelievably easy to overwrite your entire career save file with a single session high score. you might not think it'd happen because you're careful but when it happens you will feel the rage - i know.
if i sat you down with my fully configured version of th2 on PC at 60fps with a non-retarded keyboard layout and DS4 controller configured correctly, you'd never play the DC port ever again.

oh yeah that being said the 1st game doesn't lag half as much on DC and is sane about save files like every other Thawk game, so it gets a pass in my books
the DC version of TH1 is basically the closest to a PC port we'll get, it has a great framerate, doesn't break in widescreen under emulation (unlike PS1), the render distance is great, and the assets are all just high-quality versions of the PS1 textures/models.
DC TH2 models are abominations, and some skaters still have the PS1 models so its obvious these were remade when treyarch ported it, perhaps they had too much time on their hands or something so said "lol what if we made a claymation version of tony hawk and a few other characters but not all of them"

autistic rant over, lol

If this thread is up tommorow (got work today) I'll make a webm to show you how good it plays on my system after patching it, and I'll give links + settings
I can personally say from experience Thawk games on PC have the least input delay, stable graphics rendering, and negligible glitchyness in collision detection, if not better than the PS1 port thanks to non-integer math.
I think most people write off PC ports as not being able to be superior because of compatability issues, memories playing on below-requirement PC's, and not taking the time to configure / QoL patch the games.
I stand with my answer as the PC version being better, but if you cannot be bothered putting in the work to get the best version of the game you can, DC on original hardware or PS1 under overclocked emulation (ePSXe, BeetleHW) are your best options.
The effort to get a DC for two games or have to tweak an emulator however are about on par with the amount of effort required to get TH2 working at its best on a modern PC or even win10 though.

Any PS1 Wipeout game

Now find me a better sim-cade from the console era than Gran Turismo, a better pure arcade racer series than Ridge Racer, find a better rally game than Colin McRae's Rally 2, a better snowmobile racer than Sled Storm, a better sci-fi non AG racer than Rollcage, better combat racing than Twisted Metal/Demolition Derby, better open world racing than Driver, etc.

It's a product of its time that didn't age well, but at the time things like redbook audio, full motion video and games that featured a lot of blood and guts like Resident Evil were big system sellers for teenagers. Nintendo 64 had better games that have aged better, but at the time it was viewed as being for children and there's nothing teenagers hate more than being thought of as children.

There's a lot of shit on there that doesn't need to be on there and a lot of good stuff missing.

It has MK4, arguably the worst Mortal Kombat ever but there's no MK Trilogy? What a shitty fucking list. Don't include shitty games just to make the list longer, especially if you are too casual to put actual hidden gems on the list.

A list for any system should always priorities exclusives and only feature multplats if that particular systems happens to have the best version of the multiplat.

0/10 list, total fail, kill yourself for reposting that crap and commit sudoku if it's actually your OC

I just hated the blurry look that the N64 put out, I also disliked the lack of 2D JRPGs, the no cutscenes also sucked, I don't like 3D platformers and there was generally not much variety in terms of games on the N64.

It's less about image and more about the fact that N64 was actually geared towards kids (or adults that like childish games). If that's exactly what you like, sure it's the best console ever. For everybody else, not so much.

Also, fuck off with your aged shit. There's a few PSX games that are still playable as if they were released this year, the same can't be said for N64.

>Tales of Eternia instead of Tales of Destiny
>Action Adventure, no straight Action games, Einhander in "other"
>only Tomb Raider 3
>two Vigilante 8 games, only Twisted Metal 2
>No Ghost in the Shell
>No Colony Wars
>No Loaded
>Racing section is a joke, no Ridge Racer or Wipeout

>Mortal Kombat 4 but no Trilogy
>Dead or Alive, Bloody Roar, Mortal Kombat and no Darkstalkers or King of Fighters at all
>No Ace Combat
>No Tempest
>No Puzzle Fighter
>No Vib Ribbon
>No Darius

So what happens to a work that didn't age well in your mind if not that?
My point is that if something is made with a tasteful artistic vision in mind and uses the techniques available at that time to enrich that vision and not just to shout "look you couldn't do this before!", then it can't age, because what it was set to do is timeless
Games, just like movies, that are made just to say "look what I can do now!" are not art but products, and like washing machines and computers become old and obsolete

I feel like I can repeat myself countless times and you will still not get it
If something is made just to show off the technology of that time then yes, it ages badly (and pretty rapidly if made in recent years, which is the biggest problem of modern gaming)
But a good work of art doesn't age because it's not bound by the techniques used to make it, they're just the tools used to bring to life that particular vision, and that vision is timeless
Again it would be stupid to say "Mario 64 isn't as good now because low-poly 3d models" because that wasn't the point of the game, the point of the game was "movement in a 3d environment" and it's still the best 3d platformer of all time because to master the controls of the game will always be a fun experience, no matter what future technological achievement will succeed it

>> No.6013605

>Again it would be stupid to say "Mario 64 isn't as good now because low-poly 3d models"
the plow poly models didn't age well. the game is also very good. these two statements aren't in opposition. they're not mutually exclusive.
